Certification

  • Associate of the CSCL 2018
  • Fellow of the CSCL 2019

Named an Associate in 2018 and a Fellow in 2019, he served the Society on its Workshops committee from 2019 to 2022, and his work has won Craftsman and Salon Ribbons and the Best General Member award. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he spent his youth there before emigrating to Winnipeg with his parents. Boy Scouts first put leatherwork in his hands, and his college training in dental technology — fine tools for fine dental appliances — carried over into fine carving and tooling, and later into casting the silver conchos he made for his own saddle. He moved his wife and three children to Calgary to open his own business, then chose to live out of town on a ranch in the foothills, with goats and horses. At the Fellowship judging in Hamilton before the 2019 Annual he was asked for four pieces and brought a suitcase of more than ten — a fully rigged and decorated Western saddle, a set of longhorns with decorated mounts, a vest, chaps, spurs and straps, belts, purses and clutch wallets, and a stool seat — and let the Fellows choose among them; he scored 94.5%, his pieces mostly in Western floral carving and stamping. His work spans braiding, whipmaking, box construction, lacing, engraving, toolmaking, lost-wax casting and bone and antler carving. Earlier, he entered a wallet for the Hamilton branch in the 2012 Weston Trophy competition, where the judges found the adaptation of a manufactured interior interesting, some irregularity in the lacing, and carving that “shows fine detailed work”; Mississauga took the trophy that year, averaging 80.4 per cent to Hamilton's 72.8. The Society prints his name two other ways, both kept where they are printed: “Leslie Pinter” on the 2014 ribbon lists, and “Lester Pinder” in the Spring 2019 report of his Fellowship.
