President's Message

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the 61st Annual. I hope everyone has a good time, meets new people and learns much.

With the 2010 Biennial behind us we are already looking towards the 2012 Biennial and starting to plan, we are looking at adding several more awards for this event.

The last 6 months have been very busy as I retired from the work force and also moved. On a sadder note mother, Hilda Chynoweth's younger sister Peggy Saunders, who many of you met at the Banquets when the Norland and Toronto Branches held their Annuals in Lindsay, passed away in March, she was 96 years young.

I am hoping that we can get some workshops going this coming year and I am sure that Madeleine or Lauch would appreciate any suggestions or help you may want to give.

Once again welcome and may the tools work with you. Barbara www.canadianleathercraft.org

Reports

President's Annual Report: Phyllis McHale

It seems like it was only a couple months ago since I was writing a report. I feel as if I have held this position in name only this past two years, so I would like to thank the rest of the group for keeping things going -- especially Barbara Chynoweth for taking the meetings I was not able to attend,

Page 4

see page 4 in the original →

It is nice to see we do have some more awards, I hope it will create more variety on the tables. This may make it easier on the judges too as it will cut out overlap of articles. Thank you for all the work the members have done to get the new categories set up with all the criteria needed for each one.

It has been a fruitful year, also a big Thank you to all the members who have worked on the Biennial. It has been a big job -- I hope we will have a good turnout for the opening ceremonies.

Since our last Annual we have lost some of our older members. I am sure they will be remembered for many years to come by present day members.

I hope everyone enjoys the Annual and all the best.

Biennial Report 2010

Submitted by Dorothy McPherson, Biennial Liaison

Ontario Crafts Council has been great to work with in setting up this exhibition -- especially Janna Hiemstra, Gallery Co-ordinator, who responded to well over 100 queries by email or phone that I sent her during the past 2 ½ years that it will have taken to set this up. Some of the things we discussed included the date, contract, signage such as the banner that will hang on the gallery wall, refreshments, parking, promotional bookmark, display cabinets, Artist Statement, Exhibition Opening, and Sales with the OCC's usual consignment 60/40 arrangement with the artist receiving 60%. When the OCC holds these shows they typically require that any sales go through the gallery. The OCC likes most of the work to be for sale, and if it isn't, that the artist is open to taking commissions.

PARKING: There is street parking in front of the OCC and parking along the side streets, as well as a paid parking lot north on Ossington.

GALLERY FACILITIES: Washrooms are in basement and there is no handrail on those stairs.

An Art Committee was formed at the 2009 Annual convention and functioned until September when its report was submitted at the CSCL September executive meeting. Because OCC required a theme for the exhibition the Art Committee decided on LEATHER 2010: CONTAINMENT, which seemed appropriate since CSCL turns out such lovely leather boxes.

Thank you, 2009 Art Committee members.

OCC requires that an Artist Statement accompany each entry as the Statements are used for promotional purposes. To assist artists with the preparation of the Artist Statement I wrote Preparing Your Biennial 2010 Paperwork article that appeared in Canadian Leathercraft in November.

Check out magazine newsstands for the OCC magazine the STUDIO (April issue) that contains the Biennial ad. Paul Kitchener, Barry Taylor, David McPherson and I worked on the ad that is displayed in the magazine on the Registration Table this week-end. Incorporated in the advertising package is an exhibition blurb in another CSCL advertising medium.

For publicity and promotion purposes I'm sending the OCC a required overview of the show after CSCL judges finish the Biennial judging this week-end.

CSCL's 2010 biennial exhibition opens in 3 months on Thursday, August 26 (5:30 pm-8:30) and runs until Saturday, September 19. Plan to go see it at the OCC Gallery at 990 Queen St. W, Toronto, during the summer. Be sure to say something nice about the work in the COMMENTS book there. If CSCL does not have its own COMMENTS book CSCL can use the OCC's book and Janna will photocopy viewers' biennial comments for CSCL when the exhibition closes.

