President’s Message
I would like to welcome everyone to this year’s CSCL Annual General Meeting, hosted by the Norland Guild.
Norland is always a great host for any event and I am supremely confident everyone will have a great time this weekend!
This is also a chance to spend some time reconnecting with our friends from different locations around the province, and to showcase our leather work projects. This year also comes with some serious business that needs to be addressed, specifically revising and updating our constitution. This organization has been around since the
50’s and as the times have changed I am afraid so must we, after all progress is inevitable. Change is always a challenge, but I feel that this change is important to the future of this organization.
Something that also goes along with any organization that has been around as long as the CSCL has, is loss, in the last 2 years since I became president, tragically we have lost a few members, their passion for leather work and this organization has helped to make it what it is today. Rather than mourn their loss, let us instead celebrate their memory and work together to promote our craft to others and become better leather workers ourselves.
So in closing I would like to encourage everyone to make the most of this year’s annual, have some fun, spend time with cherished friends and learn something new.
Yours sincerely, Robert Regan, ACSCL President

President’s Message
Welcome to The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft’s 65th Annual General Meeting, hosted by
Mississauga. I hope everyone has a good time, meets new people and learns much.
I am hoping that we can get some workshops going this coming year and I am sure that Lauch and myself would appreciate any suggestions or help you may want to give.
This coming year we are planning on having more workshops so get your suggestions in and let us know what you would like to learn or have a refresher on.
A professor at a large school always told his classes that if we always did what we have always done, we will get what we always had. So let’s try and do something different and see what the results will be in our clubs.
Once again welcome and may the tools work with you.
Yours sincerely, Rob Regan, Associate CSCL, President

“Canadian Leathercraft” Newsletter: by Madeleine Mitchell, Editor
The “Canadian Leathercrafter”, the quarterly Newsletter of CSCL, features our Guild’s news and events, how-to projects, and even some tips and ideas from CSCL’s past. Most issues have articles either from one of our
Branches, or our Members-at-Large. As always, these contributions are welcomed.
The Spring 2014 issue highlighted the Annual in Stoney Creek, ON hosted by the Hamilton Branch. This issue listed the recipients of the many Awards and Ribbons. The 2014 Weston Trophy was not presented this year. Honourary
Life Memberships were presented to Peter Grove FCSCL and Davis McPherson FCSCL. Carol McLean FCSCL was also showcased as she received the The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award.
Lauren McPherson, Member-at-Large presented another report of her travels seeking crafting resources popular with CSCL members. In the Summer 2014 issue, Lauren visited Port Loring and Sudbury.
With thanks to the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal we learned that “It’s All About Health: Can Toxic Adhesive
Fumes be Avoided? By Dr. Rainer M. Buchholz, Renia Adhesives, Cologne, Germany. Several images of CSCL prize winning articles from the 2014 Annual completed the issue.
The Autumn edition featured an article about the day long Workshop making “Leather Cylinders” held in October, in Hamilton. The helpful printed instructions are from Al Stohlman’s The Art of Case Making Volume # 1.
Paul Kitchener and Kim Winchester of Mississauga Branch have been instrumental in reorganizing and scanning the “Larmour Library”. We learned of the variety available in the lending library and how to access books, videos and other resources. A holiday decoration was the project that completed the last issue of 2014.
The Winter edition reported on a visit by CSCL’s Norwegian friend, Alf B. Luneborg who visited with members at
Tundra Leather and then toured the Bata Museum in Toronto with Paul Kitchener and Eugene Pik.
Because of Alf’s visit, your Editor got to meet well known Sculptor, Rex Lingwood who works in leather as well as other media.
A Box Making project was presented by the Norland Branch to challenge members’ imagination.

Workshop Report - Lauch Harrison, Rob Regan
The Norland Branch was again the most active Chapter hosting two of the three workshops this year. The Purse in the summer done by Lauch and the Dragon this past Spring done by Jim Wilkes. The fall had us doing a dice cup with basket stamping and stitching, at Lester’s place in Burlington. We should see the results of workshops on the
Branch tables, the workshops were well attended and the results were very favourable for all workshops.
This Annual will be promoting more workshops; I trust it will lead to an exciting program of projects that will inspire old and new members alike. We want to get your ideas. Please step up and offer some support.
Thanks Lauch.

