President's Message
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the 62nd Annual. I hope everyone has a good time, meets new people and learns much. I would like to welcome any new members and please if you need help please don't hesitate to ask questions, someone will have the answer.
Our Executive is always looking for ideas on what you would like to learn and I know that our Workshop team is looking for suggestions from you.
Please take time to meet other members of the CSCL, this is a good place to make conections that you may want to contact later for information or help with a project.
I hope that you will enjoy the demonstrations that Peter Main will be doing this weekend.
In 2013 we will be hosting our Biennial and I hope that we will receive lots of entries for the competitions. Madeleine Mitchell is working on negotiating a location to hold the event in Woodstock in a new venue there, more to come later in the year.
This year after the Annual I will be handing the reins over to Lauch Harrison, who will be your new President and I hope that everyone will give him their support, help and their ideas for future projects and workshops.
Once again welcome and may the tools work with you. Barbara www.canadianleathercraft.org

Reports
President's Annual Report: Barbara Chynoweth
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to the 61st Annual. I hope everyone has a good time, meets new people and learns much.
With the 2010 Biennial behind us we are already looking towards the 2012 Biennial and starting to plan, we are looking at adding several more awards for this event.
The last 6 months have been very busy as I retired from the work force and also moved. On a sadder note mother, Hilda Chynoweth's younger sister Peggy Saunders, who many of you met at the Banquets when the Norland and Toronto Branches held their Annuals in Lindsay, passed away in March, she was 96 years young.

I am hoping that we can get some workshops going this coming year and I am sure that Madeleine or Lauch would appreciate any suggestions or help you may want to give.
Once again welcome and may the tools work with you. Barbara
1st Vice: by Lauch Harrison
The 2010 Leather Biennial "Containment" at the OCC Office got the year off to a good start. Thanks to all the participants and to Paul Kitchener for the show set up and appearance. The CSCL offered Bookends workshop in the fall was cancelled, as luck has it we were glad to get it for the Annual Meeting.
Two of our Guilds folded their operation, leaving two big holes to fill. I am glad for the work of our Membership Committee, we have seen an increase in members. With fewer clubs, the remaining Guilds will have to be inclusive and offer our Members at Large invitations to visit and partake in our Monthly meetings. Lots of Categories have been added to this year's Judging Line up; this will be an Annual Meeting to remember.

Newsletter -- Editor's Report
Madeleine Mitchell
In the past year, the "Canadian Leathercrafter" has been published and emailed four times.
The Spring issue of the newsletter celebrated the 60th Anniversary of CSCL. Hosted by the Woodstock Branch, members enjoyed a special weekend with Hamilton winning the Weston Trophy. Craftsman, Salon ribbons and Special awards were listed along with the new 2010-2012 Executive Council. Walter Muma, son of Robert and Dorothy Muma, founding members of CSCL spoke about a "A Life Lived Creatively" .
The Summer issue featured news from CSCL friends -- Stanley Major of "Sea Leather Wear" in Calgary and Alf Luneborg of Norway who publishes a magazine about Scandinavian leather. We also reported on the passing of Bill Reis, the publisher of "The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal." Vivian Hutcheson, who presented at the May Annual, provided more resources for Gilding on Leather.
The exhibition LEATHER 2010: CONTAINMENT was highlighted the Autumn issue. We also started a new section about "Getting to Know CSCL Members" featuring Peter Grove. Bryan Goring and Robert Regan also contributed articles. The ending of the Woodstock Branch was mentioned in the editor's notes.
The Winter issue of 2010-2011 had an article by Dorothy McPherson about Don Taylor's Box Making Course and we got to know David McPherson. Pictures from the Norland Purse Making Workshop with Lauch Harrison were featured. Barbara Chynoweth reported on the folding of the Toronto Branch.
The Editor appreciates all those CSCL members who contributed to the year's Newsletters and looks forward to presenting more Member content, in the upcoming year.

I would like to welcome the new CSCL members to our club. As it stands right now we have 57 General members, 6 Students, 8 Fellows, 5 Associates, 5 Life and 1 Sustaining member.
Our membership has been up and down this year. January to the end of February has been the most active due to our Membership drive this year.
Membership Drive Report
by Tracey Howard and Rob Regan
This year we had a competition between the CSCL Branches. The branch that got the most new members wins and the prize is to get the same amount of money back to go towards the Guild. Mississauga was the winner. Congratulations Mississauga. Next year our membership drive for new members will be pay for 2 years membership and get the third for free. The person cannot have belonged to the CSCL in the last 3 years if they are rejoining.
The winner of the Drive was the Mississauga Branch.

