Leather ’82 — exhibition catalogue, Brampton Public Library and Art Gallery

The exhibit list runs in three columns — craftsman, article, sale price — and repeats a craftsman’s name with ditto marks down the entries beneath it; it is set out that way here, and the catalogue’s own note on what the asterisks mean is kept with it. Entry 46 gives Muriel McKnight’s surname as “McKinght”, which is how the sheet prints it.

The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft was founded in 1950 to provide guidance in improving the
quality of leathercraft in Canada and in creating original designs. Membership now averages 225,
including members from coast to coast, and a number of members in the U.S.A. The Society encourages the
formation of local branches anywhere in Canada. At present, branches exist in Barrie, Belleville,
Hamilton, Norland, Toronto and Woodstock. Those not able to attend a local branch because of distance
join as members-at-large. The branch competition for the Weston Trophy is a major event at the Annual
Meeting. A graded system of membership gives the general members an opportunity to become Associates, and
then later Fellows of the Society. The Council of Fellows judge the work for sales, exhibitions and
competitions. Members receive a quarterly bulletin called Canadian Leathercraft.

C.S.C.L. is affiliated
with the Ontario Craft Council. Since 1964, C.S.C.L. has participated in the Arts, Crafts and Hobbies
Show at the C.N.E. with an exhibition of work, sales, and demonstrations by the members.

The chief
objectives of the Society are: -to improve the status of leathercraft by raising the standards of design
and craftsmanship -to help anyone interested in any phase of the work -to raise standards of teaching and
judging -to conduct sales and exhibitions -to co-operate with the other services in furthering the
crafts.: -to supply teachers, demonstrators and adjudicators upon request.

New members in the Canadian
Society for Creative Leathercraft are always welcome. Further information may be obtained by contacting
those listed in this Show Catalogue.