Branch Reports
Hamilton Branch - Respectfully submitted by Lauch Harrison, Vice President
For the past year, the Hamilton Leather Guild has been holding monthly meetings on the second Wednesday (evening) of each month. We do hands-on workshops and demonstrations by various members on various leathercraft topics. Initially our meetings were split between Tundra leather and Lester Pinter's house.
We then shifted our meetings to the home of Colin and Tammy Pardon; the Pardon’s have been members for some years now and have opened up the basement workroom that is a super work area. Our recent meeting have been on skiving techniques, hand stitching, and doing several projects: the lead weighted shot bag, dye bottle holder, and coin purse

MAL Report - Respectfully submitted Lauren McPherson, MAL Representative
For the 2014-15 year our roster of 14 represents Burlington, Calgary, London, Princeton, Simcoe, Woodstock and
2012 Guest Speaker Peter Main, U.S.A.
The Summer issue of CANADIAN LEATHERCRAFT saw the continued MAL featured writing, A Canadian Site To
Visit, for a fourth consecutive year.
On Saturday, September 20, 2014, at the Fall Thorndale Fair, I shared a booth and demonstrated leather with multi-talented Junior MAL (Joanna) who demonstrated pencil sketching. David McPherson, FCSCL, Life Member,
MAL (1980) provided his display shelves which we lined with his full inventory of handcrafted leather boxes for sale. Marion Kehoe, Life Member, MAL, CSCL (1952) gave us the opportunity to showcase leather where she had demonstrated Leather, Coil Pots, Sock Monkeys, and, also, Potato Jewellery in the Thorndale Fair Community
Building for more than 30 years.
A Spring memo was sent to all MAL regarding donation to the 65th Annual Convention, Special Draw Table. This year MALs will donate a $75 vegetable tanned cowhide from TUNDRA LEATHER, Hamilton. We are sure to represent well with this 50% dollar amount increase above past years. MALs responded and are eager to support
CSCL although they don’t belong to any local branch.
Also, a few London leather artists have been busy at their craft this year with the sale of jewellery (Marion), a goat sculpture (Jan), a custom ordered leather box (David) to a Montreal arts broker, and CSCL writing (Dorothy).
MALs are happy when they are able to attend CSCL workshops throughout the year. Some MALs are among
CSCL’s official judges and serve as members of the Executive Council. We appreciate and value all of the CSCL website up-keep as it is our easy visit to CSCL news. Re-visiting past emails from Executive Members, especially about the Biennial (Leather 2013-Creative Versatility), is now a great time to update bio’s for advance preparation of future requirements. Remember, whenever you win a ribbon or award be sure to jot down the particulars:
Date, Location, Item, Type of Ribbon or Name of Award.
We look forward to CSCL’s continuing longevity and success.
Jim Wilkes moved the Reports be accepted as presented. Seconded by Karen Webber. Carried

Annual Dues Increase – Discussion on the Annual Dues was held. An analysis was done as to the cost per person to maintain The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft. Website. Seconded by Rob Regan. Carried.
Eugene will contact Kristi Cino for information regarding the current Web Page.

The Spring 2015 issue highlighted the Annual in Burlington, ON hosted by the Mississauga Guild. This issue listed the recipients of the many Awards and Ribbons and celebrated CSCL’s new Fellow – Karen Weber, and the new
Associate, Eugene Pik. The 2015 Weston Trophy was presented to Mississauga. We remembered our dear Member
Peter Grove FCSCL, who passed away in May 2015.
In the Summer 2015 issue, Lauren Malec reviewed several of the excellent resources available from the CSCL
Lending Library. Members-at-Large are members who do not belong to a Branch but continue to contribute to
CSCL and participate in many events.
The Autumn 2015 edition featured an article about Joyce Scruton, who helped form the Mississauga Guild and passed away in October 2015. Thanks to the Norland Branch who contributed technical articles. Pictures from the
November Workshop where member had fun making “Lasted Boxes”.
The Winter 2015-16 edition contained detailed articles by Bob Pfister on “Making an Embossed Belt Buckle” and a comprehensive article about “Bench Tools and Splitters” by Lauch Harrison. Also mentioned, the Constitiution review that is underway, as CSCL appoaches its 66th Annual Weekend, being hosted by the Norland Branch.
My wishes for CSCL’s continued growth and success,

