Recorded recipients

  • Daphne Lingwood 1974 Pendant — prize given by Tandy Leather Co. of Canada Ltd.

Robert Muma Award

Awarded for best tooling or colour work.

For the best tooling or colour work awarded at the Annual. The amount given for this award is $50.00 and is paid from the CSCL General funds.

Recorded recipients

Salon Award

Awarded for a further-judged piece, unique or outstanding, at the Society's annual Council of Fellows meeting.

A smaller, further-judged set of the pieces passed for the Craftsman Award, for a unique or outstanding piece. Printed under this name from 1967 (`1967-fall`) through 1992 (`1992-summer p3`). The Society also printed the name "Salon Ribbon" for the same kind of judging from 1978 onward, and the two names overlap for over a decade rather than one cleanly replacing the other at any single date; each year's own printed name is kept exactly as printed rather than folded into one.

Recorded recipients

Salon Ribbon

Awarded for unique, original or outstanding idea or work.

Not to be confused with the International Assembly Salon Ribbon, which the International Assembly of Leathercraftsmen gave at its own gatherings. Salon Ribbon is given at the Annual for articles displayed at the Annual Convention. The Fellows judge the pieces at the Annual for their unique, original or outstanding idea or work. There is no monetary award for these awards. The pieces must have been made in the last year and not have been shown in any other Annual to qualify.

Recorded recipients

Salon Ribbon Honourable Mention

Awarded for an honourable mention noted as a parenthetical against another Salon ribbon, not a separate main ribbon.

Printed as a parenthetical against Amy Kenny's Belt ribbon in the 61st Annual's Salon Ribbons list: "AMY KENNY BELT (HONOURABLE MENTION WRIST BAND)" — not counted in the page's own "16 RIBBONS TO 15 MEMBERS" Salon total.

Second CNE Hobby and Homecraft Show Public Preference Poll, Large Articles

Awarded for the most popular large article, by visitor vote.

At the Second Canadian International Hobby and Homecraft Show (Coliseum, CNE Grounds, Toronto, February 5–13, 1954), the Society exhibited over 100 members' work, and visiting spectators voted in a Public Preference Poll on the pieces on display, split into Large and Small Articles. The Large Articles poll was topped by Don MacKinnon's carved chest, which “also polled the highest number of votes” of the whole exhibit.

Recorded recipients

  • Don MacKinnon 1954 First — Carved chest — also the piece polling the highest number of votes overall in the Public Preference Poll
  • Don MacKinnon 1954 Second — Carved brief case
  • Don MacKinnon 1954 Third — Carved overnight case
  • Reta Larmour 1954 Fourth — Footstool with carved top

Second CNE Hobby and Homecraft Show Public Preference Poll, Small Articles

Awarded for the most popular small article, by visitor vote.

The Small Articles poll was topped by Edith Roscoe's “Pine Cone” photo folder.

Shoe and Leather Fair Public Preference Poll

Awarded for the exhibit visitors voted their favourite, drawn from the ballot slips.

Awarded at the Canadian Shoe and Leather Fair (Automotive Building, CNE grounds, Toronto, October 1952). Begun that year as an experiment, “the great variety of expressed preferences for individual articles suggested to the Committee that a public preference poll might be interesting and informative”: each visitor answered “I like Article No... best” on a slip, with a donated Dogwood Shoulder Bag drawn from the ballots as an added inducement — over 1,500 people had voted by the close, and the first winner, drawn by “Miss Footwear,” was Bill Hurst, a Toronto pianist.

Recorded recipients

Shoe and Leather Fair Public Preference Poll, 2nd place (tied)

Awarded for the exhibit placing second in the visitors’ vote (a tie).

  • Deane Russell 1952 Oak Table Lamp with carved panels
  • Lara Russell 1952 Oak Table Lamp with carved panels
  • Robert Muma 1952 "Music of the Masters" (large bound book, tooled, modelled and embossed)

Special Award

Awarded for service recognition, not a judged piece — one committee member honoured for volunteering, not for an exhibited work.

At the 1994 Bi-Ennial Exhibition, convenor Thelma Amos presented Fred Brown with this award "for being a friend and a volunteer on the committee since 1982," describing him as an authority on colour and dye work for the committee. Not tied to any entered piece.

Recorded recipients

Special Commendation

Awarded for novel or whimsical work outside the usual ribbon categories.

A judges' citation given alongside the Craftsman and Salon Ribbons at the 28th Annual, 1978 — Ethel Zimmerman's "Little man," "a bit of whimsy well thought out and (in leather) well carried out." Not seen again in the run so far; it may be a one-off rather than a standing award.

Recorded recipients

Special Table

Awarded for experimental and just-for-fun pieces, not a judged category.

A display table at the Annual set aside for pieces outside the judged classes. The 1973 Annual’s host, announcing it, called it "a special table for our ‘Experiments with Leather’ and ‘Just for Fun’ articles, owing to the favourable response received from our branches" — a place for informal or experimental work, not a competition. The rows on file here are the 1985 Annual’s printed list of "craftsmen who contributed to the Special Table," a contributor list rather than a placing or a prize.

