Jean Newton

← People of the Society · on record 1952–1979

Everything the Society’s own records say of Jean Newton — the offices held, the standings conferred, and the awards won — gathered on one page. Where the records are silent, so is this one.

In memoriam · Christmas Eve, 24 December (the newsletter gives no year; the notice appears in the Winter 1985 issue, which follows Fall 1985 in the same volume, so most probably 1985)

One of the Toronto Branch’s original members — an Associate of the Society from 1954 and a Fellow from 1957 (Spring 1957 newsletter, p. 11) — and, over the years, a presenter at Annual Meetings of some of its senior honours, including Reta Larmour’s Honorary Life Fellow Membership in 1965 and Bea Austin’s Life Membership. The Winter 1985 In Memoriam notice (p. 4) is hand-written and hard to read ("memhenrns" for members, "Baanch" for Branch), but the name itself is clear. The same short notice extends sympathy, not a further death, to May Corbett on the loss of her husband and to Gladys Riddell on the death of her aunt, Dorenda Durey — bereavements, not members.

From Winter 1985–86, page 4.

Certification

  • Associate of the CSCL 1954
  • Fellow of the CSCL 1957
The election notice prints the town as “Toronto”.

One of the Toronto Branch's original members, she was its Vice-President at its founding in 1952. An Associate from 1954, she became the Society's President from 1956 to 1957 and a Fellow from 1957. Her work won prizes at the Canadian Handicrafts Guild competition and the Canadian National Exhibition through the 1950s and 1960s. She presented Reta Larmour's Honorary Life Fellow Membership in 1965. Two of her pieces were chosen for “Ontario Crafts – Leather Today”, the Society’s Centennial travelling exhibition: a shoe horn and a carved belt; the Canadian Guild of Crafts (Ontario) selected the articles, and the exhibition opened at the Guild Shop on 2 October 1967 and was to travel across Canada during 1968. She was made an Honourary Life Member in 1979, and presented Bea Austin's Life Membership in 1983.
