President's message
Welcome all to our 2006 annual meeting and convention.
These past two years as President of the CSCL have gone by very quickly indeed. The
only time gone faster was my daughter's twenty-one years.
We have not been able to get the changes done to our constitution as yet. This is an ongoing
endeavor. With some luck and more effort this will be coming.
Our Fellows have elected David McPherson as their new chairman going into the next few
years. David is a new Fellow and graciously accepted this challenge earlier this month.
With David's attention to detail and strong organization abilities I know we will have a
strong Fellow's voice to help guide our Society. Thank you, David.
A couple of workshops were held this year. I lead part I of a carving class last fall,
which seemed to be well accepted. Part 2 had to be cancelled in the winter, but will be
Page 2
rescheduled. The Leather Factory hosted our group at the Mississauga store for an evening
with Jim Linnell. Those that attended found it to be very worthwhile, both informative
and enjoyable. David McPherson led a box-making workshop, also in Mississauga, that
was the best-attended single workshop we've had in years. Thanks again, David.
Workshops are the single most valuable tool we have as a group. We must continue with
more. Feel free to approach your branch Presidents with ideas.
This year we can all take notice of the Mississauga group. I think they are the fastest
growing group in the CSCL. Paul Kitchener leads a Saturday morning open class that the
Leather Factory's Mississauga store. Although not part of the CSCL, Paul has done
wonderful things with this class and it does feed new members to the Mississauga group
and ultimately the CSCL. I have had occasion to visit that class on two Saturdays and have
been very impressed with the work being done. The open approach to this class structure
is very conducive to learning leatherwork and has changed my own view on teaching. A
lookout warning to the rest of us ...Mississauga is coming.
Weston Trophy entries were from three clubs this year. Average project scores were well
up this time, even with a lot of projects being entered by novices. Again... Mississauga
is coming.
Lauch Harrison has worked at providing us with a good venue for this weekend's events. It
looks like the weather will cooperation and allow us to enjoy the Burlington waterfront.
Don't skip any workshops, but please enjoy our surroundings. Lauchlin has also invited
Andy Hughes to join us this year. We met Andy at an auction in Ohio last year and
quickly became friends. I understand Andy is a graduate of the Cordwainers College in
England, a multi year course in fine leatherwork and its' production. Introduce yourself to
Andy and talk leather. Andy is a fine fellow, willing to share his knowledge and
experience freely.
We have two new sustaining members this year. Capricorn Leather and Zelocovitch
Leather. Welcome and thank you. We hope we can earn your continued support.
I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge our members from Norland. The Chynoweth
clan continues to provide a strong leadership role for the whole CSCL. If we could all
learn to be as organized and selfless as they, we would all be better off. Please read the
"we" as "me". Thanks, Norland.
Thank you all for coming and participating in our annual 2006. Look, learn and share.
Peter Grove FCSCL
• 1st Vice: No Report
• Treasurers Report: Please read the Treasurers Report and if you have any questions I will be
happy to answer them. This year Peter Grove, Phyllis McHale and Della Chynoweth went to
the Orangeville Branch of the CIBC and had all our accounts and GIC moved to that branch for
easier access for me. Our GIC's have been transferred to Flexi GIC which has a little higher
interest rate. So we are running smoothly again. Thanks again this year to Barbara
Chynoweth and Phyllis McHale for auditing the treasurer’s books.
Respectfully submitted by Della Chynoweth
• Auditors Report: The financial books for the 2005/2006 years were audited and found to be
in order. Phyllis McHale and Barbara Chynoweth
• Bulletin 2005-2006 Editor's Report
The "Canadian Leathercraft" has been published 4 times since the last Annual. The spring 2005 issue
featured the Award Winners from the 2005 Annual hosted by the Woodstock Branch CSCL.
Page 3
Congratulations to all the award winners and our two new Fellow Members - Nancy Durham
and David McPherson.
The summer edition focused on Ruth Haig FCSCL, who received the prestigious John Mather Award
presented by the Ontario Crafts Council.
In the autumn of 2005, CSCL welcomed Montana leather carver, Jim Linnell and the bulletin covered
his visit, as well as a Carving Workshop With our President, Peter Grove.
As Editor, I presented a plan to have contributions to the newsletter from the Branches. Hamilton
Branch was asked to contribute to the next issue.
The winter 2005-06 issue featured a detailed article about "Osbourne Round Knives" submitted by
Hamilton Branch President, Lauch Harrison ACSCL
The Spring 2006 edition is looking forward to contributions from the Mississauga Branch.
Many thanks to contributors in the past year, and as always, your ideas and articles welcomed for
future editions of the "Canadian Leathercraft"
Respectfully submitted, Madeleine Mitchell, Editor
• Membership: Each Branch picked up new members this year, but we will have to work harder to
get more people interested in joining the Club.
We had a total of 64 members for the year, 48 were general members, with 11 Fellows and 5
Associates. We have four sustaining members.
We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Jessie Little who was a long time member.
Respectfully submitted by Phyllis McHale, Membership Chairperson
• Correspondence: Thinking of you cards are on the front table to be signed by CSCL members
and then will be sent out to our members who are unable to attend the 2006 annual. Sympathy
cards were sent out to family's of members that passed on over the year. If you know of any one having a
special occasion or in hospital let me know I would be glad to drop them a line.

