Notes from the Editor…
All the planning and preparations are complete, all the worries and glitches are put aside and the goal becomes "Celebrate 60 years of CSCL". These are the thoughts I had, along with my team, on the afternoon of the 14th of May, 2010. Woodstock Branch CSCL was hosting the Annual Weekend at the Quality Hotel in Woodstock. Not only was it to be an Annual, but it was the 60th
Anniversary...the Diamond Anniversary, of an organization I have been associated with for 35 years.
Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft was started in 1950 in Toronto. Those crafters wanted a society distinctly Canadian - they were already skilled leather workers and they wanted to teach and share and further their love of leather. In the earliest editions of the bulletin "Canadian Leathercraft", names like Deane Russell (1st President), Robert Muma (Treasurer), Reta Lamour (started the lending library and drafted the constitution) worked tirelessly to gather leathercrafters into branches and organize huge sales at the Canadian National Exhibition, Central Canada Exhibition, and the Pacific National Exhibition. Early in 1952, the Society mounted a travelling Exhibition that crossed Canada for four months.
When I joined CSCL about 1975, a number of the Charter Members were still active - I learned turned edges and skiving techniques from Fred Brown FCSCL, Helen Wheaton FCSCL showed me glovemaking, Robert Muma shared his subtle colouring and tooling. Up and comers were Ruth Haig FCSCL blowing away the competition with a leather Lunch Box, Carol McLean FCSCL receiving her Fellowship the same year (1975) I got my first Salon Ribbon. Irva Ford FCSCL, the Hamilton
President, working her shift at the CNE and calling me with a suggestion on how to improve an item I had submitted.
As the years passed, new "stars" filled the CSCL Annual Display tables - Sean Dalgetty FCSCL, Nancy Durham FCSCL, Karla Van Horne, Lillian Kay, Joyce Scruton ACSCL, Peter Grove FCSCL, Hilda Chynoweth, Bill Whittingham, Silva Fox, Bruce White, Jack Meharg, Loreen Manuel, David McPherson FCSCL, and many others.
We started the CSCL Leather Quilt, made by members, in 1990, at the 40th Anniversary, and brought it along to the 60th; it is newly restrung, and about 20 new pieces have been added. Some members are no longer with us, making it all the more special. The quilt is just another way that CSCL continues to honour its members and their skills.

CSCL’s 60th Anniversary Annual Weekend Report
May 14, 15, 16, 2010
Hosted by the Woodstock Branch CSCL at the Woodstock Quality Hotel
Back in 1950 when CSCL began, Louis St Laurent was Prime Minister of Canada, and the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup! (against the Montreal Canadiens)
About 40 CSCL members spent a lovely May weekend at the Woodstock Quality Hotel at the 60th Annual Weekend of Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft. Madeleine Mitchell, President of the Woodstock Branch CSCL, and her team of local members welcomed CSCLers from Hamilton, Mississauga, Toronto, and Norland.
During the 60th Annual General Meeting
As the Friday evening fell, Branch Display tables were set up, friends embraced, and the CSCL Fellows and Associates prepared to Judge the amazing leather articles at the 60th. Marion Kehoe, member of Woodstock CSCL for over 50 years, demonstrated her “Creative Jewelry” to an enthusiastic crowd in the Hospitality Suite.
Marion’s “Potato” Jewelry fascinated the group. Snacks and conversation followed.
Saturday May 15, 2010 began with Phyllis McHale, President of CSCL opening the 60th Annual General Meeting of CSCL. After a welcome from Madeleine Mitchell, President of the Woodstock Branch CSCL, Phyllis presented her President’s Report followed by Annual Reports by Executive Officers and Committees, including the Treasurer’s Report.
The new Slate of Officers for 2010-2012 was presented, noting some new faces. See the complete list on Page 10. If you wish to receive a copy of all the Annual Reports, please contact Barbara Chynoweth, at [email protected] or 701-45 Balliol St., Toronto, ON M4S 1C3.
Discussion followed regarding the upcoming Biennial Exhibition LEATHER
2010: CONTAINMENT opening August 26th at the OCC Gallery in Toronto.

