Evelyn Burgess

← People of the Society · on record 1967–1978

Everything the Society’s own records say of Evelyn Burgess — the offices held, the standings conferred, and the awards won — gathered on one page. Where the records are silent, so is this one.

In memoriam · 9 April 1978

Who “passed away on April 9, 1978, at her residence R. R. #22 Waterdown, Ontario, while attending her animals, her labor of love.” She came to Hamilton from England in 1951; her talents, the Summer 1978 newsletter says, were many — she taught voice and violin, lectured for the Hamilton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and, in southern England during the Second World War, on food production for the British Department of Agriculture. She kept a small crafts shop at her home selling her leatherwork and the produce of her land, and for about five years taught leathercraft to senior citizens in Burlington and district. Active in the C.S.C.L. Artisans, the Hamilton Leathercraft Guild and the Hamilton Horticultural Society, and a member of her church choir: “A real loss to us all.” The tribute is by Muriel McKnight.
