2 Notes from the Editor…

Well, leave it to the Hamilton Branch of CSCL to make the 61st Annual Weekend something to remember! How about the location!? A castle – Dundurn Castle, sitting on the shore of Lake
Ontario. We actually had displays and our workshop in the Coach House, and the Hayloft served as the meeting hall and banquet site. Sean Dalgetty FCSCL and Lauch Harrison ACSCL and their
Hamilton members made the Annual enjoyable and rewarding. Read about more of the details of the Annual in this issue.
New Awards and categories were highlighted at the Annual, as well as the number of new members who took them home. See the Ribbon and Award Winners lists on Pages 6, 7, 8 with some pictures.
Barbara Chynoweth reported back in January 2011 that the Toronto Branch had closed. In my last editorial I reminiscenced that CSCL had other Branches that had also folded. I actually forgot two branches –Belleville and Tillsonburg. Thanks to Marilyn Harry for emailing me about Belleville.
Marilyn also wrote an additional article about Neat’s Foot Oil, after reading Peter Grove’s piece in the Winter Newsletter. It seems Neat’s Foot does more than condition leather. You’ll find out what in this issue.
At the Annual this year, we had three exceptional donations. David Darbyshire the husband of the late Hilda Darbyshire FCSCL donated a case of leather tools and supplies and Beula Reynolds ACSCL donated two original Robert Muma Books. Both Hilda and Beula were former Woodstock Branch members. See who got these special gifts as well as the handmade Awl created by Lester Pinter of the Hamilton Branch.
As another Annual ends another Annual planning begins…it will be Mississauga’s turn to continue the tradition in 2012.

I 'm still looking for an" Eastern Star" logo stamp. If anyone has one they'd be willing to sell. I 'm very interested, as the local Chapter wants to find one. I know they were made years ago but are not available anymore.

Canadian Leather Crafters Celebrate 61 Years

Dundurn Castle, Hamilton, Ontario

The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft (CSCL) recently celebrated its 61st anniversary at a Castle! Dundurn Castle’s Coach House in Hamilton Ontario was the location for the Annual General Meeting and all the fun and learning when leather crafters get together. Sean Dalgetty FCSCL, President of the Hamilton Branch hosted the Spring weekend and although the weather was rainy and windy, the atmosphere indoors was welcoming.
The General Annual Meeting was presided over by President Barbara Chynoweth.

Secretary/Treasurer Della Chynoweth and CSCL President Barbara Chynoweth

Not only did Hamilton branch of CSCL host the events they won the Branch Competition for the Weston Trophy, second time in two years. Salon and Craftsman Ribbons and the Annual
Awards recognized some of the best leather done by both the experienced and the newer CSCL crafters. CSCL has been adding new awards in the past several years and encourages everybody to submit entries.
Chairman of the Council of Fellows and the Board of Selection were available for discussion of judging criteria all during the weekend that proved to be a “hot topic”, even at the AGM.

Hamilton’s winning Entry of 5 articles

Lauch Harrison ACSCL, who has been part of the judging contingency, presented an informative talk on “What the Judges Look For “ Friday evening. On Saturday afternoon, Rob Regan discussed “Safety in the Workshop” –who would have known crafters have to be so safety conscious? Meanwhile, a workshop to make “Leather Covered Book Ends” got members involved in the construction and design of book ends that allow for plenty of creativity. Madeleine Mitchell and Nancy Durham FCSCL had participants cutting, colouring, and assembling their projects.

Saturday evening, following the fun of the draws and work of the demonstrations, allowed CSCLers to enjoy a sumptuous Banquet and presentation of the Special Annual Awards. David McPherson congratulated winners and on, at least one occasion, was totally surprised by the winners reaction…we’ll leave at that David.

5 On Sunday morning, Peter Grove FCSCL talked and demonstrated the use of a multitude of tools from his outstanding collection. If ever there is a question about using a tool or the quality of a product, Peter is the man you want to consult.

Currently, CSCL has three branches in Ontario and members-at large throughout the country. In the last year, two Branches have folded, but the remaining three branches have added new members thanks to Membership Chair, Tracey Howard and CSCL Vice-President Rob Regan who challenged Branches to a Membership drive.
The quarterly newsletter, “Canadian Leathercraft” is available to members and a website is available at www.canadianleathercraft.org as well as access to the many skilled and generous crafters in the guild.

The 2011 Annual Weekend of CSCL will be remembered for the unique setting as well as the wonderful leather craft displays, the many ribbons and awards, the laughter, and as always, the friendly people.

Respectfully submitted, Madeleine

Another Use for Neat’s Foot Oil From Marilyn Harry, (by email)
Member-at-Large and former Belleville Branch Member

Regarding the article on Neat's Foot Oil - it is very good for sore muscles and joints on a human, personal experience. Our family originally heard of it from a chiropractor in Marmora. My mother was complaining about her fingers hurting and starting to curl up (she was told she just had to live with it).
The chiropractor sent her to the drug store to get some neat's foot oil and dab a bit on each knuckle several times a day. In a very short time, her fingers had straightened out and the pain was gone.
Needlessly to say, it became a staple on our family’s medical shelf. Last year, I developed bursitis in both hips and during the night it was especially painful, so I reached for the neat's foot oil and the aloe vera gel to help get me through the nights. I over used it eventually more than my skin would absorb and it soaked into my clothes, seats and chairs until I realized I was using too much. I backed off the quantity at the time and the oil was eventually absorbed in the upholstery and washed out of the clothes. The sheets had to be sprayed with spot remover, but it worked. As with everything, neat's foot oil needs to be used with caution and not necessarily work for everyone, but it did for our family.

Editor’s Note: Marilyn concludes with “Keeping fair to middlin'.” and don’t let the things you can't do Stop you from doing the things you can do!