5 This year three Branches entered the Weston Trophy Branch competition – Mississauga, Woodstock and the Winning Entry from Hamilton! Congratulations to Rob Regan, Laima Sellmer, Amy Kenny, and Lester Pinter. See the photos of their pieces on Page 8.
Ribbons were next on the agenda and Lauch Harrison ACSCL, presented Participation
Ribbons to everyone who had articles judged on the Display Tables. He then went on to present Craftsman and Salon Ribbons, the complete list is included in this issue.
Nancy Durham FCSCL reminded members that the CSCL Question box is available for asking questions about leather crafting as well as concerns about judging concerns and
CSCL standards.
Following the Lunch Break, Lauch Harrison ACSCL demonstrated “Sharpening an Awl” and answered questions about tools and their maintenance. Lauch has a wealth of knowledge that he generously shares. Hamilton Branch even donated a Stitching Horse for a Special Draw.
During the afternoon break–Ticket Draws, the always fun time, took place – with members swooping up the many treasures they could not live without! Many Thanks from the
Woodstock Branch for the wonderful Special Draw items from Tundra Leather Hamilton, Tandy Leather Factory Mississauga, the CSCL Branches, and CSCL Members.
Sean Dalgetty FCSCL came to Woodstock’s rescue and presented his Workshop on making a “Needle Case” during the second session of the afternoon. Another workshop leader couldn’t make it and Sean, kindly filled in and did a great job –Thanks Sean!
Some outside guests visited in the late afternoon as the workshop was wrapping up.
The evening activities started with mingling and music in the Joe Boyle Room. A duo composed of “Banjo Jim and Tuba Tom” entertained prior to the start of the Annual
Banquet. CSCL Members and guests celebrated 60 years with food and fun, more draws, and the Special Awards Presentations. David McPherson FCSCL presented these prestigious prizes to deserving CSCL crafters. The list is enclosed in this edition.
Outgoing President Phyllis Mchale was presented with a gift by incoming CSCL President, Barbara Chynoweth.
More entertainment followed by Banjo Jim Groulx and Tuba Tom Elliot. With lots of toe tapping and spoons clacking...
Della on the Spoons with Banjo Jim
Carol McLean FCSCL was called on to introduce our Special Guest Walter Muma presenting “A Life Lived Creatively”.

Page 6
6 Walter’s parents, Robert and Dorothy Muma were well known in CSCL as founding members, excellent resources of CSCL history, and dedicated Judges for many years.
Walter spoke eloquently of his father’s love of crafting, art, nature, especially mosses. He was able to interconnect his heritage with his own passion for nature. Walter’s adventures throughout Canada were illustrated with thrilling images and descriptions of nature that were inspiring, humorous, and creative. Lauren McPherson thanked Walter for his excellent presentation.
60th Anniversary Cake was served and closed the CSCL Annual Banquet. Members reminisced as the display tables were taken down.
Guest Workshop leader, Vivian Hutcheson of Shakespeare, ON, presented “Creative
Gilding on Leather” ON. About 20 CSCL members tried a new technique of applying silver, gold, and variegated gild foil to leather samples that were embossed. Thanks to
Peter Grove. Vivian guided members through the various steps and provide a list of where to acquire resources for trying more gild on leather projects.
Vivian Hutcheson owns the “Green Cottage Gallery” and a must see in Shakespeare.
See you all in Hamilton next Spring for the 61st Annual!
Officially, the Annual weekend ended after the workshop but some hardworking members moved on to the judging for the biennial exhibition, LEATHER 2010: CONTAINMENT.
Mark your calendar for the August 26th opening and presentation of Awards.

An Era has Passed…
In our last issue of Canadian Leathercraft, Winter 2009-2010, we celebrated the 100th Birthday, on February 13th 2010, of the matriarch of the Chynoweth Family, Hilda
Chynoweth.
With sadness we must report that Hilda passed away March 1st, 2010 in her 101st year.
This year’s Annual certainly missed Hilda. Daughters Phyllis McHale, Della Chynoweth, and Barbara Chynoweth paid tribute to their mother who among, her other accomplishments, organized the Norland Leather Branch of CSCL.
