The President's Message

Here we are again, another year older, and another year of experience behind us, and as the old
song goes deeper in debt. I don't mean financial, I mean deeper in debt to all the people who may have been leathercrafter's
but for that initial contact we didn't make; or even worse the contact we didn't follow up on. That casual contact that showed
some interest, but was non-committal, maybe with that little bit of extra persuasion, we would have another person interested
enough to start doing leather work.

A special welcome to our American friends, members, and publishers. The power of
advertising has been very rewarding this year with 6 new members, from the U.S.A. and Ontario. Some have joined at the local
level and some as that special Member-at-Large.

Ruth Haig ran a very well attended C.S.C.L. workshop in Hamilton last fall 914
attended). Betsy Rennie has a workshop next month (May 29) making a vest pattern, at Cooksville United Church.

Glenn Nelson our
Vice-President last year found that he was unable to attend meetings because of leather business commitments. We will miss you
Glenn.

Keep an open mind, listen and watch your members with all your projects big and small, be prepared for change. Some of
the suggestions from your peers will have merit, and may be worth doing. Change is sometimes hard but it can be very rewarding
at the same time.

Our old fashion Winter hasn't been kind to us this year. Members have had injuries, sone due to the weather,
and others have problems due to age and physical conditions.

One of our biggest losses was Bob Muma. Bob has long been
everyone's mentor, in all forms of Leathercraft for over 40 years, but very few of the newer people had ever met him. Last
summer my wife and I drove to the Muma's home. We spent a couple of delightful hours with them, saw their home, garden, and his
studio where he worked on another of his loves, "Mosses of the World" of which he had over 2000 species.

Last September Bob
Muma came to the opening of "Leather '92", at the Etobicoke City Hall. He read his critiques for the winning pieces and Dorothy
Muma presented the awards. After the formalities he walked about meeting as many as he could. I think we will very easily
forget those leather entries, but meeting and talking to him will long remain in our hearts and memories. Yours truly Don
Macleod, President C.S.C.L. 1990-1993

ARCHIVIST REPORT - Kevin Armstrong - Not available. LIBRARIAN REPORT - Alan Foss - Not available. BRANCH REPORTS
HAMILTON

This year Hamilton Branch had a very productive and enjoyable year with three new members Isabella McDermick and Art
and Eva Harris joining our group. This brings the Membership up to 21. In September, the CSCL workshop was held in Hamilton
with Ruth Haig teaching the Lasted Box technique. We had members from Norland, Toronto, and Woodstock. The Branch had a guest
from Mississauaga, Lois MacPherson to demonstrate and give a "hands on" evening, making Bracelets. We learned Lace Making with
several older Guild members combining their efforts on instruction. Also, Betsy Rennie explained to the new members how to do
the Arrowhead Basketweave. On November 9th, Muriel Mcknight and Betsy Rennie sat for the day at Terryberry Library. The table
was at a favourable location and many people stopped to watch us demonstrate and ask questions. At Christmas, the Branch
members went to Swiss Chalet for a meal and then the Group toured Dundurn Castle. The Curator, Bill Nesbitt gave us a lively
tour on the history of the Castle and also showed us leather artifacts of the time period. Some were in need of repair. The
Castle was decorated with candles on Christmas trees as would be the case of Sir Allan McNab's time. The Hamilton Branch had
three Library displays. Last November the people that visit Ancaster Public Library enjoyed our Leatherwork display. In January
our work was on view at Westdale Public Library and in March our work is displayed at Terryberry Public Library. We've had good
reviews from the local people and were asked for a display in the 1993/94 season. Muriel McKnight put up the displays each
time. This past year, Bea Austin was in the Hospital a couple of times and we're glad she's had speedy recoveries each time.
The members learned Filigree from Muriel McKnight and 5 and 7 Strand Braiding from Ruth Haig. April brings us a flower
demonstration by Betsy Rennie. I would like to thank the Hamilton members for a productive year at the Guild meetings. In May,
the CSCL Workshop will be on making Patterns for Leather Vests to fit the needs of the members. Betsy Rennie is giving this
workshop at the Cooksville United Church in Mississauga. Branch President, Betsy Rennie, FCSCL.

MISSISSAUGA

We had high hopes for new members with our listing in Mississauga Recreation and Parks Annual flier, but
they didn't list our group in 1992. They apologized, promising to list us this year. We did get one new member with the listing
in, "THE LEATHERCRAFTERS JOURNAL". Again the power of the written word, in other words, "Advertising". Our club projects really
didn't take off as anticipated, but they did lead to a lot of step-by-step discussions. One person did complete one project. It
was an old project, from an old magazine write-up. The instructions wre very vague, and the drawing details were very sketchy.
Good girl, Lois, it really looks great. New people mean more basic instruction, and new questions to answer. One new member
with lots of questions, should get M.S.C.L. back on track, and do basic one meeting projects, simple, easy but informative to
all, new and old. At our September meeting, Lea Love made a few announcements. He was stopping the importing of, "The
Leathercrafters Journal" from the U.S.A., so everyone had to take out their own subscription. Lea's work, and personal touch
did give the club a comfprtable revenue for the past 6 years. Lea also announced he would not be our Treasurer next year, after
6 years he just wants to do his own thing. (Leather Work?) Thanks for all work and commitment in the past. Mississauga Guild
thanks you, Lea and we want you to stay as active as you can, and help us to keep on track. Branch President, Donald B.
Macleod. NORLAND

