The Society's professional stamps

← The Society · the numbered brass stamps of the Society's Associates and Fellows, and the register of who held them, kept to May 2012

Every member who qualified as an Associate or a Fellow was entitled, by the Society's By-Laws, to a diploma and “the use of a professional stamp issued by the Society”. The stamp is a small brass die cut with the Society's maple-leaf CSCL monogram, set in a turned wooden handle with its number cut into the wood. The Society kept a register of who held each number, and the copy brought up to date in May 2012 survives.

How the stamps were made

Toronto Stamp & Stencil Works Limited, “Manufacturers of Marking Devices”, of 137 Church Street, Toronto, made them. Its packing slip of May 7, 1957 sends the Society “12 Brass stamps as per your sample returned”; a second slip, dated in April 1958 and signed Robert Muma, records “26 Brass Stamps” and “1 Sample”. The register dates the first issues to 1956, a year before the earlier slip. Both dates are given here as the papers give them.

The register, May 2012

The register runs from I to a last number typed “XLX”, fifty in all. 54 issues are written against the first forty-five; eight numbers were issued twice or more as stamps came back. Two stamps came back broken, No. XXVII in 1978 and No. XXXVIII in 2008. In May 2012 12 numbers were marked available: IX, XI, XVI, XXXII, XXXV, XL, XLIII, XLVI, XLVII, XLVIII, XLIX, XLX. Names and spellings are as the register prints them. The third column gives the name each holder is filed under in this archive and links to that member's page; “not settled” means the archive cannot yet say who is meant.

Stamp No. IX

No. IX was issued in 1956 to “R K Larmour and Rita” and came back in 1973; in May 2012 it was one of the numbers marked available. It was later given to Eugene Pik, and it is the stamp in the first two photographs above.

A typed sheet headed “CSCL Professional Stamp” and “Up to date May 2012”, listing numbers I to XLX with names, dates, fees, returns and availability.
The register as kept on paper, May 2012.

Written from the Society's own register, “CSCL Professional Stamp, Up to date May 2012”, which is in the Document Archive (Register of professional stamps, May 2012), from the maker's two packing slips of 1957 and 1958, and from the By-Laws as revised in May 2016, Article II, Sec. 1(e). The fees the register records are left out of the table above; they are on the register itself.
