PRESIDENT'S REPORT:

Welcome all, to this our 32nd C.S.C.L. Annual. Let us sincerely hope we
may have many more. As usual, during the past year, we have lost some valued members, but again we
have new members coming in to carry on for those who have left us. In the Hamilton Branch we are truly
going to miss Frank Torry, and Toronto will miss Dave Elliott, to mention a few,

I would like to thank
my executive for the help they have given me in the past two years, and I know each and every one will
help the future President.

We held six executive meetings, one at Harbourfront, Toronto, one at the
John Howard Society, Hamilton, and four at St.Martin's in the Field Church, Toronto. All meetings were
well attended with the usual large amount of business looked after each time. There is concern for our
dwindling membership, but the Fellows felt it was better to keep an excellent grade of work with a few
concerned members rather than not such a good grade of work with a larger membership.

As affiliate
representative, I attended an excellent combined Communications weekend and Annual Dinner. The
information gathered will not soon be forgotten, especially due to the Annual dinner evening being
joined by the Native People. Among other things we learned much of their folk lore and some of their
customs. The workshops during the weekend were especially informative. Randy Brinkman, who conducted
the workshop on Photography, will be conducting the workshop for us on May 29, 1982 at St.Martin's in
the Field, Toronto. We are looking for lots of you to attend, and the cost to you is only $5.00.
Please attend if at all possible. As well as attending the Communications weekend, I went to three
affiliate meetings in Toronto. It is hoped that some of you can attend the Maritime Conference to be
held in Halifax, Fredericton and Charlottetown, as well as the Annual Dinner and Communications
weekend to be held at Hart House in Toronto this year.

The C.N.E. again was a success, but with our
Fred Brown now being pensioned off, it is feared C.S.C.L. will no longer be able to afford the C.N.E.
If you have any ideas where future sales can be held, please contact the executive. We need your
help..

On your behalf I attended the O.C.C. Midwest Region show "Digging for Your Roots" at MacDonald
Stewart Art Centre, Guelph. As usual it was an outstanding show with many unusual pieces. Part of this
will be in the 1982 O.C.C. travelling show. continued..

President's Report continued -

Two workshops were held, one on Sandal Making with Ruben Barrett at
Harbourfront. This was an excellent workshop - now we need to get involved and make our own sandals.
This however would take more than one day. The other workshop was with Estelle Post and her dyes. Our
only comment, "You can't win them all".

Our thanks to our hard working Editors, Fred and Mary
Patterson. The old adage, "it takes a busy person to get things done" certainly fits in this case.
Thanks to both of you.

Don't forget Leather '82 to be held at Bramalea Art Gallery, July 1st to July
31st, 1982. Judging date June 4th. Please get your pieces made - we want an excellent showing. Don't
let the Society down.

Again thank you all for your help during my term as President.

Respectfully
submitted,

Hope C. Drysdale,
President.

MINUTES OF THE 31st ANNUAL MEETING, May 2nd, at the Beacon Motor Hotel:

The meeting was called to
order by President Hope C. Drysdale at 10:00 a.m. After a short welcome she called on Lorna Robson,
our Host President, to officially welcome one and all to the Beacon Motor Hotel.

It was moved by Helen
Wheaton and seconded by Jack Meharg that the minutes of the 1981 Annual meeting found on Page 4 of the
Annual Report be adopted as circulated. Carried.

A motion that all reports be adopted as circulated
was moved by Ruth Haig and seconded by May Corbett. Carried.

The President's remarks were read from
the Annual Report.

Correspondence was read as follows: Information on the P.E.I. Summer Art 1981 at
Holland College, Charlottetown; the Canadian Biennial of Enamel at Laval College, Quebec.

Announcements: The Executive has been looking into purchasing C.S.C.L. pins. However after a show of
hands it was decided they would be too costly. Past Bulletins are on sale and can be purchased from
Hilda Newitt. A Workshop on sandals will be held at Harbourfront on May 23rd, 1981. The C.N.E.
schedule is on hand, to be filled out for times available for work. Draw tickets are available, and
draws will be made during the day.

The presentation of Leather '80 award ribbons was made by Helen
Wheaton, assisted by Beula Reynolds, as follows: Ontario Craft Council Award - Jean Hunter Michigan

-5- MINUTES continued - The President then welcomed the new executive, and their first meeting will be
held at Harbourfront on May 22, 1981.

Jack Meharg, 2 to Carol McLean, Jean Pickering, and 2 to Gladys Riddell.

