ANNUAL MAY 3, 4, 5th, 1991
The Hamilton Branch of the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft hosted the Annual at the Beacon Motor Inn, Jordan Station, Ontario. The view from the display room overlooked Lake Ontario and on Friday night we were observed a beautiful sunset.
Friday evening guild members set up display tables in the Shore room. Later, the Fellows judged the leather work for Craftsman and Salon ribbons. Lois MacPherson's hands-on demonstration on making bracelets, held in the hospitality room, was a success with a dozen participants plus several watching.
Early Saturday, Dave McPherson and Gladys Riddell, F.C.S.C.L. were on the registration desk. There were 53 members registered for the day and 65 for the banquet. Tickets were sold for the draw tables. Gladys Riddell's daughter made a ceramic tea set, which was donated to the guild. Johnson Products donated gift packs for the draw table.
Muriel McKnight extended a welcome to everyone. Bill and Dottie Reis of the Leather Crafters Journal (owner/publisher) were guests at this years' Annual. Don Macleod, C.S.C.L. President, then read the President's Message, thanking the Executive for a job well-done. Madeleine Mitchell reported an opening for Treasurer and Corresponding Secretary. Lea Love was elected the new Treasurer and was passed by the membership.
Fred Brown, F.C.S.C.L. awarded the designation of Associate membership to David McPherson of the Hamilton Branch, receiving the Zalitiz pin for an average of 81.7%.
After reading the History of the Weston Trophy, Bill Whittingham presented the Trophy to Hamilton Branch year's winners with 85.7%. Branch President, Betsy Rennie, F.C.S.C.L accepted the Trophy and ribbons were given to Sharon Beasley, Ruth Haig, Muriel McKnight, David McPherson, and Betsy Rennie. The critiques on the Weston Trophy entries from all the branches was read by Betsy Rennie and assisted by Hilda Newitt.
Joyce Scruton was pleased to present Ruth Haig, F.C.S.C.L. with a Life Membership. Ruth received her Associate in 1965 and her Fellows in 1985. She has served many years on the Executive Council and three years as President.
Following lunch, Betsy Rennie demonstrated "Pastels on Leather" while Bruce White, Toronto Branch, demonstrated "Stacked Leather Boxes". While everyone was enjoying a coffee or tea break, the draw prizes were drawn. Next, Madeleine Mitchell, Woodstock Branch, demonstrated "One Piece Wallets" and Bill Whittingham,
Mississauga Branch, had a hands-on demonstration with "Colour Dye and Dry Brush" techniques. Leather and tool sales for members completed the afternoon agenda.
The Beacon Motor Inn provided a wonderful buffet dinner in the Sands Room. Lorna Robson introduced the guest speaker, Laura Dodson who spoke on the current environmental state of the Niagara River. After finishing her talk, Laura drank her glass of water. Don Macleod then introduced Bill Reis from the Leather Crafters Journal. Mr. Reis gave a short and humorous talk on his trials about the Magazine and hopes to have our support. Then Fred Brown and Betsy Rennie, two members from the Council of Fellows presented 35 Craftsman and 14 Salon Ribbons to the following members:

Emma Windatt, Norland Branch came down to the Hospitality Room and did a Dance and a recited her famous Cat Poem that she wrote herself.
On Sunday morning about 20 members gathered to go on a Free Wine Tour at the Vineland Estates. The members enjoyed the tour and free wine. Vineland Estates is halfway up the Escarpment giving a beautiful view looking out to Lake Ontario.
The 41st Annual was a great success and I would like to thank Dave and Dorothy McPherson, and the rest of the Hamilton Branch for doing a wonderful job! Thank you everyone for coming to this year’s Annual.
Respectfully Submitted,
Betsy Rennie, F.C.S.C.L
President, Hamilton Branch.

CRITIQUES OF WESTON TROPHY PIECES
The judges commented on the very high quality of work submitted for the Weston Trophy entries this year. The critiques are as follows:
HAMILTON has the highest average of 85.7%
BOOK BANK by Sharon Beasley got 96.5%. This is an absolute perfect piece of work. Excellent choice of leathers and beautifully constructed. A very unique idea.
RED BOX by Ruth Haig got 88%. The box is a pleasing colour. The seam should be skived to a feather edge. The handle is an outstanding feature and makes the box easy to open.
RANGER BELT by Muriel McKnight got 84%. A handsome belt suitable for dressy wear. The colouring is professionally done. The simulated stitching give the belt a finished look.
