Using the photographs
The 4,389 photographs in the Photo Gallery are free to use for any non-commercial purpose. You do not need to ask: the licence, Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 (CC BY-NC 4.0), is the permission. Credit the archive, and that is all.
You may
- copy, download and share the photographs
- crop, edit or adapt them
- use them in teaching, research, talks, articles, club and family histories, non-commercial websites and social media
You must
- credit the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft archive
- link to the album the photograph comes from
- say that the licence is CC BY-NC 4.0, and whether you changed the picture
You may not
- sell the photographs or use them in advertising, products or paid publications
- suggest that the Society endorses you or your use of them
How to give credit
Copy this line and put the album’s title and address in place of the example’s:
Photograph: “2002 CSCL photos”, Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft archive, https://canadianleathercraft.org/photo-gallery/2002-cscl-photos/, CC BY-NC 4.0.
On a web page, link the album’s address and the words “CC BY-NC 4.0” to the licence. Where the album names the maker of the piece shown, or the photographer, name them too.
Getting a photograph at full size
Open the album and click a photograph to see it larger. In the Virtual Competitions a “Full size” link under each photograph gives the original file, some of them over 10 MB.
What the licence does not cover
- The leatherwork itself. A piece shown in a photograph is its maker’s own design: the licence covers the photograph, not the right to copy the work.
- The newsletters and the Society’s papers. Their pictures and text are not under this licence. You may quote them briefly and cite them (each page offers a ready-made citation); to reproduce a whole article, page or picture, please ask the archive first.
- Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Commons accepts only licences that allow commercial use, so most of these photographs cannot be uploaded there. The exception is Eugene Pik’s own work: the photographs in most of his albums and his Virtual Competition entries are his, released under CC BY-SA 4.0 (the licence of his uploads to Wikimedia Commons), free for any use with credit to him, adaptations shared alike. His dragon carvings are the exception: the designs are another artist’s, used with permission for his own work, so their photographs are not licensed for reuse at all. The note at the foot of each album says which applies.
The people in the photographs
Many of the photographs show members of the Society at meetings, workshops and exhibitions. Please use them with the respect the people in them are owed, and never in a way that would embarrass them.
Asking
To ask permission for a use the licence does not cover, to say who is in a photograph, or to ask for a photograph of you to be taken down, use Contact the archive.
