Note from the Editor....

I would like to welcome you to my first edition of the CSCL Canadian Leathercraft. After 13 years of being the Editor, Madeleine Mitchell has decided to retire. Madeleine left some big shoes to fill, and I hope I can fill them.

I am looking for article to publish in the Newsletter, also what would you like to see covered in the newsletter? Please send me your ideas. Our next edition should be coming out the end of August and I am looking for articles from the Members-at-Large.

Highlights from the Past Executive Council Meetings...

January — Lauch Harrison reported that there will be some workshops coming up this spring. Norland Branch advised that they are working on the plans for the 2016 Annual.

February — Lauch Harrison updated us on the schedule of upcoming workshops. Constitution — Lauch Harrison moved, Paul Kitchener seconded that the Constitution be accepted as rewritten for presentation to the general membership to be voted on at the Annual Meeting. Carried.

March — The Constitution Committee reported that the revised Constitution has been sent out electronically to those with Email and by regular post for those who don’t.

April — It was suggested at our meeting that we look into having some of our meetings by conference call or skype especially those in the winter. This is being investigated. Constitution Committee reported that we will be voting on the changes to the Constitution and By-laws at the Annual.

Workshops

The Previous Annual gave rise to a List of Workshops. The Workshop Committee has been using the list with very good success and attendance. The Fall workshop on Lasting Boxes was well attended and created a profit to go to the Society. Paul Kitchener not only made the space available he also donated some of the leather used in the projects. Lauch and Sean were there to offer advice and help. The next Workshop was On Machine Sewing — part 1 - the class was well attended and everyone in attendance got to use various sewing machines at Paul's Focused on Food Warehouse. Sean and Paul explained the mechanics of the machines; the project was a small zippered coin purse. Due to limited time Sewing - Part 2 will be held during the next couple of months. The interest in Eugene's pewter castings gave rise to a Pewter Casting — part 1 Workshop held in April, attended by 7 people, on mould making and silicone casting. The use of oven hardening resins to make the originals and then encase them using a two part flexible silicone polymer will be explored further when Pewter Casting - part 2 of the workshop takes place in the near future.

The Workshop Committee is looking for suggestions on what you would like to do a workshop on, email Lauch at I with your ideas or suggestions.

The 66th Annual CSCL Convention

The Norland Branch of the CSCL welcomed everyone to the fun filled weekend and the weather co-operated with sunshine, rain and snow over the weekend, making everyone glad to be inside and turning their thoughts to a warmer climate.

Friday night the attendees were given a challenge – those who wanted to participate were given a box with pieces of leather in and they were given 2 hours to create something. Tools and notions were supplied for them to use.

The finished creations are in the right hand picture and some of the hotel staff where very happy to act as judges. Lauch Harrison’s creation was picked for first and Jess Chynoweth’s creation was picked for second.