BLUE BOX by Dave McPherson got 83%. The edge on this box is very well skived. The lid is not an absolute fit. The padding enhances the appearance.
FANNY BAG by Betsy Rennie got 77%. The colouring is naturally subdued and enhances the berry pattern. The leather is a bit to stiff for this type of bag. Suggest putting a tab on the zippered ends. The thread is too light-weight.
MISSISSAUGA has an average of 83.9%.
BELT by Cliff McTavish got 94.5% The overall workmanship on this belt is excellent and the stitching is beautifully done. The original design on the buckle is outstanding.
NAPKIN HOLDER by Bill Whittingham got 84%. The napkin holder has very attractive colouring. The stitching is well done. A very nice piece of work.
JEWELLERY SET by Lois MacPherson got 81%. The set is very well made. The colour combination is very attractive. The back has a nice smooth finish.
PICTURE FRAME by Lea Love got 80%. The frame has overall good workmanship. The corners need more attention. The oval is very neat.
TRAY WITH LIGHT by Don Macleod got 80%. The combination of putting a light in the leg and to have it shine through the agate is cleverly designed. The back needs more work to make it smooth.
TORONTO has an average of 81.1%.
TRAY WITH BOXES by Bruce White got 88.5% The design is great. The joins need more work to make them more invisible. The lids do not fit snug. It is a very good colour job.
LAMP by Jack Meharg got 87% A terrific idea of stacked leather. The edges are not polished enough.
Page 5 — New Associate - David McPherson, Hamilton Branch; Drawings by Kay Cloughley, ACSCL
BROWN TRAY by Jessie Little got 83%. This is an outstanding design on an elegant piece of work.
PHOTO ALBUM by Fred Brown got 82% A lovely piece of work. The front corner is not quite squared.
RED BOX by Cal Lucas got 65%. The butterfly is a nice decoration and well done. More skiving should be done on the joins and the colouring could be applied better. There are a lot of fingernail marks on it.
WOODSTOCK has an average of 80.9%.
RANGER BELT by Nancy Durham got 90.5% An elegant looking belt with snakeskin underlay. Very nicely stitched.
MATEUS BOTTLE by Loreen Manual got 86% The bull rushes stand out well on this bottle. A very pleasing decoration and a very nice dye Job.
BLUE BOX by Madeleine Mitchell got 81%. The onlay and interior is excellently sponge-dyed. A few construction details need more work.
BOOK ENDS by Buela Reynolds got 81%. Beautiful. Very nicely done and good workmanship. The gold is a nice touch.
The name is printed "Buela" here and "Beula" elsewhere in the Society's papers; kept exactly as printed.
DAVID McPHERSON has had an interest in leather since he's been a youth. He enjoyed designing his own tools using nail heads. David has been a member of the Hamilton Branch since 1980. He is an active member as branch Librarian, membership, and also treasurer for several years. He has demonstrated his techniques for the Hamilton Branch, at the Annual, and also day workshops for the C.S.C.L. David has taken courses at the Haliburton School of Fine Arts for several summers. WHAT ARE SENIORS WORTH?
Remember, old folks are worth a fortune — with silver in their hair, gold in the teeth, stones in their kidneys, lead in their feet, and gas in their stomachs. I have become a little older since I saw you last and a few changes have come into my life - frankly, I have become a frivolous old gal.
I am seeing five gentlemen every day. As soon as I wake up, WILL POWER helps me get out of bed. Then I go to see JOHN. Next, CHARLIE HORSE comes along and when he is here he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves, ARTHUR RITIS shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn't like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day, I'm really tired and glad to go to bed with BEN GAY. WHAT A LIFE! Oh yes, I'm also flirting with AL ZYMER.
P.S. The preacher came to call the other day. He said that at my age I should be thinking about the hereafter. I told him, "Oh, I do, all the time; No matter where I am. in the parlour, upstairs, in the kitchen, or down in the basement, I ask myslef - now what am I here after?
The original prints "myslef", kept exactly as printed.
AT THE MAY EXECUTIVE MEETING, THE COUNCIL VOTED ON CHANGING THE SIZE OF THE BULLETIN TO A REGULAR FULL SIZE SHEET OF PAPER. THIS WILL SAVE ON COSTS OF PRINTING ( REDUCING AND BINDERY).
IT WAS MENTIONED THAT THE MEMBERS COULD MAKE THEIR OWN BINDER TO PUT THE Canadian Leathercraft
