What is the CSCL?
CSCL stands for The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft.
✓ It is a non-profit voluntarily staffed educational service for leathercrafters.
✓ Amateur and professional crafters organized it in 1950.
✓ Membership includes crafters from coast to coast in Canada and the United States.
✓ It helps keep the knowledge of leathercraft methods and techniques alive.
Who should join?
Anyone interested in leathercraft regardless of experience.
What are the Chief Objectives of the Society?
→ To encourage originality in design.
→ To establish high standards of craftsmanship by improved standards in teaching and judging.
→ To advance education in the craft.
→ To organize exhibitions and sales.
→ To encourage members to participate in art and handicrafts exhibitions.
→ To cooperate with other societies in furthering the creative arts.
→ To identify the creative work of its members and to discourage the plagiarizing thereof.
What are the benefits of joining the CSCL?
The Society serves its membership in many ways.
Beginner students may consult Fellow and Associate members who are experts in the craft for assistance and information.
Crafters may learn the latest developments in the field and find out what other crafters are doing to expand the possibilities of working with leather.
The Society does not conduct classes, but can recommend members to competently conduct group and private classes. The CSCL does, from time to time, hold workshops for CSCL Members, check our web site.
Try for your Associate and Fellows levels see information about these levels on our web site.
Revised May 2016
Individuals and groups of crafters, tanners, manufacturers, leathercraft instructors, supply houses, professional studios - - all share in the program of giving and receiving help through CSCL, the CSCL branches also hold workshops and invite CSCL members from other locations to attend. This not only helps members learn new techniques but also enables them to meet other people with the same interests to network with.
Larmour Memorial Library of Leather Craft Books and DVDs are available to the Branches and Members-at-Large.
Please visit our web site to see the listing of what is available from the Larmour Memorial Library under the Gallery section CSCL Library of Books and Patterns.
Canadian Leathercraft Newsletter
The Society’s illustrated quarterly newsletter is offered to all members:
- Technical articles on leathercraft subjects not always found in books are described.
- News of exhibitions, competitions, local group activities and special individual achievements are reported.
- Book reviews on books from the CSCL library
- Illustrated workshop tips for beginners, teachers and experienced crafts people.
Exhibitions
- The Annual General Meeting of the CSCL is held every spring and takes the form of a weekend package with demonstrations, workshops, critiques, new ideas, branch competition and exhibits, individual competitions, and a great opportunity to meet and learn from other crafters.
- The Biennial Exhibition of juried leatherwork is held every two years in various centers in Southern Ontario and awards can be won.
- Similar events and exhibitions throughout the year are supported by the CSCL.
Inclusion of your work in these exhibitions raises your status as a leathercraft person and offers wide public attention to your work.
