Notes from the Editor…
Well another Annual Weekend has come and gone with lots of memories of wonderful people, laughter, and superb leather craft. Toronto Branch took on the challenge of the weekend and President Barbara Chynoweth and her team did a fine job in keeping CSCL members busy learning and having fun.
See the details of the Annual and some of the excellent leather craft in the following pages.
As you will have seen by the cover photo, my Woodstock Branch won the 2009 Weston Trophy; well it’s really hard to say, “won”, since Woodstock was the only entry in the annual Branch Competition this year. Come on Norland, Toronto,
Mississauga, and yes, even Hamilton, get busy for next year and get your articles ready for the 2010 Annual. Woodstock welcomes the competition!
CSCL sadly reports the passing of Norland Member and popular CSCL member, Emma Windatt. Emma always brought laughter and fun to Annual weekends with her poetry, dancing, and enthusiasm
In March, Peter Grove led the Sandal Workshop and 8 CSCLer’s made sandals by the end of the day. See the results and the instructions to make your own pair of Birkenstock-Like Sandals, written by Karen Webber, in this edition.
2010 will be a big year for CSCL, we have our 60th Anniversary to celebrate and we’re having a Biennial Exhibition. Start planning now and lets have a big year. Woodstock Branch will be hosting the 60th Annual and Ontario Crafts
Council in Toronto will likely be the site of the exhibition to be held in the late summer. Details as they evolve will be found in future Newsletter issues.

2009 CSCL Annual Weekend (May 1, 2, 3) hosted by Toronto Branch

On a sunny Friday afternoon, CSCL members began arriving at the Lindsay Inn,
Lindsay Ontario. There were hugs and warm greetings as members from Hamilton, Toronto, Woodstock, Mississauga, and Norland came together for the 59th CSCL
Annual Weekend. Branch display tables started taking shape as members organized for the activities to come.
Toronto Branch hosted the weekend and President, Barb Chynoweth with her team comprised of Toronto members and a few support people from the Norland bunch welcomed the out-of-towners.
Friday night brought out the judges, led by Chairman, David McPherson FCSCL to adjudicate the members’ work of the past year. Fellow judges this year were Nancy Durham, Sean Dalgetty, Paul Kitchener, and David. It took them until about 11:00pm to decide about the Weston Trophy, Craftsman and Salon Ribbons, and the Annual Awards.

Meanwhile, Toronto Member, Cindy Magura presented her ideas about Leather Design and where to get resources. Although many design books do not address leather craft specifically, they can be adapted. Cindy has skillfully done that in the interesting articles she has created.

Saturday morning started sunny as about 40 CSCLer’s assembled for the Annual
General Meeting. President Phyllis McHale called on Barbara Chynoweth, President of the Toronto Branch, to formally welcome everyone to the 59th CSCL Annual Weekend.
Phyllis invited all the members to review the annual reports given to them and then called for a motion to continue, for another year, to have only 4 articles for the Branch competition, the Weston Trophy. After being Carried, Phyllis moved onto new business. CSCL is in the process of organizing the 2010 Biennial, which could likely be held at the Ontario Crafts Council in Toronto from the end of August through most of September 2010. Judging dates will probably be about the end of May – so start thinking about what you could create for this exciting exhibition. Details will be published in future newsletters.
David McPherson, Chairman of the Council of Fellows then presented his own Branch from Woodstock with the 2009 Weston Trophy. Madeleine Mitchell, Woodstock
President accepted the trophy on behalf of herself (Picture Frame), Lauren (Teardrop Box) and David McPherson (“Elmira” Box), and Jan Malec (Molded Goat). David asked all Branches to look at entering next year’s competition.
At the close of business part of the meeting, Madeleine Mitchell invited everyone to the 2010 Annual Weekend that will be held in Oxford County (details will follow in the newsletters). She also issued a challenge for all members to produce a leather “quilt” square for CSCL’s 60th Anniversary next year. It must be a 6” X 6” square, leather, at least 3-4oz weight, any design you wish. Express your wishes for the 60th or anything about CSCL. Again, more details will be released closer to the Annual.
Phyllis then conducted a lively general members discussion mentioning topics from the new Junior members and finding tools for them to sources of tracing film and possible workshop programs.

