The President's Message Another year has passed since we last assembled. Our membership is a little like the Canadian
economy - down. Let's hope they both recover the flourish in the very near future. Just about every club has lost some special
friend this past year and they all will be missed by everyone. The Toronto and Hamilton groups have a few new members in the
past few years; Mississauga has shrunk down to the bare number to operate as a club. On a positive note Mississauga has
registered with the Mississauga Recreation and Parks board and will hopefully be getting some publicity with that group's
Bi-ennial mail-outs that go out on an EVERY HOUSE basis. M.S.C.L. have a large, well lit room, and plenty of parking for their
meetings and workshops. Just maybe this new approach will new some inquiry and inspire new members.

Internally we need more
applications for Associates and Fellows, to be in line to carry on for the future. Let's face it, none of us are getting any
younger, it's harder for us all to get around now than it was 20 years ago. It's more awkward to get supplies in some areas,
because of tore closures. There are ways around this, use the telephone more to order, or mail in orders. It can be worked out,
and we do work these little obstacles out. So why can't we work out the problem of membership and come up with more people. Age
doesn't matter, but young people would give us many more future years of attendance, especially if we can involve them in the
offices of the various clubs and eventually C.S.C.L. Executive.

Let's hope we can attract more new members, particularly
younger people. When I say young, not necessarily 20-30 year old's, they would be terrific, but maybe 30-50 year old's; age
doesn't really matter. Interest and the desire to learn are the foremost qualities. Ability with the time to do the work,
coupled with instruction form our current members could easily develop their interests and make them keen to turn out top
quality work.

We should be open to a lot of new ideas. The world around us is certainly changing in leaps and bounds. Just
maybe what was acceptable and functional a few years ago will not appeal to today's novice worker with leather. Coasters, key
fobs and wallets still have a lot of appeal to everyone and are an excellent starting spot. People try to travel as lightly as
possible these days, and even a perfect piece like a ladies' purse with gussets, clasps, and fancy tooled leather may be too
heavy, and expensive for today's housewife and mother toting a child or carrying groceries, and driving a car. Today they seem
to look for something lighter in weight, but still attractive and serviceable. They don't like moving things from one purse to
another for special events or outfits, they say they don't have time. Perhaps we should look at this and come up with something
special.

THE "I WANT ONE OF THOSE" IDEA.

Look around you, what are people doing, what are their requirements for doing it.

"I
WISH I HAD SOMETHING THAT WOULD DO THIS OR THAT."

Page 4

see page 4 in the original →

Page 3 We all hear this from time to time. At work, at play, in the house, just maybe the real answer is there, staring at us in
the face. Let's keep our eyes and ears open and let any and all the suggestions roll in. Get an idea, doodle it out on paper,
try and find all the flaws of construction and finishing, overcome them, one way or another. Try and come up with something new,
required in the today world, make it work. With our total club membership as it stands, we could probably come up with at least
30 to 40 bright new ideas.

Our new treasurer has finally consolidated all of our many bank accounts into two accounts. One for
Current Expenses; the other account is divided into sections, one for [the first half of this line did not print legibly] for the Jean Hunter Memorial Fund and one section
for the Library Fund. My personal thanks to Lea Love, for all the running around and for getting this matter cleared up.

I would
like to see some of these monies become fluid in the near future, to become what they were initially intended to be, a memorial
to members of the past, lets have a trophy for best piece in the show, originality of design, best club table, best novice
worker, most improved novice worker, or even members choice at an Annual or Bi-enniel; you name it, but lets give some
encouragement to the members old and new, and the clubs, and lets do it soon. Lets give the membership something special to work
for, so they can truly be proud. Respectfully Submitted, Don Macleod, President C.S.C.L.

Page 6

printed Page 5

see page 6 in the original →

12. New Business: The meeting discussed ways and means to reduce the cost of the Bulletin and/or raise additional
revenue. It was suggested that life members either pay full membership or the cost of their Bulletins. The last time the
C.S.C.L. raised membership dues, membership dropped by 40 members. A motion to increase membership dues was tabled for further
thought. A change in the Bulletin format would reduce costs, but the new format would not be compatible with the current format
for binding purposes. No motion was made. Ruth Haig will conduct a workshop on leather mache on Saturday May 24, 1991. The
President of Mississauga, Bill Whittingham, handed out a questionnaire asking what kind of workshops the members would like at
the next Annual. He also asked each branch to prepare a mascot or insignia for the next Annual. At least 4 members of each guild
should work on it.

13. Question Box: 1 Question. Moved by Lea Love and seconded by Jack Meharg that the 41st Annual meeting of
the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft adjourn. Respectfully Submitted,
Kevin W. Armstrong.

NOTICE OF MOTION: Take notice that the following
motion will be made at the Annual Meeting: "That Article XII section I of the By-Laws of the Canadian Society for Creative
Leathercraft be amended to read as follows: ALL CHEQUES ISSUED BY THE SOCIETY SHALL BE SIGNED BY ANY TWO OF THE TREASURER, THE
PRESIDENT, THE RECORDING SECRETARY, AND SUCH OTHER PERSON OR PERSONS AS DESIGNATED BY THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL."