Council of Fellows
by David McPherson, FCSCL, chairman
The Council of Fellows met at TUNDRA LEATHER on Sunday April 3, 2011 to conduct business and jury three applications for Associate standing, and entries from two branches for the Weston Trophy. The results of that meeting will be made known today.
It was great to have 5 pieces from each Branch entered for Weston Trophy. Although marks were not high, the competition was very close. It is also terrific to have members trying for Associate standing. All general members should read over carefully the requirements for advanced standing in CSCL and make preparations for application next year.
A proposal to help members understand the process of judging entries was considered. This will be tested at this Annual and discussed with the membership.
Thank you to all the CSCL judges for their time and efforts.
[The page is printed in a single column, but the opening lines of this report are out of order on it: after the heading "Council of Fellows: by David McPherson," come "The results of that meeting will be made known today." and "It was great to have 5 pieces from each Branch entered for Weston Trophy. Although marks were FCSCL, chairman", and only then the paragraph beginning "The Council of Fellows met at TUNDRA LEATHER", which runs on "... for the Weston Trophy not high, the competition was very close." The report above is set out in its intended order, matching the wording of the same report (same April 3, 2011 meeting) in the Society's 2011 annual report.]

The CSCL website www.canadianleathercraft.org continues to provide information about CSCL to the worldwide web. We have had over 6500 hits!
We added a new editing program in 2010 that allows easier changes and updates as needed. The Executive Council asked about having a "members only" area where members can display their work and/or business and this will be investigated in the new year.

Hamilton branch has had a very productive year, especially with getting the Annual arranged. We meet the second Wednesday of every month at Tundra Leather in downtown Hamilton.
We have run some workshops in the shop, but planning for this annual has taken most of the meeting time. Hamilton has been able to sign on a bunch of new members this year and some of those members are responsible for our Weston entries. We are looking forward to everyone enjoying this
2009-2010 Woodstock Branch Report
Submitted by Madeleine Mitchell
The Woodstock Branch hosted the 60th Anniversary Annual of CSCL, it was a special weekend in May 2010, with surprises, workshops, special guests and CSCL's warmth and friendship.
We held our annual potluck picnic in June and discussed the future of our Woodstock Branch. We agreed to meet in September to make our decision.
At the September meeting it was decided not to continue as a Branch. Members would either join another Branch or become Members-at-Large. The monies in the Branch account was delivered to the CSCL Treasurer to be used for a "Woodstock Heritage Award" to be awarded at both Annuals and Biennial Exhibitions.
Toronto Branch Report
Submitted by Barbara Chynoweth, President, Toronto Branch
It was with great regret that the Toronto Branch of The Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft gave notice to the CSCL Executive at the December 2010 Executive Meeting that after 60 years of being they are ceasing operations of the club and folding the branch in the Spring of 2011.
The funds from the Toronto Branch are being dispersed as follows: $500.00 will go to each of the existing Branches and the remaining money will go to the Special Endowment Account to be used as Award Money in honour of Al Foss, Jack Meharg and Bruce White for their dedication and commitment to leathercraft. These Awards are still to be determined.
Norland Leather Craft Society Report for 2009-2010
Submitted by Tracey Howard
We had a great year this year. We recruited 4 new members to our club, 3 general members and 1 student, which bring our total to 19. We discussed what everyone wanted to do and we decided on purses for Sept, Oct and Nov. We invited Lauch Harrison to come and guide us along our way. We had lots of fun, laughs and of course fed him well. Thanks again Lauch. January we did butterfly brooches and different things. February we did belts, some were bedazzled with gems and some were carved and others were laced. We had lots of variety going on there. March meeting was a finish up meeting and Lauch was great to come and visit with his wife and son and helped us out once again. Thanks Lauch. Soon he is going to become one of the Norland guild. LOL.
We had been running low on funds for our guild so we decided to do some fundraising. We served hamburgers and hotdogs this summer again at the Norland Festival in July and we got to keep 10 % or our profits. We had a spaghetti dinner in October. It turned out not too bad and people wanted to know when we were having another one, so we decided we would have another one in September this year. We had a yard sale but it did not turn out so great. We are also having a Tupperware party in May of this year to raise funds.

As 1st vice I had the opportunity to travel and help Norland with some of the regular monthly meetings. We had a chance to do some set up on thonged purses with a tapered gusset, a couple of large hip bags and a carved pastoral scene project. The hospitality was super and everyone was very forthcoming and eager to get work on the leather.

