President's Message
I would like to welcome everyone to this year's 67th C.S.C.L. Annual General Meeting, hosted by the Hamilton Guild.
I hope that everyone will have great time and welcome the new members to the Guild and be willing to pass on any information that will help them in their projects.
This past year there was a quite a few workshop's held at Paul Kitchener's location on Rangeview Road, Mississauga, which were well attended.
I would like to give a big thank you to Paul for the use of his facilities and for his generosity in supplying the amenities to the groups.
I hope to have more workshop's for the coming year and if you are interested in a certain project and want to do a workshop on it let the workshop committee know and they will try and set it up plus if you have a suggestion for a workshop let the committee know or contact any of the Executive and they will pass it on to the committee.
Yours sincerely,
Jim Wilkes
President

President's Message
I would like to welcome everyone to this year's CSCL Annual General Meeting, hosted by the Norland Guild. Norland is always a great host for any event and I am supremely confident everyone will have a great time this weekend!
This is also a chance to spend some time reconnecting with our friends from different locations around the province, and to showcase our leather work projects. This year also comes with some serious business that needs to be addressed, specifically revising and updating our constitution. This organization has been around since the 50's and as the times have changed I am afraid so must we, after all progress is inevitable. Change is always a challenge, but I feel that this change is important to the future of this organization.
Something that also goes along with any organization that has been around as long as the CSCL has, is loss; in the last 2 years since I became president, tragically we have lost a few members. Their passion for leather work and this organization has helped to make it what it is today. Rather than mourn their loss, let us instead celebrate their memory and work together to promote our craft to others and become better leather workers ourselves.

So in closing I would like to encourage everyone to make the most of this year's annual, have some fun, spend time with cherished friends and learn something new.

Financial Review Report
The financial books for the 2015/2016 years were reviewed and found to be in order. Respectfully submitted by Lauchlin Harrison and Paul Kitchener.
"Canadian Leathercraft" Newsletter
by Madeleine Mitchell, Editor
The "Canadian Leathercrafter", the quarterly Newsletter of CSCL, features our Guild's news and events, how-to projects, and even some tips and ideas from CSCL's past. Most issues have articles either from one of our Branches, or our Members-at-Large. As always, these contributions are welcomed.
The Spring 2015 issue highlighted the Annual in Burlington, ON hosted by the Mississauga Guild. This issue listed the recipients of the many Awards and Ribbons and celebrated CSCL's new Fellow -- Karen Weber, and the new Associate, Eugene Pik. The 2015 Weston Trophy was presented to Mississauga. We remembered our dear Member Peter Grove FCSCL, who passed away in May 2015.
In the Summer 2015 issue, Lauren Malec reviewed several of the excellent resources available from the CSCL Lending Library. Members-at-Large are members who do not belong to a Branch but continue to contribute to CSCL and participate in many events.
The Autumn 2015 edition featured an article about Joyce Scruton, who helped form the Mississauga Guild and passed away in October 2015. Thanks to the Norland Branch who contributed technical articles. Pictures from the November Workshop where members had fun making "Lasted Boxes".
The Winter 2015-16 edition contained detailed articles by Bob Pfister on "Making an Embossed Belt Buckle" and a comprehensive article about "Bench Tools and Splitters" by Lauch Harrison. Also mentioned, the Constitution review that is underway, as CSCL approaches its 66th Annual Weekend, being hosted by the Norland Branch.
My wishes for CSCL's continued growth and success,
Respectfully submitted, Madeleine Mitchell, Editor 2003-2016

Get Well Cards were also sent out to some of our members. Sympathy cards were sent out to family's of members who passed on over the year.
Council of Fellows Report
Sean Dalgetty
Council of Fellows met at Paul Kitchener's residence on May 1, 2016, to judge the Associate and Fellow entries. We also discuss the upcoming Biennial, Membership, Judging, and General Status of the Society, to determine if there was more that we could do to advance the Society overall.
Several suggestions were put forward to attempt to increase membership or interest in membership from the people attending our classes. It was thought that perhaps more classes should be offered by the Society. We look forward to attempting this for next year, and to try to collaborate with the Executive to make this happen.
Sincerely, Sean Dalgetty, FCSCL
Workshop Report
Lauch Harrison, Rob Regan
The Previous Annual gave rise to List of Workshops. The Workshop Committee has been using the list with very good success and attendance. The Fall workshop on Lasted Boxes was well attended and created a profit to go to the Society. Paul Kitchener not only made the space available he also donated some of the leather used in the projects. Lauch and Sean were there to offer advice and help. The next Workshop was on Machine Sewing -- part 1 -- the class was well attended and everyone in attendance got to use various sewing machines at Paul's Focused on Food Warehouse. Sean and Paul explained the mechanics; the project was a small zippered coin purse. Due to limited time Sewing Part 2 will be held during the next couple of months. The interest in Eugene's pewter castings gave rise to a Pewter Casting -- part 1 Workshop held in April, attended by 7 people, on mould making and silicone casting. The use of oven hardening resins to make the originals and then encase them using a two part flexible silicone polymer will be explored further when part 2 of the workshop takes place in the near future.

