Page No. 1 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Welcome to the 39th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft. It is a
privilege to be President of CSCL at this time of growth and renewed interest in leather.

Through communication and workshops
our membership is increasing, with members from coast to coast in Canada, and the U.S.A. A request has been received from a new
member in Saskatchewan, for information on forming a new guild. In Ontario, many younger persons are interested in learning
leather techniques. Former members of CSCL are rejoining our society for learning and Fellowship.

Our five branches, Hamilton,
Mississauga, Norland, Toronto, and Woodstock held exciting meetings and workshops throughout the year. CSCL sponsored two major
workshops; Boxes by David McPherson: and Trays by Jessie Little. These were excellent demonstrations with capacity
participation. The fruits of labour are evident in our show today.

Our Biennial exhibition, LEATHER 88 was held at The
Spectator Gallery, Hamilton, Ontario. This prestigious show ran for the month of October and received support from the Ontario
Crafts Council and the Hamilton Region Arts Council. Nineteen members supplied 52 articles for display. The 1990 Biennial
exhibition will be held at the Woodstock Art Gallery in the month of September.

Changes are evident in our Guild. A student
membership has been introduced, and a CSCL sale has been re-introduced and will take place at Black Creek Pioneer Village, May
13, & 14, 1989. For our 40th Anniversary, new prize categories will be introduced with cash awards from commercial
establishments. Watch our Canadian Leathercraft publication for advance notice of categories.

Our regards are extended to the
families of Helen Newton, Mary Whately, Gel and Lorna Brigden. Lorna was responsible for the CSCL By-Laws and Constitution as
we know them today.

We welcome new members, Associates and Fellows into our Society. Your participation continues to be very
important to the CSCL.

Thank you Toronto branch for hosting this '89 Annual. Thank you for being here today. Special thanks to
our hard working executive. My best wishes extended to everyone. Respectfully Submitted, Ruth M. Haig. President.

MINUTES OF THE 38TH ANNUAL MEETING OF CSCL

Ruth Haig, president of CSCL opened the meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday,
May 7, 1988 at the Royal Resort Hotel. Phyllis McHale, president of Norland Branch extended everyone a warm welcome and hoped
that a good time would be had
by all.

A motion to adopt the minutes of the 1987 Annual Meeting held at the Novotel Hotel in Mississauga
was made by Mae Corbett, seconded by Gladys Riddell and unanimously carried.

A motion to adopt all reports, including the
Branch reports, as printed in the Annual Report was made by Audrey Gorton, seconded by Karla Van Horne and unanimously carried.

Ruth Haig then proceeded to read her message in the Annual Report. The main thrust of this report gave all the examples that
CSCL had done for the membership, but what had the membership done for CSCL? Poor attendance at CSCL sponsored workshops was
one of the events cited that had been offered and not taken advantage of. Perhaps in the future this could be resolved.

On a
motion made by Jack Meharg, seconded by Harold Brister, and unanimously carried, it was decided that the membership fees for
Sustaining Members be increased to $35.00 annually, effective immediately.

On a motion made by Lois MacPherson, seconded by Bob
Sutton and unanimously carried that CSCL introduce a full-time student membership up to the age of 20 at one-half the current
regular fee.

On a motion made by Betsy Rennie, seconded by Viola Harris and unanimously carried it was decided to increase
membership fees by $5.00 to $15.00 for 1989 and a further increase of $5.00 to $20.00 in 1990.

Dorothy Muma, chairman of the
Council of Fellows, on presenting the Weston Trophy stated that the work was not the best of quality she had seen and some of
the marks were very low. She then presented Betsy Rennie of the Hamilton Branch with her Associate and also a Pin. Betsy
received total marks over 80% on all four entries. CONGRATULATIONS BETSY!

The history of the Weston Trophy was made by Karla
Van Horne while Gladys Riddell and Bea Austin appraised the articles submitted. Hamilton won the trophy for the third year with
76.74%.

Madeleine Mitchell then gave the Nominating Committee Report and she then introduced the Executive for the 1989-90
year. The Toronto Branch then extended an invitation to the 1989 Annual Meeting to be held at the Nottawasaga Inn, Alliston on
May 5, 6, and 7, 1989.

Leather '88 is to be held at the Hamilton Spectator Gallery during the month of September. Up to 5 articles may be
submitted for acceptance in the prestigious show held every two years. Ruth Haig reported that we have received a grant in the
amount of $985.00 from Walter Sunahara of the Ontario Arts Council for use towards our workshops and Leather '88. Muriel
McKnight of the Hamilton Guild will be chairman of Leather '88.

The Council of Fellows decided that the Jean Hunter Award be
given every second year starting in 1989. A discussion ensued re the meaning of "novice" and this was referred to the Council of
Fellows to make a decision regarding this.

The meeting was then adjourned and a question period followed. Respectfully
Submitted, Laura Walker, Recording Secretary. EDITOR'S REPORT - CANADIAN LEATHERCRAFT

We have arrived at another Annual and the
time seems to have passed so swiftly. I know in my last report I said that there would be an effort made to put out four
bulletins this year, but circumstances prohibited this. One of the reasons is that my typewriter gave out. Hopefully, I will not
have the same bad luck this year and the typewriter has been replaced with a computer.

That seems to have resolved this part of
the circumstances. The other is that no matter how many feelers or requests I put out the material for the bulletin just doesn't
seem to arrive. I have retyped good old material from previous bulletins but I don't think that we should have to depend on
this.