General Information: As stated in my November article, an Entry Fee is required when submitting work for a CSCL biennial. That fee ($15) allows you to enter up to five pieces. A desk set, or set of anything, counts as one piece. Each piece must consist of at least 75% leather. All work must have been produced since April 2008 (the last biennial). Work entered in the 2008, 2009 or 2010 Annuals is eligible for inclusion in Biennial 2010 -- if it illustrates containment. All paid-up members of CSCL are eligible to enter and compete for awards.

1st Vice President's Report

by Barbara Chynoweth

This past year has been fairly quiet for a change other than filling on for the President when she was unable to make the meetings. We are hoping that she has her health problems behind her and is feeling much better.

2nd Vice President's Report

Paul Kitchener

I am working with the other members on the Biennial 2010 Committee. We are hoping that everyone will attend the Biennial which will be happening later this year.

Treasurer's Report

Respectfully submitted by Della Chynoweth

There hasn't been much change in our accounts this year. We have not received the Memberships for this year and with the low interest rates hopefully next will better for us.

Della Chynoweth moved the Treasurer's report be accepted as circulated. Seconded by Lauch Harrison. Carried.

Auditors Report

The financial books for the 2009/2010 years were audited and found to be in order. Respectfully submitted by Phyllis McHale and Barbara Chynoweth.

Newsletter -- Editor's Report

Respectfully submitted, Madeleine Mitchell

In the past year, the "Canadian Leathercrafter" has been published and emailed four times.

The Spring issue of the newsletter contained details and highlights of the 59th Annual. Hosted by the Toronto Branch, the busy weekend was held in Lindsay, at the Lindsay Inn. Woodstock took home the Weston Trophy. Numerous Craftsman and Salon ribbons were presented to CSCL crafters.

The Summer issue featured a variety of leather projects provided by the Barbara Chynoweth and the Toronto Branch. Dorothy McPherson presented a detailed article on preparing your Biennial 2010 paperwork.

Lauch Harrison's visit to the Norland Branch in October 2009 was featured in the Autumn edition of the "Canadian Leathercraft." They made hats and mitts.

Finally the Winter issue of 2009-2010, pictured a radiant Hilda Chynoweth who celebrated her 100th birthday in February 2010. It was just weeks later we learned of Hilda's passing. All of CSCL will miss Hilda.

The Editor appreciates all those CSCL members who contributed to the year's Newsletters and looks forward to presenting more Member content, in the upcoming year.

Membership

by Tracey Howard

We had 80 members for the year 2009-2010. General members 54, Fellows 8, Associates 5, Student General 6, Life 6, and 3 Sustaining Members. We lost 2 members this year and they both were a big part of our Club. Laura Bush, one of our Directors, who has been a member since 1972 and who I had the great pleasure of meeting only a few time passed way at 91. The other member was very special to me because she was my Grandmother, Hilda Chynoweth, who introduced me to the craft of leather when I was very young, passed away at 100 years young. She has been a member since 1962. They both will be missed.

Library

by Sandra Roberts

There have not been any changes for the Library this past year. I am looking for suggestions for new material to add to our library, so if you have seen anything that might be new and interesting let me know and I will look into adding it. The library boxes will be exchanged at the May 28th Executive Meeting, Branch Presidents please remember to bring them for that meeting.

Get Well Cards and Sympathy Cards were sent out for various CSCL members www.canadianleathercraft.org

Council of Fellows

by David McPherson, FCSCL, chairman

The Council of Fellows met at TUNDRA LEATHER on Sunday April 25, 2010 to conduct business and jury applications for Associate standing, and entries from three branches for the Weston Trophy. The results of that meeting will be made known today.

Also, later Sunday, the Council will be considering the biennial pieces. The Ontario Crafts Council, which is hosting the biennial, required a theme. In September, the 2009 CSCL Art Committee, in co-operation and consultation with the general executive, brought forward a proposal for the biennial theme: LEATHER 2010: CONTAINMENT.

