"Canadian Leathercraft" has a new Editor

Hello CSCL Members! I'm Madeleine Mitchell, your new editor of the "Canadian Leathercraft". At the recent 2003 Annual General Meeting, the Bulletin became my newest challenge! I've just retired from my job of over 32 years and now I'll attempt to keep up the standards of the previous editors — Don Macleod and Kevin Armstrong.

Don very generously passed on his bulletin resources, and addresses, and I'm sure I heard a sigh of relief from Kevin at our May Executive Council meeting. Thanks guys for a job Well Done!

This bulletin for Spring 2003 mostly includes Annual Weekend details — especially for those of you who couldn't attend. You'll also find Al Foss' Video List.

I hope to make a few changes in upcoming bulletins, so watch closely and let me know how I'm doing.

If you have questions or comments for CSCL or would like to contribute an article, here's how to contact me.

— It's more fun to colour outside the lines.
— Make up the rules as you go along.
— It doesn't matter who started it.
— Ask for sprinkles.
— If the horse you're drawing looks more like a dog, make it a dog.
— Save a place in line for your friends.

53rd Annual Weekend Report

April 25, 26, 27, 2003
Lindsay, Ontario

It was a sunny Friday afternoon in April as people started to arrive at the Lindsay Inn in Lindsay for the 53rd Annual Weekend of the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft.

Phyllis McHale and her team of Marion Sim, Gloria Cousins, and Della Chynoweth eagerly awaited the members from Mississauga, Woodstock, Toronto, Hamilton, and Members-at-Large to arrive. The Registration Table was a hive of activity with members greeting each other and picking up their denim "goody" bags made by Dee MacLeod of Norland.

The Friday evening activities included registering for the weekend and setting up the various table displays — Branches, Weston Trophy, Members-at-Large, Associate, Fellow, and the popular Draw table.

Once the judging of the table articles by Fellow and Associate members began, the rest of the members took to the demonstration put on by Paul Kitchener of the Mississauga Branch. Paul is an accomplished leathercrafter who demonstrated carving techniques that made the hawk picture he was working on come alive. Several CSCL members tried their hand at figure carving under Paul's guidance.

Social hour included refreshments and renewing friendships and entertainment from a mysterious lady who sang and danced and batted her long eyelashes.

On Saturday morning, about 30 CSCL members visited and viewed the table displays, and assembled for the upcoming meeting. Phyllis McHale, President of CSCL, conducted the 53rd Annual General Meeting with the help of CSCL Executive members. Reports were presented and approved. (Full Meeting Minutes enclosed in this Bulletin.) The General Membership approved a fee increase to $25.00 per year, per member, starting April 1, 2004.

The slate of Executive Council for 2003-2004 was presented and approved by the membership. (Enclosed with this bulletin.)

Highlights of the meeting included the granting of Associate standing and the awarding of the Zalitis Pin to Lauchlan Harrison of the Hamilton Branch. Then Sean Dalgetty, from Hamilton too, received his Fellow standing. The presentation of the Weston Trophy to the Hamilton Branch topped off a great Annual Meeting for the Hamilton Branch. Ribbons and the Weston Trophy were presented to Peter Grove and the talented Hamilton members. Critiques of the articles for Associate, Fellow, and Weston Trophy entries followed. CSCL is proud to have so many skilled and creative members.

Page 4

see page 4 in the original →

An addition to the agenda was the recognition of 6 CSCL members as recipients of the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for their long-time commitment to CSCL. Dorothy McPherson called upon several CSCL members to read the biographies of the recipients. New OVSA candidates were Laura Bush, MAL, Jack Meharg, Toronto, Madeleine Mitchell, Woodstock, Della Chynoweth, Toronto & Norland, Emma Windatt, Norland, and Betsy Rennie, FCSCL, Hamilton.

The Norland Branch won the "Best Branch Display" for their colourful table.

