Everyone in the Photograph, 1990
← The People · sixty-one members named on the key to the 40th Annual Meeting group portrait

The Society had itself photographed at its fortieth Annual Meeting, and someone typed a key to the picture: five rows of names, left to right, on one sheet of paper. It is the only document in this archive that names, at one moment, everybody who was in the room. This page sets those names out and says which of them the archive already knew.
The sheet
It is headed CANADIAN SOCIETY FOR CREATIVE LEATHERCRAFT — 40th Annual Meeting, and beneath that, Elm Hurst Restaurant — Ingersoll, Ontario. The date was typed May 28, 1990; May has been struck out and APRIL written above it by hand. The correction is right. The newsletter's own report of the meeting says members arrived at the Elmhurst Inn on the evening of Friday 27 April and that the business meeting opened at ten on Saturday 28 April, and it is on that Saturday, once the business was done, that “Verne Harvey, a local professional photographer, then coordinated and cajoled all C.S.C.L. members in attendance to smile their brightest as he snapped a 40th Anniversary portrait.” The Society's own hosts spell the place Elmhurst Inn; the typist of the key wrote Elm Hurst Restaurant.
- 40th Annual Meeting, Elmhurst Inn, Ingersoll, Ontario, 27–28 April 1990, hosted by the Woodstock Branch
- 60 registrations were taken on the Saturday morning; 61 people are named on the photograph key
- The portrait was taken by Verne Harvey, a local professional photographer, after the business meeting
The sheet closes with a line that is the whole of its method: Names are listed from left to right.

Names are given here exactly as the sheet prints them. Where the archive carries a person under a different spelling, the difference is set out in the table below rather than corrected here — the sheet is the record.
What the archive already knew
Forty-three of the sixty-one are in the register under exactly this name, and a further ten under a spelling that differs by a letter or two. The room contained the Society's whole working leadership of that year — its retiring President Ruth Haig, its incoming President Don MacLeod, Jack Meharg and Bill Whittingham its vice-presidents, Kevin Armstrong its recording secretary, Betsy Rennie its corresponding secretary and joint editor with Lois MacPherson — and a good deal of its memory besides: Sadie Roebuck and Bea Austin, Life Members of 1983 and 1982; Viola Harris, an honorary Fellow of 1970; Nora Huyck and Jessie Little, both widowed within the Society's own pages; Marion Kehoe, who had presented the Weston Trophy for London in 1968 and taken prizes at the Western Fair of 1964.
Eight are new to the archive with this sheet and appear here for the first time: James Wm. Kelly, Marnie Harrington, Clara Terryberry, Jean Montgomery, Irene Bumby, Marg. LaChapell, Bob Myles, and Jolanta Hackstetter, who stands in the fourth row while René Hackstetter stands in the fifth.
What the same meeting conferred
Three of the people in the photograph had been raised that morning. The newsletter's report says: “Dorothy Muma, F.C.S.C.L., chairman of the Council of Fellows awarded the designation of Fellows to Betsy Rennie, of the Hamilton Branch and Associate memberships to René Hackstetter, Toronto, and to Cliff McTavish, Mississauga. Cliff also received the Zalitz pin for outstanding accomplishments in his Associate pieces.” All three are now in the register with that date and that source; Betsy Rennie's Fellowship had been carried only from the Fellows reports of 2021–2024, with no year at all.
The pin is spelled Zalitz here. This edition holds it as the Zalitis Pin, after the donor, and has seen it printed Zalitis in 1982 and named for Janis Zalitis, who gave it. This is the fourth spelling of one pin.
Two more things happened in front of the camera that day. Ruth Haig read aloud the minutes of the organizational meeting held in Toronto on 8 June 1950, and Ray Potter, one of the founding fathers, was made an Honourary Life Member — the honour the archive already records for 1990. Neither Ray Potter nor Robert Muma, who was also at that first meeting and was named from the platform, is on the photograph key.
Where the sheet and the register differ
| As the sheet prints it | As the archive carries the person | What settles it |
|---|---|---|
| Betsy Rennis | Betsy Rennie | The same sheet prints Jim Rennie with an e; the Spring 1990 newsletter names Betsy Rennie of the Hamilton Branch as the Fellow made that day. |
| Gladyse Riddell | Gladys Riddell | Gladys throughout the awards, the certifications and the Weston Trophy teams of 1967 and 1971, and in her memorial notice of 2006. |
| Lillain Kay | Lillian Kay | Lillian in the certifications, the officer lists and the Spring 1990 report of this same meeting; the sheet has transposed two letters. |
| Madeline Mitchell | Madeleine Mitchell | Madeleine in her own signed Woodstock history, in the officer lists and in the report of this meeting, where she read the slate of officers. |
| Dave Windeyer | David Windeyer | David in the certifications of 1994 and in the officer lists. |
| Muriel McKnigh | Muriel McKnight | The final t is simply missing at the right-hand edge of the typed line; Muriel McKnight is a Director of the Society through these years and is named in this meeting's report as Hamilton Branch president. |
| Joyce Scraton | Joyce Scruton | The masthead of the same Spring 1990 issue prints Scruton, and Joyce Scruton is a Director of the Society through these years; the a is a typing slip. |
The document
The key sheet is published in this archive as a single scanned page under Invitations & Programmes, and this page is written from it. The photograph itself is not with it.
The photograph itself had never been published: it is a JPEG, and the document pipeline publishes PDFs, so it sat in the collection unseen and lying on its side. It has been turned upright and reduced for the web; the original scan is unaltered.
Written for this archive from the typed key to the 40th Annual Meeting group photograph, one page, and from the Society's own report of that meeting in the Spring 1990 newsletter, page 2. The sheet's spellings are kept as the sheet prints them; where the archive carries a person otherwise, the difference is stated rather than corrected.
