Notes from the Editor…
Hilda Chynoweth is celebrating her 100th year as of February 13th, 2010. Through the years I have known Hilda, she has been a shining star in the Norland Leather Guild. Her many years leathercrafting have produced not only wonderful hand made leather goods, but also a tradition of leather crafting among her close knit family. All four daughters, Phyllis, Della,
Barbara, and Sandra have served CSCL and even son-in-law Miles and grand daughter Tracey have joined and participated in CSCL Annuals and Executive Council. Hilda has continued through the years teaching and mentoring Norland members and indeed most of CSCL. At the 2008 Annual held in Lindsay, Hilda demonstrated “Mystery Braided Bracelets” - her dexterity and problem solving amazed the much younger audience. CSCL members are all invited to the upcoming celebration for Hilda, get the details in this issue.
Best Wishes Hilda as you venture into your second century!

Let’s Make A Tool – A Creaser Written by V. Farrara CSCL Member, Winter 1978
Materials:
5 Popsicle sticks
Heavy thread, any colour White glue (for wood)
Method:
Number each stick with a pencil –1 to 5
Apply glue to both sides of number 2, 3, and 4.
Stack all 5 Popsicle sticks evenly, then shift number 2 and number 4 back
¼ inch. This leaves at staggered with 1,3, and 5, longer than 2, 4.
Hold tight and begin winding your thread round and round tightly from top to bottom, leaving extended ends clear. The glue oozing from the sides will hold the thread fast. The thread will act as a grip when thoroughly dries. Points can be thinned for finer lines.
Now you have a three edged creaser and a two edged creaser.
Variations:
A single creaser can be made with five sticks, having a double support on both sides, or, you can have your number 4 stick extend as a guide over the edge of your leather.
As the wood burnishes very well, I find myself using this tool even after years of leatherwork. Try making several.
Tool Sharpening Tips from former CSCLer Harold Brister (Mississauga Branch) –and another use for Popsicle sticks.
- the striking strip on a match pack is a perfect small sharpener, fine in texture, handy to carry, and cheap. Harold uses this for touch up sharpening for diamond awls.
- A business card, onto which jeweller’s rouge has been rubbed, makes a perfect small strop to go with the match pack. Harold even strops the snapoff, throw-away blades on his Olfa knife. Why waste!
- Popsicle sticks can be used covered with emery cloth and used to sharpen belt slot hole punches.
Harold pointed out that a tool that is stropped gently and often, rarely needs to be sharpened on a stone. Keep a small strop handy at all times for maximum efficiency from your tools.
