SWANSEA

The Swansea Horticultural Society also had a happy time on Wednesday evening November 23rd, when they were honoured by having Mrs. Mary Hamilton, the assistant director of District 14 of the Ontario Horticultural Association conduct their annual election of officers. Mrs. Hamilton is an exceptionally good assistant to our director Mr. Clarence Baker. She evidently has some very good friends for she tells us that on the spur of the moment she'll call one of them up and away they go to some horticultural meeting. There was only one sad part to the evening, she never drew my ticket when the draw was made.

The speaker of the evening was Mrs. Gladys Riddell, a member of the Swansea Society and also President of the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft. Mrs. Riddell demonstrated the art of making items from leather, there being ten basic steps. The following list is only the title of each step: (1) tracing the pattern on a special material, (2) putting in the veins of the leaf, (3) cutting out the maple leaf, (4) glue the pin bar on, (5) saturate with yellow, (6), (7) and (8) add green and other colours, (9) polish coating, and (10) shellac. The demonstration proved most interesting to the members many of whom crowded around the demonstration table afterwards. The program convenor had also secured three films from the National Film Board but time only permitted the use of one. The film entitled Tara's Mulch Garden illustrated the growing of vegetables in mulch with exceptionally fine results. The 1977 officers were re-elected for a further two year term.

The words above are the document’s own, as the paper prints them. Spelling and spacing are left as they stand.