Council of Fellows Report- Sean Dalgetty
Page 12
Council of Fellows met at Paul Kitchener’s residence on May 1, 2016, to judge the Associate and Fellow entries.
We also discuss the upcoming Biennial, Membership, Judging, and General Status of the Society, to determine if there was more that we could do to advance the Society overall.
Several suggestions were put forward to attempt to increase membership or interest in membership from the people attending our classes. It was thought that perhaps more classes should be offered by the Society. We look forward to attempting this for next year, and to try to collaborate with the Executive to make this happen.
Sincerely, Sean Dalgetty, FCSCL
Workshop Report - Lauch Harrison
The Previous Annual gave rise to List of Workshops. The Workshop Committee has been using the list with very good success and attendance. The Fall workshop on Lasted Boxes was well attended and created a profit to go to the Society. Paul Kitichener not only made the space available he also donated some of the leather used in the projects. Lauch and Sean were there to offer advice and help. The next Workshop was On Machine Sewing – part
1 - the class was well attended and everyone in attendance got to use various sewing machines at Paul's Focus'd on Food Warehouse. Sean and Paul explained the mechanics, the project was a small zippered coin purse. Due to limited time Sewing Part 2 will be held during the next couple of months. The interest in Eugene's pewter castings gave rise to a Pewter Casting – part 1 Workshop held in April, attended by 7 people, on mould making and silicone casting. The use of oven hardening resins to make the originals and then encase them using a two part flexible silicone polymer will be explored further when part 2 of the workshop takes place in the near future.

Web Administrator Report: by Kristi Cino, Web Administrator, CSCL
Hello everyone,
As of May 2, 2016, the hit counter on our website reflects 93,652, which means that 32,874 people visited our website last year (these stats are since April, 2015).
As of May 2, 2016, our Facebook page reflects 232 “Likes,” which means that 97 people “Liked” our page last year (these stats are since April, 2015).
Website is steady. There had been some concerns raised about updating the website, but I’ve done what is within my abilities and it is up and working, as we’ve gotten emails from people visiting the website. Should we have further concerns that I am unable to address, perhaps we should look at hiring an outside company who is more familiar with making the website more mobile friendly, etc.
Things required, moving forward:
- Pictures from the 2015 Annual
- More information about library processes, instructions, sign out procedures, who can borrow, etc.
- Any pictures/updates from guilds, which can be added to the website
- Pictures of people’s work that they’re willing to share on Facebook (the more pictures, the more traffic)
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely, Kristi Grove, Web Administrator, CSCL

September: We worked on making sandals with Paul Kitchener helping in making patterns and suggestions on different types of patterns.
October: Joyce Scruton showed how to cover bottles with scraps of leather and made suggestions on how to paint them after. Sorry to say this was Joyce's last demonstration as she passed away on October 17, 2016. This was a really good demonstration as Joyce was wound up and really enjoying doing what she liked best passing on information of her knowledge of leather and her tricks of the trade.
November: Bob Pfister showed us how to make a Texas billfold and we had a minutes silence for Joyce and reminisced some of the stories and things that she did for the leather guild.
December: The group met at the Pump House for Christmas and then we all went back to Paul's office for coffee and dessert.
January: Karen Weber showed us how to make a braid bracelet with clasp and it was a hands on workshop.
February: Jim Wilkes did a workshop on making leather feathers and with Paul's help showing photo's of different types of feathers and where they can be used as decorations on projects plus can be used as ear rings.
March: Eugene Pik and Paul Kitchener explained how to make patterns out of modelling clay to form for the silicon moulds.
April: Reviewed projects that we can put in for the Weston Trophy and other projects that people are working on for the Annual in May.

Continuing the MAL tradition to contribute to the Summer Issue of CANADIAN LEATHERCRAFT, this 2015-16 newsletter volume ran our inaugural article CSCL Library Review.
Returning for the second year at the Thorndale Fall Fair, Lauren Malec (MAL) demonstrated leathercraft and set up a sales booth with the help of Jan Malec on Saturday, September 26, 2015. How To Leather Maché and Making
Barbed Leather Jewellery instructions were given, complemented by finished leathercraft examples by Dorothy
McPherson, MAL (1990). Participation in this daylong event also meant competing for attention with this fair building’s attractions: a special pig breed and a wandering turtle to name a few. Photos for viewing are on the
MAL Display Table. David McPherson, FCSCL, Life Member, MAL (1980) provided his display shelves which were lined with his inventory of handcrafted leather earrings, scarf bows and holly pins for sale. Marion Kehoe, Life
Member, MAL (1952) who had demonstrated Leather, Coil Pots, Sock Monkeys, and, also, Potato Jewellery in the
Thorndale Fair Community Building for more than 30 years also had sales.
MALs are happy when they are able to attend CSCL workshops throughout the year. Some MALs are among
CSCL’s official judges and serve as members of the Executive Council. We appreciate and value all of the CSCL website up-keep as it is our easy visit to CSCL news. Remember, whenever you win a ribbon or award be sure to jot down the particulars: Date, Location, Item, Type of Ribbon or Name of Award. Now is a great time to update bio’s for advance preparation of future requirements
We look forward to CSCL’s continuing longevity and success.
