Leather ’74 — exhibition catalogue, Toronto Public Libraries
The exhibit list runs in three columns — craftsman, article, price — with one number to each article, so a craftsman named once carries every entry beneath the name. It is set out that way here. Item 14 is priced twice, “7.00 and 12.00”, as the sheet has it; item 30 was given no price at all; and item 32’s typed “25.00” has been struck out in ink and “NFS” written beside it, both of which are kept. An “x” in the right margin marks an article that could be ordered.

The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft was founded in 1950 to provide guidance in improving the
quality of leathercraft in Canada and in creating original design. Membership for the past year was 206
including members from coast to coast in Canada and several members from U. S. A. The Society encourages
the formation of local branch guilds anywhere in Canada. At present Branches exist in Barrie, Belleville,
Hamilton, Toronto and Woodstock. The branch competition for the Weston Trophy is a major event at the
Annual Meeting. A graded system of membership gives the general members an opportunity to become
Associates and later Fellows. The Council of Fellows judge the work for sales, exhibitions and
competitions. Members receive a quarterly bulletin called Canadian Leathercraft. C.S.C.L. is
affiliated with the Canadian Guild of Crafts and the Ontario Craft Foundation. Since 1964 C.S.C.L. has
participated in the Arts, Crafts and Hobbies Show at the C.N.E. with an exhibition, sales and
demonstrations.
The chief objectives of the society are: -to improve the status of leathercraft by raising
standards of design and craftsmanship. -to help anyone interested in any phase of the craft. -to raise
standards of teaching and judging. -to conduct sales and exhibitions. -to co-operate with the other
services in furthering the crafts. -to supply teachers, demonstrators and adjudicators upon request.
New
members in the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft are always welcome.
