The awards the Society gave, as its own newsletter defined them, with the members the competition records show receiving them. Where the records name no recipient, none is invented here. Shown here in alphabetical order, split across 9 pages so each stays a reasonable size to load.

Zalitis Pin

Awarded for the new Associate with the highest marks of the year.

Given to the new Associate with the highest overall percentage on their successful Associate Status Exam, which consists of four pieces judged by the Fellows. The pin was the gift of a member and the archive can now date it. Janis Zalitis of the Toronto Branch - Associate 1959, Fellow 1962, born in Latvia - had given it by 1969: “In recent years Janis has proven his interest in promoting leathercraft by donating a sterling silver pin (in the shape of our insignia) to the member who obtains the highest marks of those who try for their Associate standing. The pins are made by one of his Latvian friends.” (Spring 1974, page 7.) The earliest presentation the archive holds is to Mrs. Muriel McKnight of Hamilton, at the Nineteenth Annual C.S.C.L. Meeting in 1969 (1969-spring p1): "The Janis Zalitis pin presented to the Associate with the highest marks was presented to Mrs. McKnight by Mrs. Ann Hook." Two years earlier the newsletter records a gift of the same kind from the same man under another name — "The Centennial pin was donated by Janis Zalitis to be awarded to the Associate with the highest points this year", won by Mrs. Margaret Weldon (1967-spring-no3 p2) — and whether that pin and this one are the same gift the papers do not say. The next presentation the archive holds is to Carol McLean of Woodstock, at the 20th Annual Meeting of 3-5 April 1970 (1970-spring p3): "This year's winner of this coveted award was Carol McLean of Woodstock." The 1982 presentation to Gertrude Hilder was made by Helen Wheaton, Chairman of the Council of Fellows, who called it "an encouragement to members to try for Associate standing". A note on the spelling: the man's name is printed Zalitis wherever the bulletins name him, including his own profile, and the pin is printed Zalitis in Summer 1974, Summer 1982 and Summer 1997. The Society's modern documents spell the award Zelaitis. This edition uses Zalitis, the spelling of the donor's own name in every bulletin that names him; the discrepancy is the Society's own and is recorded rather than resolved.

Recorded recipients

Definitions transcribed from the award tables printed in the Canadian Leathercraft. Recipients taken from the Society’s competition records. Some awards were recorded under a shorthand name in one source and a formal name in the other; where the newsletter’s own definition makes the pair unambiguous they are shown here under the formal name.