Web Administrator Report
by Kristi Cino, Web Administrator, and CSCL
Hello everyone,
As of May 2, 2016, the hit counter on our website reflects 93,652, which means that 32,874 people visited our website last year (these stats are since April, 2015).
As of May 2, 2016, our Facebook page reflects 232 "Likes," which means that 97 people "Liked" our page last year (these stats are since April, 2015).
Website is steady. There had been some concerns raised about updating the website, but I've done what is within my abilities and it is up and working, as we've gotten emails from people visiting the website. Should we have further concerns that I am unable to address, perhaps we should look at hiring an outside company who is more familiar with making the website more mobile friendly, etc.
www.canadianleathercraft.org

Things required, moving forward:
- Pictures from the 2015 Annual - More information about library processes, instructions, sign out procedures, who can borrow, etc. - Any pictures/updates from guilds, which can be added to the website - Pictures of people's work that they're willing to share on Facebook (the more pictures, the more traffic)
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely, Kristi Grove, Web Administrator, CSCL

While doing a Shot Shell Belt Pouch, a lead weighted shot bag, a tool box, and a card case. We are down in members to six people. We continue to press on. All the best.

May we finished working on our vests.
June was our annual BBQ Get-together. The Club demonstrated at the Fenelon Falls Fair and the Kinmount Fair.
September finished projects, will be making some items to sell at the next meeting to raise money for the club. Decided not to have our Spaghetti Dinner this year. Jim Corbett's Family donated his tools and leather to the club.
October made Dream Catchers and little purses to sell at a craft sale to make money for the club.
November worked on Dream Catchers and little purses to sell. Several new members practised carving to get the feel of the swivel knife. One of our members attended the Lasted Box workshop and will be showing the rest how to do it later in the year.
January we worked on making items with filigree patterns and planning the Annual.
Feb we covered boxes with leather and decorated them.
March some members attended the part 1 of the Stitching workshop in lieu of our meeting.
April some members attended the part 1 of the Pewter workshop. At our meeting we worked on our projects and getting things ready for the Convention.
October: Joyce Scruton showed how to cover bottles with scraps of leather and made suggestions on how to paint them after. Sorry to say this was Joyce's last demonstration as she passed away on October 17, 2016. This was a really good demonstration as Joyce was wound up and really enjoying doing what she liked best, passing on information of her knowledge of leather and her tricks of the trade.
November: Bob Pfister showed us how to make a Texas billfold and we had a minutes silence for Joyce and reminisced some of the stories and things that she did for the leather guild.
December: The group met at the Pump House for Christmas and then we all went back to Paul's office for coffee and dessert.
January: Karen Weber showed us how to make a braid bracelet with clasp and it was a hands on workshop.
February: Jim Wilkes did a workshop on making leather feathers and with Paul's help showing photo's of different types of feathers and where they can be used as decorations on projects plus can be used as ear rings.
March: Eugene Pik and Paul Kitchener explained how to make patterns out of modelling clay to form for the silicon moulds.
April: Reviewed projects that we can put in for the Weston Trophy and other projects that people are working on for the Annual in May.
[This branch report's own entries run "May... June... September" and then, without a heading change, "October... November... December... January... February... March... April" a second time; both spans are printed as one continuous report and kept exactly as printed rather than split or reordered.]
[This second October entry dates Joyce Scruton's death to "October 17, 2016"; the Editor's Report on p.4 of this same document instead dates her passing, and the newsletter tribute to it, to "October 2015" -- a full year apart for what appears to be the same event. Both dates are kept exactly as printed rather than reconciled.]

