PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 1996-1997
I welcome all Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft members to the 47th Annual. I thank the Mississauga Branch for hosting this year's meeting at the Beacon Inn.
We've had four executive meetings this year, January's was cancelled three weeks in a row due to bad weather, so I cancelled the meeting altogether. There were some new award prizes voted on. They are: a Best Guild Display Award, Best Fellow's Award, Best Associate's Award, and a Best General Member's Award. These awards will encourage us to produce better work and better quality of products, either for guild trophy entries or perhaps for selling the goods to customers.
There have been no guild workshops this year and hope to have one in May. I feel this is sadly lacking on behalf of the executive members. We have a location for the 1998 Biennial Show. This will be held at the Etobicoke Civic Art Center next January.
Margaret La Chappelle died last fall. She had been a long outstanding member with CSCL and contributed in many ways to the guild and we are very sorry to hear of her passing. One of the many things Margaret made were shoes. Another outstanding and Fellow member that passed away last summer was Viola Harris. She has been on the Council of Fellows for many years. Both were members of the Toronto Guild. That is our sad news for this year. On the brighter side . Karla van Horn came back as a member and was granted full membership with Fellows standing this year.
I hope that the upcoming year will be a good year for the Guild and wish everyone the best.

MINUTES OF THE 46TH ANNUAL MEETING
Date: Saturday, May 4, 1996. Place: Holiday Inn, Burlington, Ontario.
The meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m. by President, Betsy Rennie. Minutes recorded by Kevin Armstrong. There were 34 members present.
The members of CSCL were welcomed by Dave Windeyer.
1. Minutes: Moved by Madeleine Mitchell and seconded by Muriel McKnight that the minutes of the 45th Annual Meeting be accepted as printed. Passed.
2. Reports: Moved by Ruth Haig and seconded by Joyce Scruton that the reports in the Annual Report be accepted as printed. Passed.
3. President's Message: Read as printed by Betsy Rennie. Moved by Allan Foss and seconded by Don Macleod that the President's report be accepted. Passed.
4. Treasurer's Report: The Treasurer, David Windeyer, reviewed the Financial Statement printed in the Annual Report. Moved by Dave Windeyer and seconded by Don Macleod that the Treasurer's Report be accepted. Passed.
5. Membership Report: Madeleine Mitchell reminded the meeting that we need more new members.
6. Council of Fellows: Dorothy Muma.
(a.) The Fellows were disappointed that there were no applications for Fellow or Associate membership.
(b.) Moved by Dorothy Muma and seconded by Don Macleod:
"that the requirement for the Weston Trophy be reduced to four pieces from the five pieces currently required. This is because Branches are reporting declining membership and have a difficult time producing 5 articles. This motion will be reviewed annually." Passed.
(c.) The Fellows expressed concern that Weston Trophy entries did not always represent current work. In particular, items submitted have had a coating of dust or display signs of frequent use. Moved by Dorothy Muma and seconded by Bill Whittingham:
"that items for Weston Trophy competition be done since the previous Annual Meeting and not been previously exhibited." Passed.
7. Weston Trophy: Bill Whittingham read the history of the Weston Trophy, and presented the plaque and ribbons to: Hamilton 79.8%: Dave Windeyer, Betsy Rennie, Dave McPherson, Ruth Haig, and Muriel McKnight. Other entries were: Woodstock 79.0%, Mississauga 72.4%, Toronto 66.6%
8. Fellowship Award: Dorothy Muma presented a Fellowship certificate to William Whittingham. Bill was awarded Fellowship at the 1995 Annual Meeting but was unable to attend.

9. CSCL Workshop Awards: These are new awards intended to promote interest in CSCL workshops. These are awarded to the member (not a Fellow or Associate) attending a workshop who showed the most improvement. Bill Whittingham presented the following awards to:
Joyce Scruton, for the Leather Bottell workshop.
Dorothy McPherson, for the One Piece Wallet workshop.
10. John Sim won the early registration draw. Rene Hackstetter won the Canadian Leathercraft contributor draw.
11. Other Business:
(a). Jack Meharg and Lillian Kay reminded the meeting that patent or copyright protection applies to original art and craft work. This protection lasts for 50 years. If members wish patterns to copy there are a number of public domain sources available.
(b). Bill Whittingham suggested that there be an award for the best branch display at the Annual. No motion.
(c). Dave McPherson asked for a show of hands for members who would be interested in a workshop on how to put together a portfolio.
12. Nominating Committee: Don Macleod presented the nominations for the new Executive and moved that nominations be closed. Seconded by Jack Meharg. Passed.
13. The President of Mississauga Branch, Bill Whittingham, invited the Society to next year's Annual.

CSCL has maintained its membership of 82, during 1996-97. However, we lost 2 valued members from Toronto. Viola Harris, Fellow and Honourary Life member and Margaret LaChappelle, a member for over 30 years. Also, Bob Milford, a member of the Mississauga Branch for about 10 years has passed away.

ARCHIVIST'S REPORT
The C.S.C.L. maintains an archives, which is the memory of the organization. It contains minutes, reports, materials relating to Annuals and Biennials, correspondence, photos, etc. As with anyones memory, it's stronger in some spots and not so strong in others. If you have any material, of any kind, that relates to the CSCL, it's affiliates, the IFLC, or individual members of the CSCL, that you do not want, please forward it to me, just in case it might be something that we have currently "forgotten".