It was announced that the
reason Walter Mickey was not at this Annual was because he was in hospital having open heart surgery.
We all wish him well. Representation of Branches: Barrie 10, Belleville 4, Hamilton 19, Norland 5,
Toronto 18, Woodstock 7, Canada at large 4, U.S.A. at large 5.

Our guest speakers, Mr. and Mrs.
McKeever, gave an interesting talk and showed slides on Owls, explaining the work at their Owl
Rehabilitation Centre. What gorgeous creatures! How wonderful nature is. The sale of materials was
conducted, and then many of our members left for home. For those that stayed for-the Sunday morning
presentation a special treat was in store: Gordon Barnes and Mary Clark showed most outstanding slides
of the World Craft Council meeting in Vienna. The slides were exceptional as Gordon is "One Great
Photographer". I believe we all could have looked at many more had he brought them with him. They were
certainly worth staying over to see. Respectfully submitted, June Somerville..

The 1981 Annual Meeting of thé Council of Fellows was held on April 19,1981,
at the home of Dorothy and Bob Muma, 118 Haxelton Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. Seven Fellows were
present. Chairman, Helen Wheaton presided. The minutes were recorded by Carol McLean, Secretary.
Weston Trophy: Four Branches competed. Commentaries made. Barrie Branch won with 85.5% Associates - No
applications were received. Fellows - One application was received. Our requirements were met. Mrs.
Jean Hunter was successful in attaining Fellow standing. Following lunch a business meeting was held
at which various matters pertaining to the Council were discussed and motions made. The meeting
adjourned at 4 p.m. Meeting of May 1st, 1981, held in the Wheaton room at the motel, for the purpose
of clarifying the basis of judging for Salon and Craftsman Ribbons. Upon agreement, judging proceeded
at 9:30 to 12:30. Salon ribbons awarded: 2; Craftsman Ribbons awarded: 20. Respectfully submitted
Helen Wheaton, Chairman of Council of Fellows. The Associates, present at the Annual Meeting, met
immediately after lunch 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. May 2nd, 1981. Each one was asked to record their name and
the area in which they felt they lacked skill. Synopsis of the result revealed:
4 persons requested Construction
4 " " Colouring
3 " " Creativity, ideation
3 " " Design
2 " " Time

It was thought day-long workshops,
exclusively for Associate members might be arranged. Each Branch intimated they could provide
facilities in their area to hold meetings. Submitted by Helen Wheaton, Chairman of Council of Fellows,

Council of Fellows continued -

The Branch Presidents met for breakfast on May 3rd, 1981. All Branches
were represented, The need for qualified teachers was expressed. The question - "How do you get
members out to meetings when the programs are good?", Any suggestions?

Discussion regarding pay
schedules for demonstrators at meetings and workshops.* Should this be upgraded or left the same?
Should branches up the anti when gas prices have increased? It was suggested that branch presidents
hold mini meetings during the Executive Council meetings.

Submitted by Helen Wheaton, Chairman of
Council of Fellows. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:

No new books have been added to the boxes at the time this
report was prepared. It had been previously decided by the Library Committee that additional books
would be obtained to augment the smallest of the library units. Your librarian regrets that it has not
been possible for her to accomplish this as yet, nor to obtain the boxes to house this unit. Hopefully
this will be done in June, so that the Branch receiving the lesser unit will have extra books for the
summer months.

Thanks to May Corbett, who contributed a couple of books on carving. One of these will
replace a lost volume. We have been fortunate in having lost so few books. However, there are some
missing volumes. A list will appear in a bulletin in the near future. If you find one lurking on your
shelves, please mail it to me and I will see that it gets back to the right box.

EDITORIAL REPORT:

The Editor's job is made extremely simple by the excellent co-operation of
both the Branch members AND the Members-at-large. We were particularly pleased with the co-op effort
of Norland Branch and the members-at-large, resulting in a splendid Summer issue this year, and we
might suggest that this combination remain together for the next time around, Quality articles have
been received covering special projects, book reviews, etc., and we are hopeful that we may receive
more short "workshop tips".

As with every other part of the economy, we are caught in the present
inflation spiral, and are attempting to get the best prices for our publication by "shopping around".
However, we are also captive victims of the increased postal rates, an item which will, in the coming
year, increase our mailing costs 100%. In fact, when the Leather '82 mailings are added in, we will
be faced with an INCREASE in postage equal to the total cost of publishing AND mailing "Canadian
Leathercraft" for the whole year 1971!!!

