Eight-sided, hinged jewellery box

Bob Richardson

I used 6/7 veg for the main body of the box and 7/8 oz. for stiffeners around the around the insides of both the lid and bottom. The hinge at the back was bevelled at a 45 degree angle and the edges of all eight sides were bevelled at a 22.5 degree angle. I used right and left pricking irons for side panels. Re: the needle- work inlay on the lid. I saved the cut-out leather panel, cut it about 1/16” around the edges, skived the edges and the glued the fabric panel to it. This raised the inlay so that it is level with the top.

Western-style belt

Bob Richardson

I would like to submit this western-style belt to the virtual competition. The belt is made from 9/10 veg with a 3/4 oz liner. There is a strip of poster board glued inside the belt to prevent stretching. It was dyed, antiqued and hand stitched. I hand carved the name rather than stamping each letter. One of the challenging aspects of this project was to centre and position the name so that the belt loop on the back of the jeans did not cover any part of it.

Floral design guitar strap

Bob Richardson

I would like to submit this western-style, floral design guitar strap to the virtual competition. The strap is custom-fit without an adjustment strap. I used 6/7 oz veg for the strap and used 2/3 oz garment leather for the liner. It is dyed with 5% light brown and antiqued with British Tan. This strap is curved at the shoulder for a more comfortable fit. I used a Don Gonzalez pattern but had to modify it to accommodate the curve in the strap.

Custom guitar strap

Bob Richardson

I would like to submit this custom, commemorative guitar strap to the virtual competition. I used 6/7 oz veg for the strap and 2/3 oz garment leather for the liner. The artwork/pattern is my own. I dyed the strap with 50% light brown dye and it is antiqued. The recipient of this strap built a guitar for himself and wanted to commemorate the project with a custom strap. The “2022” on the front of the strap is the year he built the guitar … not the year Inmade the strap. I made it within the 18 month limit. Note that the lettering is my own (mo stamping).

Business card Holder

Julien Jans

Handcrafted cork-lined business card holder with embedded NFC chip for instant contact sharing. Technical challenges include embedding the chip without damaging its signal integrity, precision lamination of cork over the chip, and ensuring durability in a compact, flexible form—all while preserving a refined, minimalist aesthetic. dual colour threads.

Sturgeon scutes bracelet

Julien Jans

Sturgeon scute bracelet with steel core and leather lining. Vacuum-dried, naturally tanned cartilage fused into a rigid shell. Artisanal challenge lies in molding the hardened material without cracking, aligning fused scutes over metal, and integrating leather and pipe-joint border with precision. Durable, yet dangerously strong if misused.

Bayonet sheath

Julien Jans

The sheath combines rigid veg-tan leather and supple last NB caribou suede, requiring advanced wet-molding to achieve structural integrity and seamless adhesion. Precision carving allowed for the Napoleon gold-gilded laurel, while the elk suede lining demanded controlled rolled edges for a flush fit. Balancing these materials without distortion or wrinkling required expert-level assembly and drying control.

Time ripple watch strap

Julien Jans

The "Time Ripple" strap, crafted from rippled snake belly leather, demands expert handling due to its stretch-prone, uneven texture. Achieving symmetrical rolled edges with contrasting materials—supple leather and cork—requires precision skiving, tension control, and hand-stitching. The result is a structurally complex, lightweight strap evoking cosmic fluidity and mythic resonance. Nylon reinforcement and RFID chip embedded

Bilustris bag

Julien Jans

The Bilustris clutch integrates angled Kevlar, leather, and cardboard layers—requiring precise alignment and adhesive control to maintain structure without bulk. Embedding neodymium magnets for key retention and safely installing a tritium light capsule with extended 10-year glow involves advanced planning, shielding, and stability. Front panel converts to clutch via finger-slide grip.