ARCHIVIST'S REPORT

The C.S.C.L. maintains an archives, which is the memory of the organization. It contains minutes, reports, materials relating to
Annuals and Bi-ennials, correspondence, photos, etc. As with anyone's memory, it is stronger in some spots, and not so strong in
others. If you have any material, of any kind, that relates to the C.S.C.L, its affiliates, the IFLC, or individual members of
the C.S.C.L. that you do not want, please forward it to me, just in case it might be something that we have currently
"forgotten". Respectfully yours,

Kevin W. Armstrong, Archivist.

Editor's Report

Lois MacPherson and I have done this job for two years now. We have been lucky enough to get enough articles for the Bulletins without delving into past issues. Lois and I have been typing everyother issue to share the job. We still do not have any articles for future issues, but we are getting just enough to cover the present Bulletin. At least we know the government is interested because we got a notice from them asking for the second copy of certain issues.

This past year, we've had several good articles: David Windeyer had an article on the Portmanteau; David and Dorothy McPherson gave us an article on their coverage at the Niagara Guild; Ruth Haig sent me an article on A Busman's Holiday from Arts Beat; Betsy Rennie wrote an article on Machine Garment Sewing; Muriel McKnight wrote a Page

good article on Hamilton's 35th Anniversary; Don Macleod wrote an article on a Personnel Card Case. Lois and I would like to
thank all the people who contributed to make this year easier for us. Thank You! Respectfully Submitted, Betsy Rennie, Editor.
BRANCH REPORTS HAMILTON

The first meeting of the new season, the guild did Trays as a mini workshop. At our November meeting,
Ruth haig held a full day workshop on Credit Card Holders using blocks of wood or plexi-glass. The leather was moulded over the
form onto the back piece of leather. It was a successful event with 12 members present. Three of these were from other Branches.
At Christmas, Hamilton Leathercraft Guild celebrated their 35th Anniversary. This was well attended with nine former members
such as Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wilson and Winnie Comfort. There were slides shown of last year's Annual and some older slides. The
Birthday/Anniversary cake was cut by Betsy Rennie. For the next three months, the group worked on Lasted Boxes. Ruth Haig took
us through this project. In January we started on a wood form block, putting our design in it. David Windeyer showed us how to
make Mukluk Moccasins. In December, Muriel McKnight and Betsy Rennie sat for a day at the TerryBerry Library with a table full
of display pieces and some work which was for sale. There were many interested people that came by to look at our work. The
Guild had two Library Displays, at the TerryBerry Library in January and at the Ancaster Library in March. June Sommerville
writes to the local papers and cable network for free media coverage. * Respectfuly Submitted, Betsy Rennie, FCSCL, President.
MISSISSAUGA

In the Fall of 1991, the Mississauga Guild was saddened by the passing of Bob Myles. Bob was originally a member of
the Barrie Guild. He then joined the Mississauga Guild early in it's development. His humour and friendship are greatly missed.
In our continuing attempt to gain new members, we have registered the guild with the Mississauga Recreation and Parks Department
and hope that this new exposure will garner some interest from the general public. This year has been dedicated to the planning
of the 92 Annual, but it has been decided that next year we will meet on the third Wednesday of every month, instead of our
traditional bi-monthly schedule.

We look forward to an active and productive year. Executive 1992-93 President: Don Macleod; _ Vice President: Lois
MacPherson; Treasurer: Lea Love Secretary: Kevin Armstrong Membership/Program Convenor/Librarian: Bill Whittingham. Respectfully
Submitted, Bill Whittingham, President. NORLAND

After the convention in 1991, the members of the Norland Branch decided they
should put more effort into working with leather. We had our election of officers at the April meeting. Our past president Hilda
Chynoweth, who was one of the original organisers of the Norland Branch was given the job of program co-ordinator. A program was
set for the coming year, These along with the patterns and instructions which would be needed were given to the members. The
members were given scrap leather at the first meeting in the fall and instructed on the use of their swivel knives. Material was
bought by the club and kits made up, this way each member had what was required to complete the project for that meeting. This
has really been working well. This past year we had four people who wanted to try working with leather. They have attended our
meetings, so far one has decided to join the C.S.C.L.. As club members we hope we can encourage more people to come out to our
meetings. This year we rotated our meetings, having a meeting at each member's home. This seems to have worked well, too. The
two full day workshops were held at Hilda's. All in all, we the Norland Branch have seen a productive year. Respectfully
Submitted, Phyllis McHale. TORONTO Our theme for this year was Back to Basics! Finishing edges, dyeing, embossing, moulded
gussets. Jessie Little led us through change purses with and without gussets. Jessie also did an excellent demo on splatter
dyeing. Bruce White did a demo on hand sewing. We also had a talk on Pricing and Selling by harry Wendland. Next year, we hope
to continue our Back to Basics theme. Good Luck and Have a good summer. Respectfully Submitted, Bruce H. White, President.