I often hear "where are our bulletins?", or that "our constitution states that we are entitled to four issues a year", but
input is needed to accomplish this task.

I again URGE the membership, guild and members-at-large, to send me some material.
Don't put it off hoping someone else will try and fill the bill - sit down today and let us hear of your particular techniques,
favourite articles, book reports or interesting articles from some newspaper. As you can see I would appreciate anything that
will fill the BULLETIN and then perhaps I could get out four issues a year. Respectfully Submitted, Audrey A. Gorton, Editor.

Page No. 8 MISSISSAUGA BRANCH

During the summer of 1988, Bill Whittingham our program coordinator, laid out a full season
program. But, like all well planned things and events, things can happen to set them awry. '

We started terrifically with an
Owl Mirror project, in various sizes, everyone participating, Bill led this project.

Cliff McTavish gave us a demonstration on
how to anneal, bend, and harden needles and awls for stitching projects.

For October, we planned a big workshop on Air Brush
Techniques by Robb Barr from Bismarck, ND and Various Techniques by Bob Beard from Farmington, NM at Cooksville United Church.
This demonstration was cancelled due to a problem at the border. We had apologies from them and also a promise to return at a
later date from one of them. Something we are looking forward to.

Our two junior members put on a pair of Seasonal Projects in
late November and early December, both on a x-mas theme. One was on a suede stocking with white rabbit trim to hang from the
mantle. The other gave instruction on the construction of a x-mas tree in green suede with decoration. These projects turned
out to be very well thought out for our participation as a group, everyone enjoyed them.

Before breaking off for the Christmas
season, we had a Pizza party at the Tandy store.

In January, Lea Love did a project on a little Brown Jug; baking the leather
until it was hard and sealing it with wax. A great variety was constructed by our members, both in the hard baked type and also
the softer air dried version.

In February, we started our biggest group project. One evening, a full. day (Sat.), and a final
evening two weeks later, plus a fair bit of homework. Karla Van Horne instructed us to make a Ranger Hat. Twelve of us were
measured, made patterns, punched and counted holes, selected suede and leather on the. Thursday evening at the store. On the
Sat. we cut out our Leather, formed the brim of the hat and prepared to attach the crown. At home we finished putting them
together, At the next meeting, we finished the project and made hat bands and dyed them. Voila, a dozen terrific Ranger Hats,
great participation and a lot of fun.

Another workshop for our group started the last Thursday in March and continued again at
Cooksville United Church, on April 1st, this time under the leadership of Betsy Rennie, making a Double Picture Frame. Things
were going great guns, but we didn't have time to complete the picture frames at the workshop.

So far it has been a great learning experience and a productive year for the Mississauga Group. Some great work has
been produced, all of it with fun and conversation. We lost one of our members, he had to move away from our area, but we are
picking up a couple of new members this spring, again thanks
to Bill Whittingham.

We still have a few events on our programme
to finish the years'activities. Our annual meeting held March 16th resulted in our executive remaining almost the same.
President - Don MacLeod; Treasurer - Lea Love; Secretary - Kevin Armstrong; Membership - Eve Chadwick; and Program Coordinator -
Bill Whittingham.

The format of our bi-weekly meetings will change. The second Thursday evening the meeting will be held at the
Tandy Store in Clarkson and instruction on our next project. The fourth Thurs. evening the meeting will be held at Cooksville
United Church. This will be a workshop night continuing what we had prepared at the previous meeting. A great place with lots of
space and good lighting. Respectfully Submitted, Don MacLeod, President. NORLAND BRANCH

The Norland Branch meets at the home of
Hilda Chynoweth. We meet monthly on Wednesday Evening at 7:30 p.m.

In the late summer, one of our long standing members Lillian
Cruz moved to Stouffville. Our September meeting was very informative. Glenn Nelson provided instruction in the use of the
Swivel Knife. He showed how to improve style
and techniques and also sharpening tools. We welcomed Art Cousins. (He's my Dad!)

As for the past four months, inclimate weather has kept our members at home on Meeting nights. Hilda was driven to go to
Arizona for the month of March. It's dry there.

The executive for 1989-1990 are: President - Hilda Chynoweth; Vice- President -
Russ Lynch; Secretary- Treasure - Carol Broumley. Respectfully Submitted, Carol Broumley Secretary - Treasure.

Another year has come and gone in the Toronto group. It was quite an eventful year with meetings
and demos which were well attended. We had excellent demos by branch members; Gladys Riddell on wallet interiors and purse
patterns; Rene Hackstetter with slide demonstrations and a picture frame demonstration. Our x-mas party was excellent with
lots of food and fun. In closing, I hope the next session will be as productive and eventful as the past. Respectfully
Submitted, Bruce White, Secretary. WOODSTOCK BRANCH

The Woodstock Branch opened it's season with a demonstration by Edith
Melchior-Hawkins, FCSCL using rawhide to make fish mokiles.

We made Suede Poinsettias in November under the guidance of Beula
Reynolds, ACSCL and in December attempted Mexican Braiding by Madeleine Mitchell. Nancy Durham demonstrated her carving
techniques in February. The Spring meeting had Loreen Manuel demonstrating molded leather. After the Annual we look forward to
a visit by Jack Meharg who will demonstrate Stacked Leather (May 25th).