At the conclusion of the business meeting, Della Chynoweth, President of the Toronto Branch, invited CSCL to attend the 2004 Annual Weekend, to be hosted by Toronto Branch, but likely to be held at this year's location of the Lindsay Inn, Lindsay.

The afternoon was taken up with demonstrations where CSCL members generously shared their expertise. The program included a "Picture Frame" workshop with Lauch Harrison and the combined talents of Carol McLean FCSCL and Dorothy McPherson demonstrating "Jewellry Making". Later in the afternoon, Lauch continued the Frame workshop and David McPherson demonstrated his unique "Pin" design.

The afternoon passed quickly with draws and refreshments and leather sales. The Norland group was always around providing assistance and friendly smiles.

A lovely Banquet Meal Saturday evening followed and was a combination of CSCL's 53rd Annual and the 25th Anniversary of the Norland Branch. Sandra Roberts MC'd the evening and introduced several special guests that were attending from the Norland area, including Councilman Andy Luff and his wife representing the City of Kawartha Lakes for the Norland area, and Charter Members of the Norland Branch — Peggy Weaver and Grace Graham and their spouses.

Our entertainment for the evening was Denis Grignon, a laid-back country boy who reminisced about his French Canadian life in Eastern Ontario. His good humour and warm delivery made all glad that they had attended. Not to be outdone, the mysterious lady from Friday night appeared and danced and sang. Rumour has it she's known as "EW" in Norland circles.

[Printed exactly so: the nickname of the lady who appeared on the Friday night is given in quotation marks as "EW", with no further explanation on the page.]

Della Chynoweth read the answers to the CSCL quiz held earlier in the day and congratulated David McPherson, ACSCL, on the highest score!

The presentation of Craftsman, Salon, and other CSCL Awards followed. The audience graciously acknowledged our many skilled, creative members.

Sunday morning allowed CSCL members a final opportunity to be inspired by two of our Fellows — Peter Grove created "Roses" from leather while Bill Whittingham recreated a "Sliding Key Case" from an early pattern. As the table displays were taken down for another year, CSCL members enjoyed the memories of the 53rd CSCL Annual Weekend in Lindsay, Ontario.

CSCL Welcomes our newest Associate and Fellow!

Congratulations to Lauchlan Harrison of the Hamilton Branch for receiving his Associate Standing and the Zalitis Pin for achieving greater than 80% average. His pieces included a Black Stitched Satchel, Dyed Belt, Laced Picture Frame, and Trapper's Mitts.

Lauch's Average: 82.2%

Sean Dalgetty also, of the Hamilton Branch, wowed the Council of Fellows with his outstanding Fellow articles! His pieces included a Carved Rifle Case, a Moulded and Stitched Vase, "Peter's" Swivel Knife Case, and the dramatic "Fox" Mask.

Sean's Average: 86.3%

Weston Trophy Comments

from CSCL Council of Fellows

Hamilton Guild:

Saddle Bags — This is a very functional piece with beautiful edges and stitching. The stamped decoration is paired nicely with the snakeskin underlay. There is a simple elegance to this piece.

Hinged Box — This is a pleasant box to look at with a good dye job. The inset on the inside of the lid is a good idea but it should be a solid piece of leather to avoid the gap in the seam. The bottom of the box needs more finishing work, or a single piece of leather should be custom fit to cover the entire bottom of the box. A tried and tested traditional CSCL project.

Cushion — This decorative cushion is an interesting combination of three different leather textures. The carving and lacing are well done but we feel there should be some redesigning where the four carved sections meet. As it stands at the moment, those joining points are weaknesses that may not stand the test of time.

Hummingbird Picture — The choice of design is well balanced. The cove dye is a bit too thick and there is a small slip. The carving could be deeper to give a more three-dimensional effect. Overall, this is a pleasing piece to look at.

Hamilton's overall average was 75%

Woodstock Guild:

Clock — This is an interesting idea that must have been fun to design. The edges are rough in spots and need more work with a bone folder. The gears are cut out and balanced very nicely, but may benefit from the use of different textures or shading to separate one gear from another. There is a sense of monotone, perhaps due to the dark colouration, that takes away from the excitement of this piece. The concept behind this clock is a good one.