The members of the Norland Branch have been very active over the past year. In September, we started our year
with a pot luck supper, followed by our meeting and work time. Hilda Chynoweth was our program co-ordinator for the second
year. Hilda prepared kits of material needed for the projects we worked on for each meeting. This again has worked out very
well. We try to complete our business part of the evening within a half hour, this gives us about two and a half hours for
working on our projects. Members have made bracelets, card cases, weed pots, pendants, done some leather mache, plus some
personal items members brought to the meeting to get help with. We had a one day workshop at Hilda's, some members worked on
items they were making for Christmas presents. Norland has been busy organizing the 1993 Convention. With a small membership
everyone has to pitch in and help. We now have two new C.S.C.L. members, bringing our membership now to nine. Three people from
our club attended a workshop on lasted boxes in Hamilton last fall. Repectfully submitted, Phyllis McHale

TORONTO

Well, another year has come to pass. I feel that we made a good start with our hands-on workshops. Our theme
for next year will be the same as last year, "Back to Basics". I believe this hands-on approach creates interest and gets the
club motivated. Our Christmas party was another good one. Rick Fielding played his guitar and food was excellent. Special
thanks to Jessie Little for the workshops and guidance. Thanks also to all the demonstrators and participants.

Well, here's to
next year, Bruce White. WOODSTOCK

The Woodstock Branch closed off last year after the Annual, with a workshop at the home of
Beula Reynolds. Lois MacPherson instructed those in attendance, on making "Bracelets". In June we held our Pot Luck picnic at
the new home of Jean and George Pickering. There, we set our program for the next year, and then enjoyed a tour of the new
house. During the summer, our member were kept busy, preparing for the Leather '92 Exhibition, held in Etobicoke. September was
a busy month, with the Exhibition, and then a workshop in Hamilton on "Lasted Boxes" lead by Ruth Haig. At our own meeting, we
worked on covered bottles, hosted and demonstrated by Madeleine Mitchell. At our October meeting we did Magic Wallets, by Nancy
Durham, November meeting, "mice" by Beula Reynolds (you know those cute little critters at last year's Annual!) December, we
held our Christmas Party at Madeleine Mitchell's and enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner. In January, we worked on rosette change
purses. A guest from Sarnia, Al Williams attended this meeting. In February, we started soft leather bags at Beula Reynolds.
The March meeting was set aside for selection of Weston Trophy pieces, and then we worked on plaques, demonstrated by Loreen
Manuel. We will be holding a workshop on "Framed Handbags" on May 22, 1993 from 9:30 - 4:00 p.m. The address is 500 Parkinson
Road, Woodstock. Contact Beula Reynolds, for more info. Woodstock holds their meetings on the 4th Thursday of the month form
September to June. Our Executive for 1993-1994 is: President - Nancy Durham Secretary - Beula Reynolds Treasurer - Loreen
Manuel Past President - Madeleine Mitchell. Respectfully Submitted, Nancy Durham, President.

NEWS FROM SOME "MEMBERS-AT-LARGE"

Some years ago Barrie Branch C.S.C.L. was forced to disband because of lack of
active membership. We became Members-at-Large and continue to do leathercraft on a more limited basis. At that time we had a
supply of leather and dyes, etc. for use by our workers. At present, because of declining health, we have only two or three
people doing any leather work at all. Over this period of time our supply cupboard has somewhat depleted. However, we still
have a limited amount of leather (mostly heavier weight), some bulk dyes and finishes and some hardware. Over time tools and
some basic "how to" books have also come our way from friends and members who can no longer practice their craft. At our
Christmas get together it was decided that in order for these things to reach people who could put them to use, with teaching
or for use by other C.S.C.L. members, we would like to offer them to the Executive Council. The Council could therefore sell
them and use the money for the good of the Society or see that they got good homes where they will by used to further the
craft. If the Executive feel that they wish to take us up of this suggestion, we could arrange to take these items to the
Annual and someone there could assume responsibility on behalf of C.S.C.L. We hope that you will find some merit in this proposal
and after a decision has been reached will contact us regarding any further information required. Yours Truly, Kay Cloughley.

THE DECISION THAT WAS REACHED BY THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL AT THE MARCH MEETING WAS THAT THE GOODS WILL BE SOLD AT THE C.S.C.L.
WORKSHOP ON MAY 29, 1993 AT COOKSVILLE UNITED CHURCH. THE REASON FOR THIS IS BECAUSE OF LACK OF TIME TO PUT A RESALE VALUE ON THE
GOODS FOR THE ANNUAL. EDITOR'S REPORT Lois and I would like to thank you for sending enough material to make the Canadian
Leathercraft interesting. This year we've had several good articles written by the membership and we would like to thank these
people for their contribution. Dorothy Muma for her article on What an Associate and a Fellow is; and the late Bob Muma for
writing the Critiques for the Bi-Ennial winning prizes. He did such an excellent job. Don Macleod wrote an article on the Mouse
House and Scanner for your computer. Bruce White on a Free Form Stacked Box, and Rene Hackstetter wrote an article on Chateau
Renault: City of Leather and a Book Review. Dorothy McPherson wrote an article on their "Busy Year". There was an old issue
reprinted by Deane H. Russell. We made an error on the first two issues. Could you please correct the Volume No. XLII to XLI.
We apologize for our error. Respectfully Submitted Betsy Rennie, Editor.

Respectfully Submitted,
Jack MeHarg, Past President.

[The Society's own errata sheet for this Annual Report (1993-annual-report-errata) records that Jessie Little and Harold Brister withdrew as directors "at their request", thanked "for the past", and that Betsy Rennie is already standing as 2nd Vice-President above. It also corrects two spellings printed here as the Society first set them: "Ruth haig" for Ruth Haig, and "Bruce Whilte" for Bruce White.]

The words above are the document’s own, as the paper prints them. Spelling and spacing are left as they stand.