We will attempt to multiple-mail items, and for this reason
we point out our present schedule of mailings so that items can be included. Mailing date for Winter
issue is approx. Feb. 15th, for Spring. April 15th, Summer, Aug. 15, and Fall, Oct. 15th. ( The
Winter and Summer issues are closer together for special "Annual Meeting" information sheets).

Another' money-saver idea is enclosing husband/wife newsletters in one envelope, since the present
postal rates allow more weight to be sent for the same cost. Bulk rates apply only for 10,000 piece
mailings. Could we try and increase our membership to this please?

Without the much appreciated help
of husband Fred, the mailings would be weeks later, as he does nearly ALL the manual work, while I
get the "creative" part....., thanks, CO-Editor Fred!!! Respectfully submitted,

Mary M. Patterson,
Editor, Canadian Leathercraft.

ARCHIVIST'S REPORT:

The past year has been fairly quiet for this position, mainly filing the ussues
of Canadian Leathercraft as they arrive.

A filing cabinet has been put to use, making it quite easy to
keep all in order.

Any inquiries as to past information which might be in the archives could be sent to
me and I will try to search it out for you. Our history - what I have been able to learn so far - is
quite interesting, and perhaps the report another year could include excerpts of it for you (if it would
be of any interest to you). Let me know, and I will be governed accordingly.

Enjoying the past, looking
forward to the future. Respectfully submitted, Carol McLean, Archivist, F.C.S.C.L. MEMBERSHIP REPORT, for

PUBLICITY REPORT:

Letters have been mailed to the following magazines advertising our exhibition, "Leather
'82", July 1st to August 1st, 1982: Artisan, Ontario Craft, Craft News, Make it with Leather, Hands and
Art-I-Fact Regional Arts Council, Hamilton. Pictures from the 1981 Annual meeting have been added to the
C.S.C.L. Photo Album. Continue to promote the C.S.C.L. through your local Guilds. Respectfully submitted,
Muriel McKnight.

CANADIAN NATIONAL EXHIBITION REPORT, 1981:

Twenty-eight people submitted 3,062 articles
of which 2,069 articles were sold for a dollar value of $7,607.63, giving the Society a commission of
$1,536.41. The number of missing articles was high. It was felt that some articles may have been thrown
out in the garbage, since they had been submitted in crunched brown paper bags. At future sales we will
all have to be more careful.

We have had many good years at the C.N.E. It will not be the same with no
C.S.C.L. booth there. Again our sincere thanks to Fred Brown for his help in keeping us there these many
years. At present we are priced out of attending in 1982. Perhaps a miracle will happen.

Hamilton took
honours in leather at the Arts and Crafts competition with Hope Drysdale winning two firsts, Ruth Haig
winning two seconds and Art Morris winning one first and one third. Respectfully submitted,

Hope C.
Drysdale.

* * * BRANCH REPORTS * * *

BARRIE:

Barrie Branch holds workshop style meetings on Saturdays at St.Monica's
Public School, Barrie. Because of illness in the membership, our average attendance has dropped to six
this year. Eight meetings were held and two cancelled because of inclement weather. This year we have
placed the emphasis on "Back to Basics", and to this end have tried to improve our carving skills. The
first two meetings featured a key case and wallet using a floral carved pattern that combines all the
basic carving tools. Other programs gave instruction on Bookends and Ringbinders. Hope Drysdale, C.S.C.L.
Executive President, joined us for the latter.

Our guest demonstrator this year was Carol McLean from
Woodstock, who brought to us her wide knowledge and creative flair for Lino Block Cuts to be used on
leather. Although our branch had tried this technique before, we gained many tips and Carol's delightful
demo left us with new enthusiasm for this simple but seldom used method of leather decoration.

The thrill
of bringing the Weston Trophy back to Barrie following the '81 Annual has lasted all year. We regret that
circumstances have prevented us from entering the competition again this year, however we will strive to
be back in there next year. We held our annual Barrie Branch Christmas Sale of Leather on November 14th at
a local shopping mall. A percentage from sales was deducted for the local fund and we were very pleased
with the resulting improvement in our local bank balance. Barrie members assisted at the C.N.E. booth on
four days. As well, the membership participated in various craft functions and a T.V. program to
represent Leathercraft in Simcoe County.

Our annual summer picnic and Christmas get-together were well
attended and enjoyed as always. Current Executive: Pres. Kay Cloughley Respectfully submitted, Vice Pres.

BELLEVILLE:

Belleville Branch holds its meetings on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
at the Belleville Recreation Centre on Pinnacle Street. We had an average attendance at the meetings. Due
to bad weather and illness we had to cancel 4 meetings.