The Council will be judging four new categories that were added to celebrate CSCL's 60th anniversary.

LONDON AWARD was established by two members of London Leather Guild for best jewellery piece
HILDA CHYNOWETH AWARD was established by the lat Hilda Chynoweth for best non-traditional piece
TORONTO BRANCH AWARD was established by the Toronto Branch CSCL for best wearable piece
MISSISSAUGA BRANCH AWARD was established by the Mississauga Branch CSCL for best hard sculpture piece

Thank you to the sponsors of these awards.

It was suggested at last year's Annual that the judging process be looked at and possibly made more transparent. The Fellows plan to meet this weekend to try to make more specific the awarding of points for design and craftsmanship when judging Fellow, Associate, and Weston Trophy pieces. The point system is not used for Craftsman and Salon ribbons and awards.

For the HILDA CHYNOWETH AWARD for best non-traditional piece an Artist Statement must accompany the entry and the judges must evaluate the piece on the success or failure of the Artist to achieve what he/she set out to achieve. Non-traditional methods may be used, but the Artist must state what they were and why they were used. This award does not depend solely on craftsmanship or appearance.

Thank you to all the CSCL judges for their time and efforts.

Web Site

Respectfully submitted, Madeleine Mitchell for the CSCL Website

The CSCL website www.canadianleathercraft.org continues to provide information about CSCL to the worldwide web. We have had over 5000 hits! Updates are scheduled twice a year or as required. A couple of corrections were made in the last quarter. In the fall of 2009 we added an advertiser, a mobile phone supplier in the UK and we were paid! Watch for some changes in 2010. Several new members have discovered CSCL through the website in the past year. Your comments are always welcome and the editor is always looking for reader content and comments at [email address removed]

Sean Dalghetty moved that we accept the reports as read. Seconded by Lauch Harrison. Carried.

Branch Reports

Hamilton Chapter of the CSCL

Respectfully submitted Lauchlan Harrison, Associate CSCL

Hamilton held its regular monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at Tundra Leather. We covered a number of different topics including hand sewing, bottelle making, colouring techniques and hot creasing. We added new members to the group and now number 15 crafters, welcome to Laima, Leaster and Amy. Our Meeting attendance was poor and our aim is to create some programming in advance, and give the members notice regarding the topics to be demonstrated.

2009-2010 Woodstock Branch Report

Submitted by Madeleine Mitchell

Since the Woodstock Branch is hosting the 60th Anniversary Annual of CSCL, a good amount of time and effort has been expended in the planning for this special event. We did find time to explore the creation of Leather Containers with Dorothy McPherson in September, then in October Marion Kehoe showed us a Two Pocket Change Purse. We participated in the Museum Craft Sale in Woodstock in November.

December we had our Annual Christmas Party and in January 2010, we invited a guest demonstrator, Vivian Hutcheson to show us how to Gild Leather. In February, I conducted a mini-workshop on techniques of turned edges and rounded corners used for constructing a Removable Book Cover. Our March meeting had Nancy Durham doing Inverted Carving.

We were saddened to learn that the McPherson's are leaving the Woodstock Branch after the May 2010 Annual. The fate of the Woodstock Branch is yet to be determined.

Toronto Branch Report

Submitted by Barbara Chynoweth, President, Toronto Branch

Because we had all been so busy at the Annual and missed the workshop for our September/October meetings we made some of the roses that Ryan had done a workshop on at the 2009 Annual, November was a Need Help night were you brought any item you needed help with, in December Bruce White instructed us on making a Christmas Decoration, January was another Need Help night, February and March we worked on our Quilt squares and projects for the Annual, our April meeting was cancelled and at our May meeting we again worked on items for the Annual.