MAL Report
Respectfully submitted Lauren McPherson, MAL Representative
[Signed "Lauren McPherson" in this heading and "Lauren Malec" in the closing line below; the Society's own records elsewhere give her name as Lauren Malec (formerly McPherson) -- both spellings kept exactly as printed.]
Continuing the MAL tradition to contribute to the Summer Issue of CANADIAN LEATHERCRAFT, this 2015-16 newsletter volume ran our inaugural article CSCL Library Review.
Returning for the second year at the Thorndale Fall Fair, Lauren Malec (MAL) demonstrated leathercraft and set up a sales booth with the help of Jan Malec on Saturday, September 26, 2015. How To Leather Maché and Making Barbed Leather Jewellery instructions were given, complemented by finished leathercraft examples by Dorothy McPherson, MAL (1990). Participation in this daylong event also meant competing for attention with this fair building's attractions: a special pig breed and a wandering turtle to name a few. Photos for viewing are on the MAL Display Table. David McPherson, FCSCL, Life Member, MAL (1980) provided his display shelves which were lined with his inventory of handcrafted leather earrings, scarf bows and holly pins for sale. Marion Kehoe, Life Member, MAL (1952) who had demonstrated Leather, Coil Pots, Sock Monkeys, and, also, Potato Jewellery in the Thorndale Fair Community Building for more than 30 years also had sales.
MALs are happy when they are able to attend CSCL workshops throughout the year. Some MALs are among CSCL's official judges and serve as members of the Executive Council. We appreciate and value all of the CSCL website up-keep as it is our easy visit to CSCL news. Remember, whenever you win a ribbon or award, be sure to jot down the particulars: Date, Location, Item, Type of Ribbon or Name of Award. Now is a great time to update bio's for advance preparation of future requirements.
We look forward to CSCL's continuing longevity and success.
Respectfully submitted, Lauren Malec, MAL Representative

Library Report
by Paul Kitchener
"The library is up and running and can be found on our website. Ordering is simple and orders are filled quickly. Kim is presently inputting a number of leather related books that recently surfaced. She is also scanning a number of designs from those books and will be added to the Library. I have also donated a number of books on art and teaching art that will soon be listed. The library, at present, is being used very little and we hope that it will be used more frequently next year. We will try to high-lite some books each month on the website. So, keep checking."
"Canadian Leathercraft" Newsletter
by Barbara Chynoweth, Editor
The "Canadian Leathercrafter", the quarterly Newsletter of CSCL, features our Guild's news and events, how-to projects, and even some tips and ideas from CSCL's past. Most issues have articles either from one of our Branches, or our Members-at-Large. As always, these contributions are welcomed.
The Spring 2016 issue covered the 66th Annual CSCL Convention hosted by the Norland Branch. We were pleased to have David Trotter as our guest presenter talking on colouring, finishes and texture. Madeleine Mitchell and Dorothy McPherson were welcomed as Honourary Life Members.
In the Summer 2016 issue we highlighted the Workshop on sewing a Leather Bag in June; the history of the CSCL Quilt was outlined. Our MAL contributed articles for this issue.
The Fall 2016 issue we covered the Leather Waxed Mug Workshop and the Hinged Box Workshop. The first part of the CSCL Annual Awards was listed. Hamilton contributed this issue with information on Forgotten Tools of the Harness Trade.
The Winter 2016-17 issue covered the second part of the CSCL Annual Awards. Mississauga contributed information on making an Embossed Eagle Head Flask. A book review was contributed by Lauren, an MAL. Lauch Harrison from Hamilton Branch submitted information on Tips for Use of CSO #84 Splitter/Skiver.
I am always looking for articles and ideas for the Newsletter.

Council of Fellows Report

The fellows met at the residence of Paul Kitchener, on Sunday April 23rd, 2017. We judged the Weston Trophy pieces, and it is noted that only one guild had the requisite number of pieces in order to be judged. The trophy is currently being engraved. We also received one fellow entry for judging. We only had two fellows and one associate present for judging, due to scheduling conflicts, but were able to proceed regardless.
Workshop Report
Lauch Harrison, ACSCL
The Committee was pleased to present the workshops in a couple of venues, the Norland School Hall Community Centre and Focused-on-Foods. These workshop spaces have allowed our presentations at a minimal cost. Thanks to Paul Kitchener and the dedicated Norland Executive for their support and co-operation.
We were able to hold duplicate workshops at both locations; this duplication gave members the choice of attending the workshop in the vicinity or travelling. Some members went to both, this gave them more experience and hands on work.
Hinged Boxes and Blackjacks were held in Mississauga and in Norland. The two-part Branch Meeting project done by Paul Kitchener for the Eagle Embossed Flask was held in Norland.
Attendance was good at all the workshops and overall there was a profit returned to the CSCL. The Hinged Box Workshops had 16 attendees and returned $170.15 profit to the CSCL. Lauch Harrison led both workshops and was well pleased that every participant finish their boxes. The Blackjack Workshop had 14 attendees and returned a profit of $202.40 to the CSCL. Lauch Harrison led both workshops and though they were long and arduous but everyone finished their Mugs.
Please consider the workshops on the list and comment on the ones you would like to do next year. Thanks for making the Workshops a success this past year.