In the past year, the "Canadian Leathercrafter" has been published and emailed four times.
The Spring issue of the newsletter reported the events of the 61st Anniversary of CSCL. Hosted by the Hamilton Branch, members enjoyed a special weekend with Hamilton winning the Weston Trophy. Craftsman, Salon ribbons and Special awards were listed along with the new awards that included the Junior Award won by, I believe, our youngest member, Julia Malec. It was also the edition announcing the folding of the Toronto Branch, CSCL's first Branch.
The Summer issue featured news from a former CSCL member, Harold Brister, who now makes his home in Prince Edward Island but continues to keep his hands busy in his leather craft shop. CSCL continues its association with "The Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal." Bryan Goring of the Mississauga Branch provided an in-depth article about his journey involved in recovering a leather chair.
The Autumn issue featured a tribute to our Ruth M. Haig who passed away September 1, 2011. A force not to be forgotten, Ruth will stay in our memories as a CSCL Fellow, a teacher, and a fine individual. Norland's President Tracey Howard, a third generation Leathercrafter, wrote an article about CSCL's most Northern Branch.
The Winter issue of 2011-2012 confronted the issue of Privacy and CSCL's publications, both in print and online through the website. With the details of the Annual in this issue and the list of the Awards and Ribbons, the Mississauga Branch is eagerly looking forward to the 2012 Annual Weekend. The History of the Weston Trophy was explored and an in-depth article called "Forgotten Tools" provided by Lauch Harrison of the Hamilton Branch filled out the edition.
The Editor appreciates all those CSCL members who contributed to the year's Newsletters and looks forward to presenting more Member content, in the next year.

Hamilton Branch Report
Respectfully submitted Sean Dalgetty, F.C.S.C.L.
Meeting every second Wednesday of the month, 16 members in Hamilton Branch gather at Tundra Leather to pursue some points of interest regarding leatherwork. Generally led by our Fellows Peter and Sean, they explain and demonstrate techniques that can be used in ongoing projects. We have done Carving, Gusset Construction, Hand Stitching and we had an excellent Travel Log of Lester and Lima's trip to Sheridan Wyoming, Fort Worth, Texas and all points West.
Mississauga Branch Report
submitted by Ken Ken Boroski
The main focus of the Mississauga Branch was the CSCL Annual Meeting and Awards. We wanted the Annual to be a first rate, top notch affair. The theme of the Annual is "Days of Yore," stressing the leatherwork done by past members and leather workers everywhere.
We are very fortunate to have as a guest for the weekend, Mr. Peter Main, who is a Stohlman award winner, and is a renowned leatherworker and artist. Mr. Main will be attending the entire weekend and will be available to all members and attendees.
Throughout the past year, the Mississauga Branch is represented every Saturday morning at Tandy Leather Factory, by Paul Kitchener, Fellow, CSCL. Paul leads the morning group by instruction, teaching, showing, watching and supporting all levels of craft person. Paul and Linda have been instrumental in obtaining Mr. Main for the weekend of the Annual.
The Branch also manned a booth at the Ancaster Street Festival, held in Ancaster. Karen Weber was kind enough to allow the guild to share her booth, and promote our leatherwork and the Mississauga guild. We tried to conduct a demonstration at every meeting. In the past we have had carving demonstrations, dyeing, lacing and geometric stamping.
Overall, I feel 2012 was a good year for the Mississauga Guild with involvement from all members.
Norland Branch Report
Submitted by Tracey Howard
We currently have 19 members in our guild. In September the Club held a Spaghetti Dinner to help raise money for the club, we had a very good turnout and we will be holding another one this coming September 15th.
We started in September with leather burning which everyone had great fun doing, it took us 2 classes to finish. We talked about what we were going to do over the year but most of the ideas went by the weigh side. In November we worked on bookends and celebrated Christmas as we do not have a meeting in December. At our January meetings we decided we were going to watch some videos on stamping, carving & colour out of the CSCL library. We had lots of fun because the movies I'm sure were from the 1960's but we still got lots out of them, everyone learned something new, because we decided we were going to follow the videos and do a stamping project and a carving project. So for the next 3 meeting that is what we did, we went back to basics and we also had a visit from Lauch and his delightful wife.
Some of our members are unsure what all the tools are for so this really helped us, me for sure to get a better grip on the tools. In May we are going to dye the carving project that we did from the video. In June we will be having our Branch BBQ. This year we are going to meet during the summer months.

[The two right-hand columns on this page do not sum to the printed totals in every row -- e.g. the endowment sub-total is printed as $12,080.43 both for 2012 (correct) and elsewhere as $12,170.43 for 2011, and "Total Funds Available" for 2011 is printed as $14,240.68 though the Operating Account page gives the 2011 closing balance as $13,862.56 -- kept exactly as printed rather than reconciled.]