Norland Leather Craft Society Report for 2009-2010

Submitted by Phyllis McHale

Finally after a number of years we have new people on the executive for our branch. It is really nice to come to a meeting to find the new members are going ahead and trying articles on their own -- also they are using books from the library to get the patterns and instructions. It takes some stress off the program director. Over the past year or so our library box has been very active. As a club we want to congratulate one of our student members, Darren Burger is going to be going to Thunder Bay this fall for school and he is taking some of his leather tools with him so he says. We have lost some members over the past year but will work on getting some new ones in the fall. So far we have a full program lasting until Christmas, starting almost at square one of leather craft, for some it will be learning and others a refresher.

Mississauga Branch Report

submitted by Ken Boroski

Mississauga has 14 members. They had their election of officers and the following are the new team for 2010-2011.

President: Ken Boroski, Past President: Barry Boyd, 1st Vice President: Stewart Cook, Treasurer: Barry Taylor, Secretary: Jim Wilkes, Program: Karen Weber and Phone: Joyce Scruton.

Barbara Chynoweth moved that all reports submitted be accepted. Seconded by Tracey Howard. Carried.

Tracey Howard moved that the Branch reports be accepted as read. Seconded by Jim Wilkes. Carried.

Weston Trophy Competition

Nancy Durham read the History of the Weston Trophy. There were three branch's entered this year. The Weston Trophy was then presented the Hamilton Branch.

Hamilton 75.6%
Mississauga 67.1%
Woodstock 66.4%

Ribbon Presentation -- Lauch Harrison and Sean Dalgetty then presented 13 Salon and 26 Craftsmen Ribbons.

New Business

Question Box -- Nancy Durham called our attention to the Question Box and asked everyone to use it if they had a question.

Junior Members -- Barbara Chynoweth presented Darren Burger and Julia Malich (received by Joanna) with beginner Leathercraft kits.

[Printed Malich, kept as printed; the site's other records of the family spell the surname "Malec."]

Slide Show -- Paul Kitchener has transferred slides to video show. Some of them are from the 50's so please have a look at them.

Awards -- A discussion on the criteria for awards was held. People would like to see a workshop on this in the coming year. Perhaps we could get one for the fall. People want to know exactly what the judges will be looking for when judging. It was suggested they could perhaps bring pieces to the workshop for critiquing.

2010 Annual -- Sean Dalgetty invited everyone to come to Hamilton for the 61st Annual.

[Printed 2010 Annual, kept as printed; from context (the invitation is to Hamilton, host of the 61st) the year meant is 2011.]

2011 Reports from the CSCL Committees

1st Vice President

by Lauch Harrison

The 2010 Leather Biennial "Containment" at the OCC Office got the year off to a good start. Thanks to all the participants and to Paul Kitchener for the show set up and appearance. The CSCL offered Bookends workshop in the fall was canceled, as luck has it we were glad to get it for the Annual Meeting.

Two of our Guilds folded their operation, leaving two big hole to fill. I am glad for the work of our Membership Committee, we have seen an increase in members. With fewer clubs, the remaining Guilds will have to be inclusive and offer our Members at Large invitations to visit and partake in our Monthly meetings. Lots of Categories have been added to this years Judging Line up, this will be an Annual Meeting to remember.

2nd Vice President

Membership Report

by Tracey Howard

I would like to welcome the new CSCL members to our club. As it stands right now we have 57 General members, 6 Students, 8 Fellows, 5 Associates, 5 Life and 1 Sustaining member.

Our membership has been up and down this year. January to the end of February has been the most active due to our Membership drive this year.

Membership Drive Report

by Tracey Howard and Rob Regan

This year we had a competition between the CSCL Branches. The branch that got the most new members wins and the prize is to get the same amount of money back to go towards the Guild. Mississauga was the winner. Congratulations Mississauga. Next year our membership drive for new members will be pay for 2 years membership and get the third for free. The person cannot have belonged to the CSCL in the last 3 years if they are rejoining.

Newsletter 2010-2011 Editor's Report

Respectfully submitted by Madeleine Mitchell

In the past year, the "Canadian Leathercrafter" has been published and emailed four times.