Leatherwork Award to be presented at the June 28... opening of the Ontario Crafts Council exhibition ONTARIO CRAFTS 95" — a province-wide juried exhibition (39 of 276 submitted pieces selected; fifteen awards totalling over $3,500), not a CSCL event.

Recorded recipients

Western Fair

Awarded for first place in a leather class at the Western Fair, London, Ontario.

The Western Fair at London, Ontario ran a handicraft competition in which leather had its own sections, numbered 97 to 105 in 1963: gloves, four classes of handbag divided by original or commercial design and by tooling or carving, two classes of belt, and miscellaneous small and large articles. First, second and third prizes were given in each, with prize money — the 1962 report prints the scale, $6.00, $5.00 and $4.00 for the handbag classes — though the 1963 report notes that the first four classes drew too few entries to award all the money that was available. The department was supervised by Helen Wheaton of the Society's London Branch, who wrote the report the newsletter printed. The Fair was open beyond the Society and beyond Canada: the 1963 leather sections drew entries from Chatham and from San Diego, California, and the page names no entrant's guild, so no winner here should be taken for a member of the Society unless the archive says so elsewhere. The archive holds three of these reports — the Fairs of 1962, 1963 and 1964. The section numbers moved every year, so a class is safer to identify by its wording than by its number: in 1962 the carved original Canadian handbag was Section 99, in 1963 Section 98, and in 1964 the whole leather department was renumbered 92 to 100. 1962 drew entries in only five of the nine sections and 1964 in eight, Section 94 (the tooled original Canadian handbag) drawing none and Section 95 only one entrant. The 1964 report differs from the two before it in one further way: it prints no prize money and gives no entrant's town except J. D. Hunter's, of Stoney Mt., Manitoba, so the 1964 records carry a town for him alone. A decade later the format changed entirely: the 1974 report opens by saying that in 1973 the Fair “changed its whole format for Arts and Crafts, cutting to the bone the many, many sections, down to two in each media, one large, one small” — Class 68 held only “Small Article” (Section 11) and “Large Article” (Section 12), still supervised by Helen Wheaton, still carrying first, second and third prizes with money, and still open beyond the Society: the 1974 Large Article third prize went to Roy D. Nulph of Salt Lake City, Utah. The 1976 report gives the same two classes again — Small Article and Large Article — this time naming each entrant's town instead of prize money, and adds the archive's first Western Fair Honourable Mention, to Anne Hook of Toronto.

Weston Trophy

Awarded for Carving, molding, finishing, colouring, lacing, whatever each piece entails.

Awarded at the Annual meeting. This is a branch award. The number of pieces is reviewed each year at the annual. It is judged prior to the Annual on a minimum of 4 pieces submitted by 4 members of a competing branch unless the number is changed. It is judged for all aspects of leather crafting. Carving, molding, finishing, colouring, lacing, whatever each piece entails. The critique is read at the annual during the general meeting and the Weston Trophy is presented to the winning branch. Each winning entrant receives a ribbon.

This is a branch award, so its recipients are branches rather than individual members and are not listed here. The Weston Trophy page carries every branch that won it, in all 62 years decided from 1957 to 2021, with the history of the trophy and the rules of entry. The individual pieces that made up a winning or runner-up entry are recorded under Weston Trophy Winning Piece and Weston Trophy Entry (runner-up).

Weston Trophy Entry (runner-up)

Awarded for one of the individual pieces from a branch's Weston Trophy entry that did not win that year.

See "Weston Trophy" for the competition itself. The 53rd Annual (2003) newsletter prints the runner-up branch's entry alongside the winning one ("Weston Trophy Winning Piece"): Madeleine Mitchell (Soft Leather Bag), Jean Pickering (Passport Wallet), David McPherson (Red Clock, also printed "Stylized Gear Clock"), Loreen Manuel (Pencil Cup).

Weston Trophy Winning Piece

Awarded for one of the individual pieces making up the winning branch's Weston Trophy entry.

This entry records the individual pieces of the winning branch's entry across three years: the 43rd Annual (1993; the issue prints "The 44th Annual", and the Summer 1992 newsletter had looked ahead to "Norland with their 43rd Annual Meeting") — David Windeyer (Magnifying Glass Case), Muriel McKnight (Hinged Box, also printed "Pink Lasted Box"), David McPherson (Oval Moulded Box, also printed "Brown Box"), Sharon Beasley (3 Piece Desk Set), Ruth Haig (5-Strand Braided Belt, sketch page prints "8 Strand Braid"); the 52nd Annual (2002) — Beula Reynolds (Photo Binder), Loreen Manuel (Bookends), Heather Atkinson (Pen Stand), Madeleine Mitchell (Round Box); the 53rd Annual (2003) — Sean Dalgetty (Hinged Box), Peter Grove (Decorator Cushion with Carving).
