Rotary Punch Cover
By Peter Grove
Given out at the 2000 Annual Workshop
To save the cutting edges of your rotary punch, and make it easier to find in your work kit.
Layout the pattern on leather (2-4 oz) and trace. Cut out the two pieces, set the snap base on piece 1, and the snap top on piece 2, both on the grain sides, and cement together, "A" to "A", and "B" to "B". Cement only on the stitch line. Punch and stitch along the dotted line from "A" to "B". Moisten the leather unit and put thin plastic (saran wrap, or lunch baggy) over your rotary punch head and insert it into the pocket to mold the shape. Remove the punch when leather is dry(about 24 hours). The case should be oiled inside when fully dried, neatfoot oil or luxor. Position #1 on piece 1 is the hole for the bottom of dot snap for Pro-punch and Osborne #155; position #2 is for Maun punch. Your punch may be different, make a paper pattern first and locate the dot snap the way you like it to fit. If you have a colour preference dye the piece and finish it as you like.
[The original page includes a hand-drawn pattern diagram of the two punch-cover pieces, with handwritten labels for the grain side, fold line, and the two snap-hole positions; not reproduced here.]
Lois MacPherson
Lois, very suddenly, passed away in early June. She loved to travel in her car, to see her daughter Tina and grandchildren in Montreal. She leaves two daughters one in Mississauga, Arleigh, and her 3 children, and a son, Glen in Vancouver, and Tina and her 3 children in Montreal. She was a great participant, and demonstrator, and the Mississauga Club will miss her. Her expertise and artistic flair will be sadly missed in the C.S.C.L.

50th Annual Weekend
April 14,15,16 2000
Woodstock,Ont
It was a windy, but sunny Friday afternoon in mid-April as people started to arrive at the Quality Inn in Woodstock for the 50th Anniversary Annual Weekend of Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft.
Since its beginning in 1950,CSCL has been a unique and visible member of the the Canadian craft world, often transcending into the art world as well.
[Printed exactly so: "of the the Canadian craft world", with "the" repeated.]
Marking its half century anniversary is indeed an honour and privilege for the Woodstock Branch.Madeleine Mitchell and her team of Nancy Durham,Loreen Manuel,Beula Reynolds, and Heather Atkinson eagerly awaited the members fromMississauga,London, Toronto,Hamilton,Norland and other Ontario areas.
The Friday evening activities included registering for the weekend and setting up the various table displays-Branches, Weston Trophy,Members-at- Large,Asssociate, and the popular Draw table. To help remember our past-the Heritage Table allowed members to display favourite pieces from previous years.Northern Lights Leather completed the display area with an array of Leather craft supplies.
The Leather Quilt started at CSCL's 40th Anniversary in 1990 was on display with new Millenium Squares-the 65 squares have been worked by 56 members. Imagination, colour, texture and personality decorated the uniquely CSCL project.
A short Executive Meeting,to tie up loose ends, was held prior to the main evening activities-that of the Judging of the table articles by Fellow and Associate members, and the demonstration of Hamilton member Peter Grove on "Tricks of the Leathercraft Trade"Members came away enthusiastically recalling the many tips Peter had shared.
Over morning coffee, 34 members visited, and viewed the table displays, and assembled for the Annual Meeting-Bill Whittingham's last meeting as President of CSCL.Annual reports were read and approved, the new 2000-2001 Executive Slate of Officers was presented.
Silva Fox,our talented American member was granted Associate standing and awarded the Zalitis pin.
The highlight was the presentation of the Weston Trophy to Hamilton Branch.Ribbons and the trophy were presented to Peter Grove and the Hamilton members.

An addition to the agenda, was the induction of 6 CSCL members as recepients of the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for their long time committment to CSCL-Nora Huyck,Dorothy Muma,Sadie Roebuck,Robert Dengler,Jessie Little, and Ruth Haig.A short biography for each was read by Membership Chair,Madeleine Mitchell. Thanks to Dorothy McPherson for her tireless efforts to make sure our long standing members were recognized for their contributions to CSCL.
[Printed exactly so: "recepients" and "committment".]
The afternoon was taken up with demonstrations where CSCL members shared their expertise. The program included "Violet Pins and Others" demonstrated by Marion Kehoe, and Bill Whittingham exploring "Colouring Techniques" Idea after idea tumbled out of the mouths of our talented demonstrators.
After a series of draws.and.a break, David McPherson showed techniques of "Box Construction" while Jack Meharg showed "Belt and Holster Tips".The afternoon surely proved that leather is one of the most versatile of mediums to work with.
Upon completing the last of the draws, members relaxed and prepared for the evening festivities.
A sumptious buffet Banquet meal Saturday evening was followed by entertainment by Tiffany Fewster, a talented 15 year old step dancer who was accompanied by Shane Cook a young, champion fiddler.
[Printed exactly so: "sumptious" for "sumptuous".]
The presentation of Craftsman,Salon, and other CSCL Awards followed. The audience graciously acknowledged our many skilled, creative members. The conclusion of the evening was left to Tony Baptist,a mysterious and entertaining magician who entertained while attendees enjoyed 50th Anniversary Cake.
As ties were loosened and shoes shook off,the table displays were taken down and the 50th celebrations were winding down.
Sunday morning allowed CSCL members a final opportunity to be inspired by the "Braiding Techniques" of Gary Cook before saying good bye to friends and heading home.
The 50th Anniversary of CSCL had come to an end, members again, had experienced the good feelings, good food, and marvelled at the generosity of CSCL members in sharing their talents
Many Thanks are owing to the people of CSCL who made the 50th Anniversary a sucess-to Woodstock Branch Members who willingly and generously gave time and effort.
[Printed exactly so: "sucess" for "success".]

NEW ASSOCIATE!
At its 50th Annual Meeting the CSCL extended its congratulations to its newest Associate Member, Silva Fox.
Silva Fox is a self taught leather artist who came to leather from a professional background as a graphic artist. Because she is self taught she has developed her own unique style. She believes that "the multiple dimensional quality and texture of leather lends itself beautifully to lifelike wildlife paintings and portraits. Exquisite details and intricate, tactile designs worked into my paintings and the almost holographic appearance of the sculpted images are impossible to recreate on canvas."
Silva has shown widely for more than 20 years, and won far too many awards and competitions to list. She also teaches extensively, from international students, to children at a chuck wagon cook off. In 1997 Silva received the "Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft"
Silva lives in Mundelein, Illinois and is a member of the Mississauga branch. She has a site on the World Wide Web at "http://wdstudio.net/foxart"