The Spring issue of the newsletter celebrated the 60th Anniversary of CSCL. Hosted by the Woodstock Branch, members enjoyed a special weekend with Hamilton winning the Weston Trophy. Craftsman, Salon ribbons and Special awards were listed along with the new 2010-2012 Executive Council. Walter Muma, son of Robert and Dorothy Muma, founding members of CSCL, spoke about a "A Life Lived Creatively."

The Summer issue featured news from CSCL friends -- Stanley Major of "Sea Leather Wear" in Calgary and Alf Luneborg of Norway who publishes a magazine about Scandinavian leather. We also reported on the passing of Bill Reis, the publisher of "The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal." Vivian Hutcheson, who presented at the May Annual, provided more resources for Gilding on Leather.

The exhibition LEATHER 2010: CONTAINMENT was highlighted the Autumn issue. We also started a new section about "Getting to Know CSCL Members" featuring Peter Grove. Bryan Goring and Robert Regan also contributed articles. The ending of the Woodstock Branch was mentioned in the editor's notes.

The Winter issue of 2010-2011 had an article by Dorothy McPherson about Don Taylor's Box Making Course and we got to know David McPherson. Pictures from the Norland Purse Making Workshop with Lauch Harrison were featured. Barbara Chynoweth reported on the folding of the Toronto Branch.

The Editor appreciates all those CSCL members who contributed to the year's Newsletters and looks forward to presenting more Member content, in the upcoming year.

Council of Fellows Report

by David McPherson, FCSCL, chairman

The Council of Fellows met at TUNDRA LEATHER on Sunday April 3, 2011 to conduct business and jury three applications for Associate standing, and entries from two branches for the Weston Trophy. The results of that meeting will be made known today.

It was great to have 5 pieces from each Branch entered for Weston Trophy. Although marks were not high, the competition was very close. It is also terrific to have members trying for Associate standing. All general members should read over carefully the requirements for advanced standing in CSCL and make preparations for application next year.

A proposal to help members understand the process of judging entries was considered. This will be tested at this Annual and discussed with the membership.

Thank you to all the CSCL judges for their time and efforts.

Workshop Report 2010-2011

Madeleine Mitchell and Lauch Harris

In spite of good intentions we did not have a CSCL wide Workshop in the past year. There was a plan to have a workshop to make Leather Covered Book Ends, but not enough registered to make the workshop a go. As it turns out, this workshop will be presented at the 2011 Annual.

Norland Branch has been having Purse Making Meetings with Lauch Harrison. As always, Norland welcomes members from CSCL if they care to attend their meetings.

Along with Lauch Harris, we will strive to get back to a workshop schedule in the coming year. Any suggestions are welcome.

Corresponding Secretary Report

by Pat Bullock

Sympathy cards were sent out to family's of members that passed on over the year. If you know of anyone having a special occasion or in hospital let me know I would be glad to drop them a line from the CSCL.

Web Site Report

Respectfully submitted, Madeleine Mitchell for the CSCL Website

The CSCL website www.canadianleathercraft.org continues to provide information about CSCL to the worldwide web. We have had over 6500 hits!

We added a new editing program in 2010 that allows easier changes and updates as needed. The Executive Council asked about having a "members only" area where members can display their work and/or business and this will be investigated in the new year.

Your comments are always welcome and the editor is always looking for reader content and comments at [email address removed] www.canadianleathercraft.org

2010 Branch Reports

Hamilton Branch Report

Respectfully submitted Wan Dalgetty

[Printed Wan Dalgetty, kept as printed; the archive reads this as Sean Dalgetty, who signs the Hamilton Branch report and is named in full elsewhere in this document.]

Hamilton branch has had a very productive year, especially with getting the Annual arranged. We meet the second Wednesday of every month at Tundra Leather in downtown Hamilton.