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
1996-97 was a quiet year in library matters. No book additions were made during the year. Being an avid bookworm and book club member, I am always on the lookout for new works on leathercraft and they have been few in numbers of recent years. Al Stolman's saddle books are an exception, but I know of no CSCL members interested in saddle making, although there may be information in their books of value to other purpose.
Three branch libraries were exchanged during the year and duly audited while in my possession.
Several new videos were purchased as additions to our collection. Videos are exchanged regularly at CSCL executive meetings for branch or member use and are well received. Anybody who hasn't taken a look at this CSCL resource is encouraged to do so as this very worthwhile. Even if not contemplating a project from the subject covered, there are always many tips and ideas for your own work.

BRANCH REPORTS
HAMILTON:
Our meetings are held at St. Margaret's Anglican Church.
At the beginning of the year, Ruth Haig led the group through a proper pattern for a "one piece wallet". Last November, Madeleine Mitchell came to our guild and presented a workshop on mask making. The day was a lot of fun with different faces appearing on the leather masks we wre making. There were people from the different guilds there. At Christmas, we had our pot luck dinner and later on Betsy Rennie showed the group how to make a Christmas ornament, using the moulded method over a piece of wood. Anna Kowalchuk became a new member of our branch at this meeting.
1997 brought us a workshop on making desk pads in January and February led by Ruth Haig. Guests attending these workshops were Madeleine Mitchell and Nancy Durham (Woodstock), Joyce Scruton (Mississauga) and Allan Foss (Toronto). We also had a prospective member, Mrs. Corbin, and also Fred Wilkinson, who had been a member 2 years ago. In March we have our annual reports and Betsy will be showing them, rolled, covered, and baked buttons. In April, Dorothy McPherson will show us how to use scrap leather for jewellery.
On May 10th, David McPherson will do a workshop on a "half circle box with a piano hinge".
Anyone interested in attending can let any of our guild members know and a list of materials will be provided for you.

MISSISSAUGA:
This has been an extremely busy year for the Mississauga Guild. Our leather projects have included a wildlife brooch, a moulded tray, a Christmas tree ornament, filigree work and a stacked leather project. As well as keeping the hands busy, it has been our honour to host the Annual Meeting this year, and a great deal of effort has gone into planning interesting workshops and demonstrations, and we sincerely hope that the event will be quite memorable.
We are also excited about being the first guild to organize the balloting system for the Best Guild Display Award, and hope we have done it in such a way that makes sense and can be carried on in the years to come. Since this award is voted on by all members attending the meeting, we hope it will create some enthusiasm, and at the same time instill more pride in the way in which we display our works.

NORLAND:
We have had a rather slow year, project wise. We did work on belts and welcome signs.
The weather did not co-operate with us, and a couple of our meeting dates were missed. The meetings are rotated among the members, with workshops held at Hilda Chynoweth's.
Next fall, all members will be put to work getting plans put into action for the '98 Convention.

TORONTO:
The Toronto Branch report always seems to be a difficult subject to describe. Analyzing the reason comes down to subjecting the members to some scrutiny and therin lies the answer. We have a painter, seamstress, producer, banker, revenuer, consultant, several socializers, a retired accounting type, former ambulance attendent, and a couple of ex cops. A varied group with an even more varied interest in leather could not be found and I even left out a grandmother who left us last year and joined Mississauga Branch. She couldn't

take it any more.
The only common interests seem to be the love of the smell of leather and a liking for coffee and donuts. Sounds impossible, but we do hang in there and make a very large variety of leather products. I'll leave that for next year's report, but we are learning new tricks and we do have fun.

WOODSTOCK:
Woodstock Branch CSCL meets the third Thursday each month from September to May, with a potluck picnic and planning meeting in June. Meetings are held at members homes (this May, we are travelling all the way to Sarnia) and demonstrations are usually handled by the hosting member. This year we covered projects to include: one piece wallets, removeable book covers, picture frames, (standing and folding), dyes and finishes, leather mache and moulded masks, and a rope edge belt (at our May meeting).
We held a Christmas pot luck dinner hosted by Beula Reynolds. In February we held our election of officers. The slate of officers stayed the same.
A couple of our members, Madeleine Mitchell and Nancy Durham, attended Hamilton's January and February meetings for instruction on making desk pads by Ruth Haig, FCSCL. and Muriel McKnight. It was very worthwhile, regardless of the weather!

EDITOR'S REPORT:
We enjoyed our two-year term as editors of Canadian Leathercraft. Eight issues of Canadian Leathercraft were published and mailed out - four each year. During our tenure, two regular columns were added: The Beveled Edge and Al's Adult Videos.
To increase submissions, we introduced a $25 Canadian Leathercraft draw in 1995. The name of the lucky recipient was drawn from submissions that included news, tips, reports, and technical articles. The 1996 winner was Rene Hackstetter.
There was no volume XLV. Since volume I started in 1951. volume XLVI should have started in 1996. So, we adjusted the volume number of Canadian Leathercraft with the fall issue in 1996. It became voulme XLVI number 1.

The Fellows are disappointed that more members are not applying for their higher standings in the Society. General members are encouraged to put their skills to work and apply for Associate standing. There are also a number of Associates, who should be obtaining their Fellow membership. Don't wait. Do it now!
TEACHING STANDARDS:
The Teaching Standards were revised in 1989 and reprinted in 1990. Associates can obtain a class "B" teaching certificate and Fellows, a class "A" certificate.