The Draw table was designated the “White Cow” table and the ticket sales began as the membership broke for lunch.
After lunch, Barbara Chynoweth and Kevin Magura presented a slide presentation of past CSCL articles, some dating back to the early days of CSCL, in the 1950’s up to the 1970’s. Ticket draws followed and the leather craft began…
Ryan Wright conducted “Making a Rose” workshop with about a dozen members actively participating.

Meanwhile, across the room, Sean Dalgetty and Lauch Harrison presented “Tools” demonstrating the care and use of various leather crafting tools.

Draws continued through the afternoon with major draws from the President’s Prizes (donated by CSCL Branches and individuals) and of course, the “White Cow” tables bringing fun and laughter.
Keeping with the “Seventies” theme, CSCL members attended the Annual Banquet listening to 70’s music and wearing Granny dresses, headbands, and Peace Signs galore.

Lauch Harrison held his breath as he attempted to button his 70’s Harris Tweed Jacket over his 2009 frame, and then he sat down on a “Whoppee” cushion! The room erupted in laughter setting the tone for the rest of the evening.
Following the delicious buffet meal, David McPherson presented the Annual Award Certificates to 5 members. (List follows in this issue)
For entertainment, Toronto Branch member, Kevin Magura called “Bingo” and
CSCLer’s enthusiastically checked their cards and cheered on the winners.
On the following, sunny Sunday, members came together for the last two workshops, “Making a Belt” with Sean Dalgetty and “The Ways to Earn Money with Your
Leatherwork” with Karen Webber.
By lunchtime, the displays were taken down, tools and workshop projects were packed away and CSCL members said their “Goodbyes” to old friends and new. Thanks
Toronto Branch for another memorable CSCL weekend!

Goodbye Auntie Em

Emma Windatt, the “Auntie Em” or AN.T.M for the Norland
Branch and all of CSCL passed away in March of 2009 after a long and happy life. Emma always had a warm smile with a joke or a poem to enlighten CSCL get- togethers. It wasn’t unusual for Emma to be dancing in the hallways late at night at CSCL Annuals.
She’ll be missed by CSCL and all the lives she touched.
A memorial will be held July 24th at the Legion Hall in
Fenelon Falls. All welcome to attend.
Making a Pair of Birkenstock-Like Sandals with Peter Grove FCSCL by Karen Webber
Necessary Materials -5oz. weight leather
Ortho lining leather [all chrome chemicals have been removed] [available at Tundra*]
Formed foot bed [your size] [available at Tundra*]
Soling Material [available at Tundra*]
4x 1” buckles [Birkenstock Style available at Tundra*]
Your pattern size would also be available from Tundra*
*Peter Grove at Tundra Leather 905- 527-7745 during business hours.
or email: [email protected] or [email protected]

For European sizes and the conversion table–see www.healthyfeetstore.com/sizingchart.html look for sizing chart at the bottom of page
Steps
-glue your top 5oz. leather together to your lining leather
-trace your pattern pieces onto the leather and then cut out in your preferred method
-cut 2 pieces of ortho leather bigger than your foot bed
-glue the above to the foot beds; there should be an extra edge that will now be carefully trimmed away with leather scissors
-placing one of the four side straps onto the marked underside of the foot bed, wrap the side panel up the edge, holding it place while you mark where the top edge of the foot bed hits the lining. This will be your guide for skiving. Do the same with the other
3 side pieces
-on all four side panels-lining side up- start to skive 1mm below your newly marked line.
Some of us started with a French knife and finished the feathered bottom with a head knife.
-glue sides to the foot bed remembering that the buckles will sit on the outside of the foot.
-cut out 2 foot soles 1 cm all around bigger than your foot bed
-glue foot beds to the soles
-over a shoe last hammer soles and foot beds together
-now do a rough trim of the soling material, leaving a 2mm overhang
-now, using a lip knife, carefully trim overhanging sole leather flush with the foot bed
-once more go back to the last and hammer the sole and foot bed together

Canadian Leathercraft – Spring 2009 – Newsletter by CSCL, page 9 — photograph 1

Page 10

-add buckles
-one the other side, placing your foot in the sandal mark your main hole and then mark a second one 3/4cm tighter as there is a good chance the leather will give a little.
That’s it, You’re Done