• Library: The move to the new location has given new focus to the Library and the "lost"
Libraries turned up in Kevin's Basement.
When the Larmour 1ibrary was taken to Paul Kitchener's Warehouse for Storage from the
Church many of the dated and meaningless pieces were removed. The Larmour Collection and the
work shop tools were consolidate on to one skid, the skid was shrink wrapped and placed in
the racks.
When the Archives were brought from Kevin's to the warehouse a stalwart group exposed
themselves to toxic mould to reduce the archives to a workable amount. The group removed the
contaminated material, and split the archives up, Nancy Durham has the task of making one
complete set of bulletin’s, Madeleine Mitchell has all the photographs and negatives, Paul
stored the remaining material with the Larmour Library so that it can be protected until a
more suitable home is found.
I will be formatting the Teaching Standards to computer files so the info will be available to all
members.
Expect to see some new books, reviews and requests will be gladly accepted

• Council of Fellows: David McPherson as the new Chairman of the Fellows gave a short report.
He was chosen for this position. They met on April 2, 2006 to judge 3 Weston Trophy entries and
1 Associate entry. He was very pleased with the entries.
• Archives: It is noted that Nancy Durham has the bulletins from the Archives. Madeleine Mitchell
has all the slides and Photographs. Della Chynoweth has all the treasurers and membership
material. Lauchlan Harrison has the Guest book and signs. It was also suggested that each group
assemble their own Archive list. The stuff that Norland Group has from the Barrie Group is to
remain in Norland for the time being.
• Web Site: 2005-2006 Web Site Report: In November 2005, the CSCL website became
fully operational with news of CSCL, membership information and contact numbers, as well as a
gallery of pictures, and links to leather businesses and sites of interest. A couple of sample newsletters
were included on the site as well.
I hope you and your friends will take some time to have a look the website - it can be found at
www.canadianleathercraft.org
Hopefully it's easy to navigate and will help to connect us interested folks from literally all corners
of the globe. I know we have already had a question from the leather worker about a stitching
machine that I forwarded to Peter '"rove to answer. Also in Woodstock, because of our
internet exposure, I have been contacted by our local Rogers Cable Station for an interview.
Since we seem to have more interest, I'm in the process of setting up a counting system to track how
many hits we have.
If anybody has suggestions for the site, be sure to drop me a line. Respectfully submitted,
Madeleine Mitchell
• Hamilton Chapter of the CSCL: The Hamilton Guild has been hard at work in our usual
monthly programs held at Tundra Leather. Coming off last Year's Weston Trophy, giving us
bragging rights, has not made us complacent. We are still struggling to get new members and have
a new couple that will attend the annual. The Hamilton Chapter has 11 members and will
Have 7 meetings in 2005 - 2006 year. Our Chapter workshops were as follows: October, -
Carving Techniques, November -, December -Ornaments, January, February & March -
Shaker Boxes. At our March Meeting all positions were held as acclaimed,
Peter - VP & Treasurer, Muriel - Secretary, Sean - Memberships,
And yours truly, Lauch Harrison - Chapter President
• 2005 - 2006 Woodstock Branch Report: Woodstock Branch CSCL meets at the
Woodstock Museum. New members are always welcomed. Our program included: dyeing
techniques, saddle stitching, lacing, tooling and "hinged" boxes by David McPherson.0ur
social events included our June picnic, Christmas potluck dinner and a" video” night in
January to view the latest release on Leathercraft. A successful mitt workshop was held at
the Museum with Lauch Harrison sharing his knowledge. We participated in a successful
Christmas sale at the Museum in November along with some Hamilton members. In March,
our Branch provided and attended a CSCL display and promotion at the Woodstock
Recreation and Leisure Fair. Shortly after that, Madeleine Mitchell gave an informative
interview about CSCL to the local Rogers Cable station that was aired numerous times in the
area. We will be hosting the 2006 Biennial Exhibition at the Woodstock Museum in late fall
(to end on the day of the Museum's Christmas sale). Details to follow.

• Toronto Branch Report: This year the members of the Branch have been very busy. Two
new members joined us. We have learned how to make braided -buckskin Bracelets,
Vests, Trappers mitts, Poinsettia broaches, small change purses and everyone has industrially
been working on projects for the Annual. We had a great year end dinner at Al Foss'
place where we got to enjoy his gardens again.
We also successfully hosted a carving workshop lead by Peter Grove. The demonstration
done by Jim Linnell at the Leather Factory in November was an inspiring experience for all
the members from the Toronto Branch who attended. I would also like to thank everyone in
the branch for all their help this year. We are looking forward to another year of
creativity. Submitted by Della Chynoweth
• Norland Leather Craft Society Report for 2005-2006: Norland Brach has been holding their
meetings on Saturdays; meetings are from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Some of our members have a
one hour traveling time to get to the meetings. This seems to work out very well as we do have time to
work on projects at the meeting.
In June 2005 we held a B.B.Q for the members of the Norland Guild at the McHale residents, we all
had a good visit and lots to eat.
September 2005 the meeting was held at the W.I. Hall in Norland where we made cases for different
tools. These cases were made out of scrape leather. This project continued in October where more
cases were constructed.
Four members of the club went to Toronto to take part in the carving workshop that was hosted by
the Toronto Branch
In November we had to move to the Anglican Church hall in Coboconk, at this meeting the tool cases
were on display. Members also prepared a piece of leather for a wallet back; this was to be worked on
prior to the next meeting in February.
Some members traveled to Mississauga to the Tandy Store to see work done by Jim Linnell and his
demonstration on how to do different techniques.
February 2006, we finished up our wallet back, made patterns for a wallet interior, some members got
their interiors cut out and started putting them together.
March 2006, some members still worked on their wallets. We had a demonstration on how to use a
stitching awl. Some members had a half hour to practice carving. C.S.C.L. memberships were collected.
Discussion on how we would set up our table for the Annual, we are leaving that to four of our
members. We had an election of Officers; there are a couple changes from the previous year. We
had two guests at our meeting who are interested in learning leather craft.
April 2006 will be our wind up meeting prior to the Annual. Respectfully submitted by Phyllis
McHale