We have run some workshops in the shop, but planning for this annual has taken most of the meeting time. Hamilton has been able to sign on a bunch of new members this year and some of those members are responsible for our Weston entries. We are looking forward to everyone enjoying this years' Leather Guild Annual.

Mississauga Branch Report

submitted by Ken Ken Boroski

This past year has been a year of change for the M.S.C.L.

When I was elected President last May, I told the group that the Mississauga Guild was going to become an effective Leather Guild. My goal was to have people want to join the M.S.C.L. and to make it practical and useful.

My mandate was to give every guild member the tools, the knowledge and the instruction to become better leather workers. We did this by having a speaker/demonstrator at every guild meeting. The first 3 meetings were conducted by member Gary Anthony Cook, and he instructed the group on everything pertaining to braiding. Gary is a "Master Braider" (my words, not his). The next session was on dyeing leather. It was a hands on session which was basically led by everyone there. The next meeting was on the swivel knife, conducted by Paul Kitchener. Paul does an excellent job at instruction and went over everything from the different types of blades, sharpening, maintaining the tool and included types of cuts, swivel cuts, including exercises to increase swivel knife skill. The last session we had was led by Peter Grove and was Swivel Knive, part 2. Peter also did an excellent job on carving.

Our membership is up by 5 members over last year, not including 3 members we signed up over the past 2 weeks.

We sponsored our first workshop in a long while. David McPherson conducted the workshop on box making. It was attended by 18 participants who all completed a box under David's excellent instruction.

Items that the MSCL are working on for the future.

- Web site for MSCL including a bio of the members
- future workshops
- possibility of having a booth at festivals, fairs, malls, shows, etc.
- contests and judging of items made by Mississauga members
- hosting the 2011 M.S.C.L Annual

Norland Branch Report

Submitted by Tracey Howard

We had a great year this year. We recruited 4 new members to our club, 3 general members and 1 student, which brings our total to 19. We discussed what everyone wanted to do and we decided on purses for Sept, Oct and Nov. We invited Lauch Harrison to come and guide us along our way. We had lots of fun, laughs and of course fed him well. Thanks again Lauch. January we did butterfly broches and different things. February we did belts some were bedazzled with jems and some were carved and others were laced. We had lots of variety going on there. March meeting was a finish up meeting and Lauch was great to come and visit with his wife and son and helped us out once again. Thanks Lauch. Soon he is going to become one of the Norland guild. LOL.

We had been running low on funds for our guild so we decided to do some fundraising. We served hamburgers and hotdogs this summer again at the Norland Festival in July and we got to keep10 % or our profits. We had a spaghetti diner in October. It turned out not too bad and people wanted to know when we were having another

one, so we decided we would have another one in September this year. We had a yard sale but it did not turn out so great. We are also having a Tupperware party in May of this year to raise funds.

Toronto Branch Report

Submitted by Barbara Chynoweth, President, Toronto Branch

It was with great regret that the Toronto Branch of The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft gave notice to the CSCL Executive at the December 2010 Executive Meeting that after 60 years of being they are ceasing operations of the club and folding the branch in the Spring of 2011.

The funds from the Toronto Branch are being dispersed as follows: $500.00 will go to each of the existing Branches and the remaining money will go to the Special Endowment Account to be used as Award Money in honour of Al Foss, Jack Meharg and Bruce White for their dedication and commitment to leathercraft. These Awards are still to be determined.

Woodstock Branch Report

Submitted by Madeleine Mitchell

The Woodstock Branch hosted the 60th Anniversary Annual of CSCL, it was a special weekend in May 2010, with surprises, workshops, special guests and CSCL's warmth and friendship.

We held our annual potluck picnic in June and discussed the future of our Woodstock Branch. We agreed to meet in September to make our decision.

At the September meeting it was decided not to continue as a Branch. Members would either join another Branch or become Members-at-Large. The monies in the Branch account was delivered to the CSCL Treasurer to be used for a "Woodstock Heritage Award" to be awarded at both Annuals and Biennial Exhibitions.
