Volume XV No. 3 Spring, 1966

1966 ANNUAL C.S.C.L. SALE

Reported by Clara Cavanagh

The twelfth annual Leathercraft sale of the C.S.C.L. members was held in the gallery of the Canadian Handicraft Guild Shop, 77 Bloor St. W., Toronto from Nov. 2 - Nov. 5.

A letter was sent out early in October reminding all members of the sale, asking them to have their articles ready on time, explaining how to make out their own entry forms and tag their articles correctly and if possible, to volunteer their help.

Fifteen hundred printed invitations were mailed or distributed from appropriate shops. Pamphlets were handed out at the C.N.E. Arts, Crafts and Hobby booth, mentioning the date of our C.S.C.L. sale. Publicity was given with accompanying pictures in the Globe and Mail and received mention in the Toronto Telegram.

All articles were checked and screened the day before the sale and set up the morning of the sale. The window display was attractively set up by Betty Smith of the Guild shop.

There was a fair selection of articles, of good workmanship and design. A total of 1,053 articles were sent in from 35 members. Gross receipts totaled $1,178.77 from the sale of 535 articles. Our general pleas for smaller articles might have added to the value of the sale and improved the over-all display.

The sale was managed by members from Barrie, Hamilton and Toronto branches taking full responsibility for one day each. After the sale closed Saturday, twelve of our working members spent an enjoyable dinner together then returned to the Guild shop to check off unsold articles and repack them to return to their owners.

I would like to thank everyone who helped, for their cooperation and willingness to help in making our 1966 sale such a happy one as well as a successful sale, A special thank you to Cecil Roebuck who cheerfully picked up the cash each evening, and Viola Harris who made it possible for us to return to the shop to finish up the work, rather than the confusion of moving everything out at closing time or having to return another day.

As we enter 1967 Centennial Year I feel we should make a special effort, to create some outstanding leather articles, for our thirteenth C.S.C.L. sale, next fall.

The main purpose of this booth was to have a display and demonstrate leathercraft with a second thought to sell leather articles. A display was set up by the exhibition convenor and some helpers.

Mrs. Irva Ford scheduled a plan by which members from the Toronto, London, Hamilton and Barrie branches demonstrated and sold articles daily.

Six hundred and five articles were listed for sale from 86 members. Gross receipts totalled $1,1191.35 from the sale of 455 articles,

It was agreed that everyone enjoyed their day or days in the booth either demonstrating or selling.