Suede Bag — There are a lot of interesting design features in this bag but the suede used is a little too light for this project and may result in stretching, especially the strap. The seam wrinkles slightly at the bottom, most likely because the front and back pieces of the bag do not match perfectly. There is too much reliance on glue for the rolled edges; they should be reinforced with stitching to ensure they stay in place with repeated use. The overall design is conducive to a fashion bag, but the narrower top may make it difficult to get things in and out of the bag while on the shoulder. The rolled button closure and braiding are nice design touches.

Mission Grain Ticket and Passport Holder — The tab/tongue closure works well on this piece. The leather is too stiff and is especially too thick in the gusset area for this item to open and close easily. The maple leaf tooling adds some interest to the overall appearance.

[Printed exactly so: the Weston Trophy entry list on the preceding page names this Woodstock entry "Passport Wallet- Jean Pickering", but the Council of Fellows' own comment heading here reads "Mission Grain Ticket and Passport Holder" — likely the item's fuller descriptive name. Kept as printed.]

Pencil Cup — This is a very functional piece with a simple and clean design. The edges are well done and it sits quite flatly on the desk. This pencil cup has a nice feel to it in the hand and has a nice warm glow.

Woodstock's overall average was 71.6%

53rd Annual General Meeting Minutes

Saturday, April 26, 2003
Lindsay Inn, Lindsay, Ontario

Those in Attendance: Executive Members — Phyllis McHale (President), Madeleine Mitchell (Recording Secretary), Al Foss, Della Chynoweth, Nancy Durham, Peter Grove, Heather Atkinson, Dorothy & David McPherson, Betsy Rennie, Bill Whittingham, Kevin Armstrong. Plus General Membership: Total membership present — about 35.

1. Call to Order: Phyllis McHale welcomed everyone and called the 53rd Annual General Meeting to order at 10:00am.

Phyllis called on Sandra Roberts to welcome everybody to Norland and to announce that in addition to the Annual weekend, Norland would be celebrating their 25th Anniversary as a Branch of CSCL. She also advised all to wear their identification badges or risk being fined 25 cents, per offence, by the "Badge Police", aka Della Chynoweth. The Badges are to be collected at the end of the weekend to be passed on to the next Annual committee.

Sandra also discussed the "kits" that will be available at the Demonstrations for purchase. It is hoped each Branch will purchase kits and take them back for demonstrations at Branch meetings.

Announcement of a Fall Workshop to be held Saturday, September 20, 2003 at the Norland Community Hall. Using the leather from Jessie Little FCSCL, the workshop will provide members with an opportunity to learn techniques of leather jewelry and novelty pins. Each member attending this year's Annual received a package of leather cutouts in their grab bags.

Della Chynoweth announced that there would be a Special Table at the 2004 Annual for those pieces that are completed from the grab bags. Please sign up for the Workshop. Details will follow in the Bulletin.

2. Approval of previous minutes (April 20, 2002): Madeleine Mitchell corrected an unfortunate error in the past minutes. Jessie Little FCSCL is alive and well at a rest home in Orillia. The Norland folks have visited Jessie in the past few months.

What was that quote from Mark Twain? "The report of my passing was greatly exaggerated." Sorry Jessie!

Motion: Madeleine Mitchell moved the acceptance of the corrected minutes from April 20, 2002 of the 52nd Annual General Meeting. Seconded by Carol McLean FCSCL. CARRIED.

3. Business arising from previous minutes:

a. Notice of Motion about Membership Fee increase in 2004: Previous to this year's Annual, Phyllis McHale sent out letters to all members re the suggested fee increase with reasons why it is necessary.

