Cecil Roebuck

← People of the Society · on record 1954–1973

Everything the Society’s own records say of Cecil Roebuck — the offices held, the standings conferred, and the awards won — gathered on one page. Where the records are silent, so is this one.

In memoriam · reported Fall 1973

Of Toronto. Made an Honourary Associate of the Society in 1962 — "while Cecil is not a craftsman, he has" served it long — and remembered again in the Spring 1975 newsletter's account of the Society's honours. The Fall 1973 newsletter recorded his death with that of Eleanor Coutts of Barrie: "We mourn the passing of two of our members... Our sympathies go out to their respective families." No date of death is given.

Certification

  • Honorary Associate of the CSCL 1962

Long the Society's Treasurer and a past Chairman and later President of the Toronto Branch, he was made an Honorary Associate in 1962 in recognition of his service to the Society — the Society's own citation noting that, unlike its ordinary Associates, he was not himself a craftsman. He died in 1973, of Toronto.

From 40th Annual Meeting 1990 — programme, Elmhurst Inn, Ingersoll, page 12.

Honours

  • Honorary Associate 1962
Announced by the Board of Selection alongside the year's new Fellows and Associates. The citation says plainly that he is not a craftsman: "he has given many long years of service to our Society" — a past Chairman of Toronto Branch and at that time its Treasurer as well as Treasurer of the C.S.C.L., Chairman of the Second International Assembly held in Toronto, and long a member of the Executive. "Honorary Associates are awarded very sparingly and we are happy to bestow this on Cecil as a token of our appreciation of his service to us." His wife Sadie Roebuck was raised to Fellow in the same announcement. Found, not settled: the Society’s own 25th-anniversary retrospective (Spring 1975 newsletter, p7) dates this Honorary Associate membership to 1963, a year later than this contemporary announcement; the contemporary source is followed here.