In past, our website canadianleathercraft.org was hosted for free by Tundra Leather. Due to the web hosting support issues Tundra moved to another hosting provider, and we had to find a new hosting provider too. The best option was to move canadianleathercraft.org to Wordpress engine located on Google Cloud Platform. Eugene migrated canadianleathercraft.org to the new hosting.
As part of the website redesign:
- Created 7 new posts with the information about our workshops, newsletter and the Annual meeting. - Edited and uploaded all the images received from Kristi and Paul. - Added text to the "Library" page - it was written by Madeleine for Canadian Leathercraft newsletter. - Re-made the CSCL logo in higher resolution. - Added social share buttons for images and posts. Added "find us on Facebook" button next to posts. - Combined "About us" and "Guilds" pages together to save space on the menu and to make the combined page more informational. - Removed multiple contact addresses from the website and created a 'contact us' form that sends an email to the address [email address removed], monitored by Eugene.
MailChimp email distribution system should be used to send mass emails about our workshops and newsletters. We can grow the list of subscribers up to 2000 emails for free. There are MailChimp subscriptions forms located on our website and on the Facebook page. We already have 23 subscribers.
www.canadianleathercraft.org
Page 13
We will pay for the basic Wordpress hosting plan between $6-$10 per month. First year is free. Every year we also pay for the domain registration, about $35/year tax in, but the exact numbers may slightly fluctuate depending on the usage and on the USD/CAD rate. Eugene will provide bills to get the reimbursement.
I'd like to propose to:
- Add more website editors and FB page admins. They could create posts about their local activities. We need editors from Hamiltom, Norland and MAL - Add all existing members into MailChimp list and send the Newsletter through MailChimp. - Post clear instructions on the website how to become a member. We may create a form to gather the necessary information and to accept an electronic payment.
Regards,
Eugene

On Labour Day weekend members of the club demonstrated doing leather crafts and explaining about some of the leather items on display at a booth in the Pioneer Building at the Kinmount Fair.
Some of the Norland members had indicated that they would like to learn how to do embossing so after some investigating and questions about where we could get information Paul Kitchener offered to come to our meeting www.canadianleathercraft.org

in September and teach us how to do the embossed eagle's head that was on the Winter edition of the Newsletter; the effort proved to take longer than one meeting so Paul returned in October to finish up.
In November we had a CSCL Workshop to make a hinged box with instructor Lauch Harrison and nobody left till they were completed.
In January the members were shown a leather object from the Tandy catalogue and were instructed to create their own pattern and then create the object from the pattern that they made. Members were learning how to figure out patterns and assembly of their item. This project carried over to the February meeting.
In March we had some fun creating different coloured leather fish which we are using to decorate our table.
On April 8th we had another CSCL Workshop making leather mugs lead by Lauch Harrison. The 29th of April we got together to finalize things for the convention and finish up any items.
For May we still have to determine what we are going to do and in June we have a BBQ at one of the member's homes.
MAL Report

Continuing the MAL tradition to contribute to the Summer Issue of CANADIAN LEATHERCRAFT, our 2016-17 CSCL Library Review of 8 books exceeded last year's coverage.
The Thorndale Fall Fair, Community Centre was the site for a third consecutive year of leather demonstration. On Saturday, September 24, 2016, Lauren (MAL 2006) demonstrated Single, Double, Triple and Quadruple Cordovan Lacing, with respective instructional displays and finished examples. Other crafters demonstrated pottery, weaving, sewing, coin collectibles, woodworking, alpaca farming and tatting.
I know of one enthusiastic MAL who had mailed his leather item to meet the judging deadline. Good luck to all MAL participants whose work comprises this 67th Annual Convention MAL Display Table.
Remember, whenever you win a ribbon or an award be sure to jot down the particulars: Date, Location, Item, Title, Description, Type of Ribbon or Name of Award. Now is a great time to update bio's for advance preparation of future resumé requirements.
MALs are happy when they are able to attend CSCL workshops throughout the year. Some MALs are among CSCL's official judges and serve as members of the Executive Council. When distance prohibits attendance, as MAL Representative I often revisit any yearly Annual Report, especially to read a welcoming address (‘President Message’) made at an Annual Meeting.
I heard a quote recently that is well worth repeating: "Diversity: the art of thinking independently together" describes my diverse CSCL year. I received website updates from our newly appointed Electronic Communications Officer (ECO), joined our first-time Executive Meeting held via Skype, and co-ordinated the borrowing of ten more CSCL Library books with help of several CSCL members.
Have a great summer!