Motion: Larry Atkinson moved that the CSCL Membership Fee be increased to $25.00 per member per year starting April 1, 2004. Seconded by Nancy Durham ACSCL. CARRIED.

b. Number of Articles required for a Weston Trophy Entry: Motion: Moved by Peter Grove FCSCL that the Weston Trophy entry by a Branch continue to be 4 (four) articles at the 2004 Annual. This motion to be reviewed annually. Seconded by Nancy Durham ACSCL. CARRIED.

4. Annual Reports:

Page 9

see page 9 in the original →

a. President's Report: Phyllis McHale presented her report noting that the Annual weekend is both an interesting and learning event as well as an opportunity to meet friends. Phyllis encouraged those who have any information about the past history of disbanded CSCL Branches to send Phyllis the information so that it can be published in a Bulletin. Phyllis thanked Don MacLeod and Kevin Armstrong for their years as Bulletin editors. "You did a great job guys." Phyllis also noted that CSCL had the support of many organizations/businesses and individuals as sponsors of this year's Annual. The complete list followed her report.

b. Membership: Bill Whittingham FCSCL discussed CSCL's falling membership numbers. Only 63 (April 1, 2002 to March 31, 2003). Bill encouraged members to be active in their Branches and with the Guild through articles and tips and "nuggets" of information to the Bulletin. Workshops are encouraged to get the membership involved. Bill added that he will be publishing a new Membership List in June.

Some discussion followed Bill's report. It was mentioned that Phyllis McHale has been very active in the last year in trying to get new members. She travelled to Winnipeg to meet with a group of leathercrafters that may start a new Branch. She has sent out personal letters to all the Members-at-Large to find out their needs and requests from CSCL. She even called our MAL Warren Cummins in the Northwest Territories. Peter Grove has also worked hard at enticing new members through classes in his shop.

A question arose about the Website, which has hit a few snags, but the new Executive will look at it again.

Suggestion also that Branch Meetings and their programs be advertised in the Bulletin for anyone — including MAL's — to attend. New editor noted.

c. Archivist Report: Kevin Armstrong's report is in the Annual Reports.

d. Library Report: Al Foss' report is enclosed in the Annual Report. Al will be providing some review material to the Bulletin for publication as well as a Video List (videos have proved to be very popular).

e. Bulletin Report: No report available due to Don MacLeod's illness. Word has it he's on the road to recovery! Way to go Don!

f. Council of Fellows Report: Bill Whittingham FCSCL reported that the planned April 5th, 2003 meeting was postponed due to weather. Bill also noted that when judging did occur, our newest Fellow 2002, Peter Grove, attended.

g. Branch Reports: All five Branches — Norland, Mississauga, Hamilton, Toronto, and Woodstock — provided reports of their past year events.

h. Treasurer's Report: Kevin Armstrong presented his report and it is enclosed at the end of these minutes. Kevin mentioned that he would like to decrease the number of accounts. To be discussed at the next Executive Meeting. Several outstanding bills were paid on the following motions.

Motion: Heather Atkinson moved that her bill for printing Annual reports be paid. Seconded by Larry Atkinson. CARRIED.

Motion: Bill Whittingham FCSCL moved that his bill for membership expenses be paid. Seconded by Larry Atkinson. CARRIED.

Motion: Peter Grove FCSCL moved that his expenses for Weston Trophy engraving be paid. Seconded by Heather Atkinson. CARRIED.

Motion: Bill Whittingham FCSCL moved that Dorothy Muma FCSCL be paid $100 for the use of her house for judging. Seconded by Peter Grove FCSCL. CARRIED.

i. Nominations Committee Report: Nancy Durham ACSCL presented the new Slate of Officers of CSCL for 2003-2004. The full report follows these minutes.

Motion: Marion Kehoe moved that all reports as printed or presented be accepted. Seconded by Peter Grove FCSCL. CARRIED.

5. New Business:

a. Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for 2003: Dorothy McPherson has organized the biographies for six CSCL members and submitted them to the Provincial Government. To date CSCL has submitted 24 members. The date of the official presentations has not yet been announced.