We were pleased to have the Leather '80
Exhibition of C.S.C.L. at Belleville for display in the Hastings County Museum, and also at the Annual
Meeting of the Ontario Municipal Recreation Association at the Four Seasons Hotel for 4 days.

We had our
pot luck picnic dinner in July at Vera Farrara's summer home and we spent two days at the C.N.E. in August
at the C.S.C.L. booth.

Jack Layton conducted a demonstration on a "Leather and Wood" wall memo, Laura
Bush and Marilyn Harry on flowers made with velvet ribbon, Irene Girling on a Poinsettia pin, Margaret
Hunt on a Clutch Purse. We were also pleased to have Jack Meharg visit us for a workshop on belts in
October.

Vera Farrara had classes for adults in Leathercraft for 10 weeks at the Recreation Centre from
September to November with Margaret Hunt assisting her. They were very eager participants, and have
requested another class starting November 18th in carving, lacing etc. We are looking forward to having
new members for our branch and C.S.C.L.

February 19th, a very faithful member and one of our first members, also another of our members, Rose

-15- HAMILTON:

Members of the Hamilton Branch were happy to host the 1981 Annual - the weather smiled on
us, and every one seemed to enjoy the weekend by the lake.. During the year at our meetings there were
demonstrations of box construction by Ruth Haig, from a workshop which she attended at
Mohawk College, a
carving demonstration by Peter Grove from Tandy's in Hamilton, and tips and tools by Bill Miller. In May
we are looking forward to a mini workshop on "Miniatures with Leather" by Madeleine Mitchell. Two
workshops were held - in October, Filigree by Bea Austin, and in November, Lace Cutting and construction
of Lace Cutters by Jean Hunter. Both were well attended and very helpful.

Members supplied articles for
sale and display at the C.N.E. and helped to man the booth. Also three of our members won prizes in the
Arts and Crafts section of the C.N.E.

During the year items were contributed to displays in various
libraries in and around Hamilton - at Burlington, Ancaster and Westdale libraries, as well as at
Terryberry library where we meet.

Our Pot Luck supper in May and the Christmas dinner and party in
December were very successful. 'The January meeting was cancelled due to the weather.

We were obliged to
find a new home this Spring. After the April meeting in the Terryberry Library, our meetings will be held
in the John Howard Society building, 19 Albert Street, Hamilton. Executive 1982 - 83:,. President - Ruth

In June
we had our annual picnic, with all of our families attending.

We started our Fall meetings with Jean
Hunter showing us how to make a lace cutter, and how to cut lace.

There was also a workshop on sandal
making in February. Also we worked on things for the convention.

We haven't seemed to have done very much
this year, due to the weather. Here's hoping for a better year to come.

TORONTO:

This year our meetings were held at St.Martin's-in-the-Field Anglican Church, near Glenlake
and Keele Streets, starting at 7:30 p.m. We appreciate being able to meet in such a congenial location,
and our average meeting attendance seems to have risen steadily because of it.

November 13th, our first
meeting of the year, was an excellent workshop on patterns for moccasin making, for which our attendance
was 29.

December 11th, our Christmas Social was a success, as was the fact we had a large selection of
library leather books to browse over and borrow.

January 8th was a "Do-it-yourself" and "Question and
Answers" meeting. All of the questions were answered to the satisfaction of all.

February 12th was Purse
Making by Gladys Riddell, with the twenty-five people present making a pattern for themselves.

Still
to come are:
March 12th - Purse Assembly
April 16th - Leather Design (heat marking)
May 14th - Air brush
dyeing
June 11th - Hobby night and season closing.

Respectfully submitted,

Gladys Riddell,
President.

WOODSTOCK:

Woodstock Branch had many high-lights on their usual busy agenda. Some events had to be
cancelled, but they are still to come.

In April, Jean Hunter, now F.C.S.C.L., gave a very instructive
session. on lacing and making our own lace makers. Some of our own members filled in on the cancellations
and two gave full instructional lessons on flower pins and Christmas poinsettias. We had a bag design for
soft bags and: this month's program is a branch project on cardboard boxes.

We had only one workshop this
year - Ruth Haig A.C.S.C.L. held a very successful workshop on one piece wallets and also showed her
slides on the World Craft Council.

We had our usual picnic and Christmas party which were much enjoyed by
all present.

Our membership is down a little, but we are hoping for improvement on that score and we are
grateful for the visitors who have come from other guilds to attend our meetings. We have eight paid-up
members, Respectfully submitted, Kathleen O'Riley.
