PRESIDENT'S REPORT
I wish to welcome the members and guests to the 25th Annual meeting of the
Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft. Your attention is directed to the minutes of the 24th meeting held in Belleville and to the reports of the various officers and committee chairmen. The
reports give a full report of Society activities, however, there were events during 1974-75 which
were not covered by committee reports, Ten of our members attended the Annual Meeting of Canadian
Guild of Crafts (Ontario). C.S.C.L. members also contributed a number of leather articles which were
exhibited for the month of April 1974 at Canada Life Place, the setting for this meeting. The World
Craft Council conference "In Praise of Hands" was attended by ten of our members. Held at York
University, the many facets of the world of crafts were enjoyed by all who attended. Daphne Lingwood
provided the only demonstration featuring leatherwork, which we all made sure to attend. Canada and
the working committees responsible are to be congratulated on a most interesting week. Mrs. M. E.
Hogg, is Vice-President, North America. Two delegates from C.S.C.L. - attended the C.G. of
C.(Ontario) Affiliates week-end conference held at Georgian College, Barrie, Jan. 31st. and Feb. 1st,
1975. Theme "Future of the Guild". Report of this conference and articles on the Affiliate members
will appear in the April-May issue of Craft Dimensions. A copy is to be sent to all our members.
Forty-five of our members took advantage of the $1.00 membership in the Ontario Craft Foundation,
which entitled them to receive the "Craft Ontario" magazine.
Our membership reached 211 for 1974-75.
There were six executive council meetings held--attendance averaged 18,. The Branches met monthly
from October to June with many aspects of leathercraft being demonstrated and experiments tried. The
Larmour Memorial Library is presently being catalogued and.will be circulated shortly. Again death
has taken some of our members--Mrs. Reta Lamour, HLFCSCL, our Honourary President, and Mr. Sandy
Coutts, a member of executive council. There have been others in the Branches I am sure, but unless
you let us know sometimes we miss hearing of members who have left us in death.

President's Report - continued
We have enjoyed an exceptionally active year and I wish to thank
the Officers and Executive Council members; the various Chairmen and their committees for their
co-operation and support of C.S.C.L. Some of who have been called upon to carry very heavy work
loads. The successful programs we have produced occurred only because everyone worked together. THANK
YOU, one and all. Respectfully submitted Helen M. Wheaton, President. After Election This will be the
last time I will speak to you as your President. It has been my pleasure to serve you on the many
occasions happening in the past three years, and now on the Occasion of the 25th Annual Meeting. It
is certainly amazing when one realizes our Society not only has survived 25 years--but is a growing
organization, as the membership shows. Our constitution is sound. God willing we may be around
another 25 years. Alleluia: A-men. As to the Future - The Society will be in capable hands and I have
only good wishes for my successor and ask that you give May Corbett and her executive the same
willing support you have given me.. Retiring President Helen M. Wheaton.

VICE-PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Your Vice-President in charge of Branches is appointed to act as a
liaison between executive council and branch members. There has been no call on this service for
several years. The purpose of this office is to offer a friendly exchange. May we help you?
Respectfully submitted Beula Reynolds Vice-President/Branches LIBRARY COMMITTEE REPORT
This committee
was first set up in May of 1971, when the tools and books owned by Ralph and Reta Larmour were
donated to C.S.C.L. It was felt the books would form the basis of a permanent Library, which has now
been named "The Larmour Memorial Library". The tools and Leather were sold at auction on three
different occasions to Fellows and Associates being finalized at the Annual Meeting in Belleville.
The result of the auctions produced an amount of $1,080.00, which has been in a separate bank
account, in trust, administered by the committee. These funds are to be spent in maintaining the
library. A stamp was bought and each book is stamped 'property of C.S.C.L." and "Larmour Memorial
Library". A proper Library code has been set up and proper circulating library boxes have been
purchased. As time goes by new books will be added to the present list. Respectfully submitted Fred
Brown Chairman.

EDITORIAL REPORT
Another year has gone by and we are still struggling to obtain enough material to print "Canadian Leathercraft" four times a year.
We would like to thank the members who have co-operated in the past by sending in articles. We still need technical articles, lots of them. It is our aim to print a technical article in each edition but sometimes this is impossible to do.
Thanks again and hope for a bigger and better year coming up.
Respectfully submitted,
Joy Hutcheson.

