Notes from the Editor… Sorry for the lateness of this issue – computer glitches!
I’ve had enough of this winter! Sure the Farmer’s Almanac predicted an “old fashioned winter” but did it have to mean so much snow shoveling! Of course, some CSCL members escaped our Canadian winter by going to warmers climes for a while…but they have to come back sometime. I had an email from Paul Kitchener, while, he and Linda were in Sydney, Australia where their summer months are our winter months. I think he said they were returning about the end of January to Toronto – I’ll bet they were ready to get back on the plane shortly after they touched down. See if Paul made it back for the Jewelry Workshop on February 24th further on in this issue.
Although the days are starting to get longer, there’s still enough evening time to get your projects for the upcoming Biennial Exhibition and Annual weekend finished. Take note that for the Biennial you can choose articles you have made in the last 2 years.
The Annual’s Weston Trophy Branch Competition requires four new articles from Branch members. Last year, David McPherson FCSCL and Chair of the Council of Fellows said that all 5 Branches participated –let’s see if in 2008, we can repeat that accomplishment.
Norland Branch is busily planning both the Biennial and the Annual for CSCL in 2008. First the Leather Biennial Exhibition will be at the Lindsay Art Gallery during April and then the 2008 Annual Weekend will be held at the Lindsay Inn on May 2,3,4. Read about these CSCL events in this issue.
Your input is always welcomed! The CSCL Newsletter will always find room for contributions of news, tips, questions –just contact me at [email protected] or write to Madeleine Mitchell, 17 Light St., Woodstock, ON N4S 6G7

From the Leather 2006 Exhibition Woodstock Branch is sad to report the loss of two members: Members fondly remembered Jean Pickering who passed away Friday, January 18, 2008. Jean served as Woodstock Branch Treasurer for several years and also was a Director on the CSCL Executive

3 Council. Quietly, Jean would create superb leather pieces and contributed to Weston Trophy and
Biennial Exhibitions.
Sadly, Woodstock lost another former Branch member in December 2007, Joy Hutcheson. Joy had a touch with leather that would highlight the beauty of the leather with simple, elegant design.

The Chynoweth clan celebrated Hilda’s 98th February 13, 2008.

5 It was a surprisingly pleasant Sunday morning in late February that 9 CSCL members got together at the Mississauga Leather Factory for the Jewelry Workshop. In attendance was the oldest CSCL working member, Hilda Chynoweth, accompanied by her two daughters, Phyllis and Barbara. Carol Jackson made the trip from Ottawa – you might have met Carol at the 2007
Annual when she attended with Jaime from Zelikowitz Leathers. Jim Wilkes came in from
Cambridge and the Woodstock contingency included Nancy Durham, Madeleine Mitchell, and new member, Lauren McPherson. Lauch Harrison accompanied Peter from Hamilton – and although Peter scooted off on the 407 Toll Road, just out of Hamilton, Nancy Durham driving the Woodstock group, spotted him. Nancy stayed on the 403 and ended up at the workshop before Peter! …and No Toll! I think Lauch had to have a Timmie’s stop before the workshop.
Peter Grove began the morning with an interesting leather bracelet made from 3 strips of leather.

Peter guided us through the steps of cutting, dyeing, attaching the hardware, and stitching to finish.
You’ll find Peter’s notes and the Bracelet Pattern at the end of this issue.

Tool Tip from Peter: Because there are numerous 1 ¼” slits cut into the bracelets, Peter made himself a tool. He bought a steel paint scraper from the local hardware store. Cut off about half of the blade and sharpened the edge. A perfect 1 ¼” cut everytime!

Samples of Peter’s Bracelets

Paul Kitchener’s creative talents cannot be denied, and his part of the Jewelry Workshop asked us to stretch our ideas of jewelry making. He explored design and decoration using precious and semi-precious stones –including some opals, brought back from his recent around the world tour that included an Opal Mine in Australia. He spoke of trying various designs and asked us to try our hand at our own neck piece. He supplied leather (3 –4oz cowhide) and some of us got our own design on the leather and even cut out. The neck clasp presents a challenge and Paul explored ideas to conceal the clasp and to also incorporate it in the design.

Experimenting on paper first, CSCLer’s explored designs for Jewelry that could be applied to leather. As the workshop drew to an end, ideas were flowing with promises of completed articles by the Biennial or at least by the time of the 2008 Annual.

Many Thanks to Peter and Paul for their wealth of ideas and generous and patient dedication to furthering the art of leathercraft.
