2 Notes from the Editor…

When I heard that Joyce Scruton had died in mid-October, I was saddened, as I know many CSCL members were. She was a driving force in the Mississauga Guild and influenced countless leather crafters in the Oakville and Hamilton area. It was an easy decision to have a picture of Joyce on the cover of this issue of Canadian Leathercraft, it was more difficult to choose the right picture. The cover image I chose was from the 2014 Annual when, after the Banquet, we were being entertained by a talented singer-guitarist. I saw Joyce tapping her toes to the music while sitting at the table, then Lauch Harrison grabbed her hand and they took over the dance floor. It was joyful and Joyce was in her element.
Read more about Joyce on page 3, with a picture of her always smiling face.
This Autumn has taken a toll on CSCL members, along with Joyce’s passing, Lauch Harrison lost his Mother, CSCL extends sympathy to Lauch and his family. Barbara
Chynoweth underwent surgery, but is on the mend.
In spite of being in recovery mode, Barbara found the energy to submit some ideas for leathercraft projects. See pages 5 and 6.
Paul Kitchener led the “Lasted Boxes Workshop” with an eager group of crafters and observers in November, with promises of CSCL’s originality and creativity. More on page 4.

Remembering Joyce Scruton

April 2, 1928 –October 17 2015

She was a whirlwind and a lady. I met Joyce more than 30 years ago, when she was talking about the leather crafters in Mississauga, and how they were planning to start a Guild, as part of CSCL. Joyce, Don MacLeod and Lea Love were the organizers and I believe, formed the first Executive. She was always so proud of the Mississauga Guild and its talented members.
I think I might have been in the Tandy Store that Joyce managed only once, but I know that it was the meeting place and teaching centre for the immediate area and beyond. She was an astute business woman, but also, a respected and beloved teacher.
Joyce’s knowledge of leather, supplies and techniques is legendary. Even when health issues precluded active participation in crafting, she was always there giving advice and tips.
She was very proud of achieving her Associate status and simply overwhelmed when CSCL gave her an Honourary Life Membership.
CSCL extends heartfelt sympathy to Joyce’s family and friends.
Joyce was generous with both her time and her knowledge at Annuals. I can not even guess at how many Draw Tickets she sold through the years!
We’ll miss you Joyce…

4 Workshop for Making a Lasted Box
The ambitious workshop was held Saturday, November 14th, 2015 in
Mississauga and led by Paul Kitchener with assistance from Lauch Harrison and Sean Dalgetty. Eleven CSCL members and a guest observer attended the workshop.
Although many had already made a lasted box before, new tips were learned and as always, the camaraderie of the attendees made the workshop fun and productive.
Many got their boxes’ two parts completed and dried. Next steps will involve colouring and finishing. Expect to see some lasted boxes at the 2016 Annual Weekend.

5 Thanks to Barbara Chynoweth and the Norland Branch for the following projects.

The Nativity Scene

This is something that you can make from scraps of different pieces of leather.

First prepare a pattern and then gather your scraps of leather. Trace out your pieces and cut them out, glue them together. Be creative add details and colours. You can use a thin piece of leather to glue the thicker pieces to give back support.

Use whatever coloured scraps you can find, or dye any that you need to give more character.
You can add trees and animals and shepherds.
Have fun.

Candy Cane Brooch
This can be made as a brooch or a Christmas Tree decoration. Make your pattern what size you want it to be, mark with a styles and cut out. If you are doing a Christmas Tree decoration leave a place to punch a hole to put the string in, if you are doing a brooch glue the pin bar on the back.
