President's message

Welcome all to the Canadian Society for Creative Leather Craft Annual General meeting, hoted
by Mississauga. I would like to extend greetings to new members, visitors from out of town,
corporate partners and our membership. I am excited to hear the workshops and the dinner will
be well populated and attendance is higher than last year.

As I began reviewing the year and assembling my thoughts, I had the feeling our craft and the
CSCL are on the path to renewal and growth. The winds of change this way come. What gives
me this hope and lends credence to this thesis? Let me start by choosing some signs close to my
home, we have increased the working members in Hamilton, by one hundred percent in the last
two years. There are returning & new members in Toronto, and Norland. Mississauga runs
weekly meetings and Woodstock hosted a successful lasted box workshop bringing interested
newcomers to our doorstep. Last but not least, the visitors from Ottawa may bring a new chapter
to our society our society in both figurative and substantive way.

The Weston Trophy Competition had entries from every chapter it has been a long while since our
Fellows have had to look at so many articles. We are tool users, we need to use our hands and we
need creative outlets that computers cannot supply. When our craft unites imagination and skill
to produce articles of beauty and function we are elevated in spirit. Those pieces are here today
for us to enjoy.

This Annual will bring about the culmination of more than three years work on the Constitution
and Bylaws, resulting in an effective and more democratic society.

Let’s make our new members feel at home, by showing them our craft, our care and our respect
for the medium.

Yours sincerely,

Lauchlan Harrison, Associate CSC

President

5. Biennial Report – 2006 – Leather 2006 was held September 30 – November 4,
2006 at the Woodstock Museum. Ruth Haig, FCSCL and Carol McLean,
FCSCL, juried the 27 pieces from 8 crafters (4 from Woodstock, 3 from
Hamilton, and 1 from Nova Scotia).
“There have been some bold and daring techniques used, as well as some very
traditional methods employed” said Carol in her judges comments at the
opening on September 30 where awards were presented, followed by lunch and
refreshments, Heritage pieces and previously exhibited pieces were added to
complement the display. CSCL provides this exhibition to recognize excellence
in the craft in the craft and to encourage our members who have not entered to
learn and improve their skills and to promote Leathercraft. Maybe someone
will say, “I’d like to try that”.
Included on the last day was the Museum Craft Sale, which was well attended.
Thank you to all who worked to set up and take down the exhibition, as well as
those who creations were in the excellent display.
By David McPherson, FCSCL
Woodstock Branch President

6. 1st Vice: In 2008 the Biennial will be set up at the Art Gallery in Lindsay. We
have the month of April. This will be just before the annual. Also I am
currently in negotiation with the Loblaws in Lindsay to set up a display one
Saturday in June. If anyone has anything they would like displayed please bring
it to the May Executive meeting. Phyllis McHale

7. 2nd Vice: Last was spent working on the constitution. I guess our hard work paid
off as it has been passed. Barbara Chynoweth

8. Treasurers Report: Please read the Treasurers Report and if you have any
questions I will be happy to answer them. Della Chynoweth moved the
Treasurer’s report be accepted as circulated. Moved by Miles Roberts. Carried.
Respectfully submitted by Della Chynoweth

9. Auditors Report: The financial books for the 2006/2007 years were audited
and found to be in order. Phyllis McHale and Barbara Chynoweth

10. Bulletin2005-2006 Editor's Report - In the past year, our CSCL newsletter
has been published and emailed four times.
The spring issue of the “Canadian Leahercrafter” contained details and
highlights of the 56th Annual hosted by the Hamilton Branch. Feedback after
the event, suggested CSCL members who can’t get our to the Annual’s
appreciate this edition.
The summer issue featured our man in the Mississauga Tandy’s Leather
Factory, Antony W. We also heard the history of the Chynoweth clan and their
contribution to their contributions to the CSCL.

