This page is a biography of Jim Wilkes. The Society’s own record of Jim Wilkes — the offices held, the standings conferred and the awards won — is on the register page.
From the exhibition brochure for Leather 2013 — Creative Versatility, the Society’s show at the Woodstock Art Gallery, 12 January to 2 March 2013, for which each exhibitor supplied an artist statement, a biography and a note on every piece shown. Set out here as printed.
Wilkes started doing leather craft in 1994 and liked doing belts, wallets, and purses plus learning new techniques.
I get my inspiration from books that I get from Japan and travelling to IFOLG shows in the United States and taking workshops with Master Leathercraft people down there. Another inspiration is looking at all the projects in the competition room and judging them with other leathercraft people from around the world and getting their opinions on the projects. These shows are good places for meeting and talking about leather with people from around the world.
I am still learning new techniques and how to think outside the box.
The pieces shown at Leather 2013
Layered Southwest Carving. Three Dimensional Leather carving done in a Southwest style; this piece was done under the leadership of Bob Beard at a workshop. I used coloured acrylic paints to add some life to the background.
