2 Notes from the Editor…
November winds are blowing and it’s time to shuffle indoors and tackle some leather crafting projects. September finds the Branches resuming meeting and demonstrations.
October 25th CSCL held a day long Workshop making “Leather Cylinders” in Hamilton.
Read about the skills learned and the helpful printed instructions from Al Stohlman’s The Art of Case Making Volume # 1.
Paul Kitchener of Mississauga Branch has been instrumental in reorganizing and storing the “Larmour Library”. Kim Winchester, also of Mississauga, has spent countless hours scanning the entire Library. CSCL is truly indebted to Kim and Paul. Some of the library’s acquisitions are rare, out of print, or one of a kind. See page 5 for how you can access books, DVD’s, and other resource materials that will help members become creative leather crafters.
This November 11th was particularly poignant because of the events in Ottawa three weeks before. Our thoughts and prayers go out all the CSCL members and their families that have loved ones that paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Season’s Greetings to our CSCL members and friends!

Branch meetings are held in Hamilton, Mississauga, and Norland, Ontario. Guests are always welcome at meetings with opportunities for newcomers to meet members and pick up some of the valuable leather crafting tips. CSCL also has a website and a Facebook page that can help with resources and finding people with the answers.

The quarterly Newsletter “Canadian Leathercraft” is your source of information about CSCL and its members. Also, check out the CSCL website at www.canadianleathercraft.org and CSCL’s Facebook page.
As always, if you have questions, comments, or even a future article for this newsletter, contact your Editor, Madeleine Mitchell at [email protected]

Variations on a Cylinder Workshop
Eight CSCL members met at the home of Lester Pinter, a Hamilton Branch member and spent Saturday, October 25th working together making variations on a Leather Cylinder. Lauch Harrison ACSCL and Rob Regan ACSCL led the eager group through the design and construction of their own cylinders or cups.
Morning practice time was spent Basket Weave stamping, mitre cutting, using French Edgers and learning to skive. During the afternoon the stitching began and then the finishing tricks.
It’s interesting to note how many techniques and tips are employed in this one project.
Watch for the results of this Workshop at the 2015 Annual.

The CSCL Larmour Lending Library

Mrs. Reta Larmour preparing for the travelling Leather Exhibitions in the 1950’s

Dr. and Mrs. Larmour were Charter Members of CSCL who attended the very first meeting of CSCL that was held June 8th, 1950. Dr. Ralph Larmour became CSCL’s 2nd President in 1954.
Throughout the early years of our Guild, Reta Larmour organized travelling exhibitions of Canadian Leather craft. She and her husband collected patterns and books that became the genesis of the Larmour
Lending Library.

CSCL is very fortunate to have this incredible lending library that is available to Members. There are books, instructional guides, patterns, and DVD’s pertaining to leather crafting as well as design, colour, and the arts. Some of the items are literally irreplaceable, the library contains books that are out of print and many that would be very difficult to find. Many of the patterns for wallet backs, purses, book covers, often from noted known leather crafters, are unique and creative. There is an abundance of “Doodle Pages” teaching skills and providing tips that you could use for inspiration.
Paul Kitchener and Kim Winchester have been the driving forces in organizing the many boxes of the Library. Kim spent countless hours scanning the contents and listing everything. Paul has provided memory sticks listing the contents to each
Branch President and to our Website.