EXHIBITIONS
It is with pride that we look back to the third major exhibition of the Canadian Society for
Creative Leathercraft which was held in the _
Forest Hill Library, Learning Resources Centre, 666 Eglinton
Ave. W., Toronto, from June 3rd to June 28th in 1974. We were honoured to have Mr. Robert Secord from the
Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services officially open Leather '74 on June 8th. In spite of
extreme heat that evening, the attendance was excellent, There were 92 articles of leather entered by 33
people in Leather '74. Of these, 68 pieces were on display. The judges, Mr. Robert
--Muma and Mr. Paul
Bennett awarded the four prizes to Itsuko Yasui, Daphne Lingwood, Anne Hook and Irva Ford. Six craftsmen
received Honourable Mention: Clara Cavanagh, Daphne Lingwood, Rex Lingwood, Jessie Little, David Trotter
and Paul Williams. Our Society acquired seven new members as a result of the Exhibition. Four articles
were sold.
Many visitors viewed our show and Mrs. Helen Judkins from Pointe Claire, Quebec and Mrs. Page
from Thornhill Library, Toronto, both asked for an exhibition of Leather to be forwarded to them. These
exhibitions were both extremely well received and the reviews in the papers were most encouraging. The
Annual meeting of C.S.C.L. in Belleville had an attendance of 95 including 4 visitors. Over 300 articles
of leatherwork were. displayed., The exhibition and sale of leather at the C.N.E. under chairman Robert
Sutton was again a success. Thirty-four members sent 1,584 articles for sale. Total sales were $4,892.30.
Choice articles, not for sale, were on exhibition in the wall cases. Our sincere thanks goes to Robert
Sutton, his assistant Gladys Riddell, and members who worked at the sale. A few of our members entered the
Canadian Guild of Crafts juried exhibition at the C.N.E. Anne Hook was presented with the F.W. Woolworth
award for "Best Leather", DaphneLingwood won the Tandy Leather Co. Award for Decorated Leather, and Rex
Lingwood received the C.S.C.L. Award for Best Functional Design. In the Women's Division competition at
the C.N.E. several C.S.C.L. members won prizes. Jessie Little was the winner of the Chatelaine Award for
Best Leatherwork.

the World Crafts Conference, the Canadian Guild of Crafts had a "Master Craftsmen's" Exhibition at York
University Art Gallery. Paul and Beverley Williams, Daphne and Rex Lingwood and Irva Ford had 2 articles
each on display. At the Science Centre, where the exhibition "In Show of Hands" was shown, Daphne, Rex and

TORONTO BRANCH ANNUAL REPORT 1974-75
This year has been a very active one for the Toronto Branch, with average meeting attendance of 22.
In early summer, 1974, an executive group of senior citizens from this Branch was formed, and a New Horizons Federal Government grant was applied for and approved by early autumn. The funds applied for were for the purchase of an electric typewriter, a duplicating machine, and stationery....this for the use of recording copies of all lectures for the members, and methods demonstrated, so that various techniques of leathercraft would be kept available for leathercrafters in future years. As well as this office equipment, there was a funding of $1,000.00 allowed for the purchase of leather in large quantities, this to allow the members to purchase good leather from the society at close to wholesale prices, this fund to be constantly replenished by the purchase funds, by charging slightly more than the purchase price..this is already in operation, and seems to be working quite favourable.
Our meetings have been run this year not so much as demonstrations, but rather as workshops-in-miniature, with many of the members working along with the demonstrator to improve their skills.
The October meeting was devoted to discussing the types of leathers to be purchased with the new grant, and then the November meeting was a workshop on wax-dyeing, and string dyeing, presented by Kay Cloughly. The December meeting was on the subject of resist-dyeing, and decorative design, by Mary Patterson, followed by the gentlemen of the club providing us all with a Christmas-party refreshment table of monumental proportions.
January's meeting took the form of a workshop on woven wallet making, capably done by our President, Gladys Riddell, and in February, Jessie Little had everyone in a colourful mood with a mini-workshop on dry brush dyeing technique, and a general discussion on dyes.
Yet to come are the following:
March - Bob Sutton demonstrating saddle-stitching and thread making,
April - Fred Brown ensnaring us all with methods of lacing,
May - R. Potter demonstrating the art of book cover repair.
June has been set aside for a reunion of all past and present Toronto Branch members.
Following each meeting there have been refreshments served.

of. each month at Springbank School, Woodstock. During the C.S.C.L. year 10 regular meetings were held
with an average attendance of 11 members. Workshops and demonstrations followed each business session.
These included macrame knotting, mystery and Mexican braiding, bottle covering, leather molding,
lampshade making and soft handbag framing. Demonstrators and instructors included: Carol McLean, Nora
Huyck, Beula Reynolds, Edith Melchoir and Hilda Darbyshire. As many members as possible participated in
the sessions at the C.N.E. unfortunately illness of key members prevented participation in the Galt
Craft Fair this year.
Highlight of the year was a workshop led by Pat Hart of Georgian College, who gave
an excellent presentation on Design. We enjoyed our Summer Barbecue and Christmas get~-to-gathers, and
look forward to a busy and rewarding 1975-76 year with C.S.C.L. Respectfully submitted si Hilda