Page 4

see page 4 in the original →

The CSCL Biennial Exhibition “Leather 2006” held in Woodstock
predominated the autumn issue. We also were introduced to Zelikovitz
Leathers in Ottawa, our sustaining member and partner for a new Award.
The winter 2006-07 issue had details of the new CSCL/Zelikovitz Leathercraft
Award.
Technical articles accompany almost all issues along with news items from the
Executive meetings and contribution and contributions from CSCL members.
Many thanks to the Branch Presidents for providing articles and ideas for their
Branch edition
Your feedback about the newsletter and how to make it better, always
appreciated.
Respectfully submitted, Madeleine Mitchell, Editor

11. Membership: New member from the past 2 years will be getting envelopes
with information – this will be done after the constitution is printed. This year
we have 2 members from Ottawa area in attendance. We have 5 new members
this year, one from as far away as B.C. I did not succeed in getting Winnipeg to
join our group. Ottawa is much closer (not 20 some hours by train). I am like a
bull dog guys, when I set the teeth I do not let go. I do hope to get to Ottawa in
the next few months.
Respectfully submitted by Phyllis McHale Membership Chairperson

12. Library:The Library books were resorted and sent out to each branch. I have
been informed that there is around 300.00 to be used to purchase new books to
put in our library. New sign out cards have to be purchased for the books. But
ran out of time to do it the past winter. Suggestions regarding books you would
like to see in the library would be greatly appreciated.
Respectfully submitted, Sandra Roberts

13. Correspondence: Sympathy cards were sent out to family's of members that
passed on over the year. If you know of any one having a special occasion or in
hospital let me know I would be glad to drop them a line.

14. Council of Fellows: The council of Fellow met Sunday April 22, 2007 to
conduct business and jury applications for Associate, Fellow standings and
branch entries for the Weston Trophy. The results of that meeting will be made
know today.
It is clear that a major effort needs to be put forth to attract more Associate
members, so that they can later work toward Fellow standing. Pages showing
the requirements are available along with application forms at the registration
desk. Many of you have developed your leathercrafting skills. Competition and
evaluation provide encouragement to improve those skills and produce excellent

pieces of Leathercraft. Not everyone becomes proficient in every aspect of the
craft but it is worth the effort to try some.
Let’s “Associate” in 2008 (pronounced twenty-oh-eight to make it rhyme.)

t use for various projects, poinsettia flowers and pins, miniature furniture, video
night and two programmes from that DVD on Making Leather Jewellery with
Rene Berends – making a leather stone and braided bracelets.
The branch participated in the Woodstock Recreation and Leisure Fair to
provide exposure for the Guild. Nancy Durham repeated her lasted box

We are also please to welcome Bruce white back to the Toronto Branch and the
CSCL.
Our first meeting in September was more of a getting organized meeting and
planning the rest of the year. We decided that for our October and November
meeting we would work on making boxes and Bruce brought in several styles
and we picked which style we wanted to make.
For our December meeting Roselle Wallace instructed us on making Christmas
tree pins.
At the January meeting we worked on completing items that we had on the go,
in February we practised carving and in March we started working on
constructing a book cover with Bruce White leading the group and we
continued working on the book cover at our April meeting.
Respectfully submitted
Keven Magura, Secretary, Toronto Branch.

20. Norland Leather Craft Society Report for 2005-2006:The Norland branch
moved their meeting location to the Old Norland School Hall in Norland
starting in September 2006, this gives us more room for our expanding group.
We hold our meetings on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. as some of our
members have to travel a distance to get to the meetings and by having longer
meetings and by having longer meetings we can get more done.
For our first two meetings we learned how to make a vest with Darlene Fry
instructing us on what to do. During the November meeting we made Christmas
Decorations and we are pleased to say that there where some little hands that
where having fun making decorations also. We also had a Christmas party as
we do not have a meeting in December. Each meeting we usually have some
little hands in attendance that we are hoping someday will be the Leather
Crafters of the future.
Beginning the 2007 year off we spent the first two meetings learning how to
make a box with Della Chynoweth and Phyllis McHale instructing. For our
March and April meetings we worked on finishing up projects and preparing
items for the convention.
Norland will be hosting the Biennial in 2008 and Phyllis McHale has been
working with the Library in Lindsay who will be hosting this event. We have
also started working on planning the 2008 Annual.
We are happy to report that we have acquired a new member in 2007 but we are
also sorry to say that we have lost two members Jack and Marion Simm who
have decided not to renew their membership due to declining health.
Respectfully submitted by Barbara Chynoweth, Secretary

21. Mississauga Branch Report: We meet at the Tandy Leather Factory with our
Saturday Group. This past year we have worked on Book binders, mystery belts
and the Annual. We were sorry to loose long time member Don McLeod. We
finally managed to sort out our singing at the bank after the lose of Kevin
Armstrong.
