PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Welcome members, guests, and friends to the 35th anniversary of the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft. Today as we meet, deal with business, renew acquaintances and watch and listen to splendid demonstrations, let us take a few moments to reflect on the C.S.C.L.- the society that holds us together in the common bond of creating fine pieces of leather art. We are at a crossroads today in our organization, but let us remember the forward-thinking group of leathercrafters who formed the society 35 years ago. The objectives of the C.S.C.L. were scribed in the Constitution and I would like to quote just two of the objectives:
(1) To encourage creativity in design;
(2) To establish a high standard of craftsmanship by improved standards in teaching and judging.

In 1985, as in 1950, I believe those are pertinent and relevant objectives. On Sunday morning Fred Brown, Chairman of the Council of Fellows will reveal to you the results of the survey presented to the C.S.C.L. members tnrough a questionnaire circulated this past winter.

During the 1984-85 session your Executive Council met 6 times. As of September 1984, I have taken the chair for Jack Meharg.

In looking at the year in review I am reminded of two C.S.C.L. workshops. In May '84, Masks-with Rae Anderson and in Nov.'84- Desk Blotters ith Fred Brown, F.C.S.C.L. The fruits of their labour are apparent on the exhibition tables today!.

On July 5, 1984, Leather '84 opened at the Scarborough City Centre. This very successful exhibit included 60 articles areated by 21 members.

Some of you may have expected to find information pertaining to the 1985 C.N.E. sale in your registration package. At our November Executive Meeting, a motion to discontinue participation at the C.N.E. was carried. The vote found 10 for the motion and 2 against. During the discussion preceding the vote, it was decided that we seek better arts and crafts sales to market our fine leather articles. Please forward any information re quality sales that you might have to either your Branch President or Executive Council.

I would like to mention that during the 1984-85 season we have lost a few members- Emma Knowles, Evelyn Austin, John Trops Alvin Haig, Emma Rothenberg and Winnie Coombs. Our sympathies go out to their families and friends. Also, some members have been stricken with illness and we wish them future good health.

C.S.C.L. members and their work have received well-deserved publicity in recent months. A beautifully produced exhibition, "Image '84", featured works by Hamilton members and among the jurors was Woodstock's Carol McLean, F.C.S.C.L.

Lillian Kay, A.C.S.C.L., was highlighted in a Toronto Star article and she was kind enough to put in a plug for C.S.C.L.

In February 1985, the Hamilton Group was again busy, this time at "Textures" in Hamilton. A tribute to the late Irva Ford, F.C.S.C.L.,a past president of C.S.C.L., was presented with articles of her work on display, as well as an album full of pictures and memories.

Since its formation at the last Annual Meeting, the new Mississauga Branch has become a vital and active part of the C.S.C.L. Harold Brister and his group are to be commended.

We will miss both Barrie and Belleville as C.S.C.L. Branches, as of today, but will welcome all the remaining members as members-at-large.

As we move into a new year, I would like to tell you about some of the events your Executive has planned for you.

We are presently in the process of mounting a travelling exhibition co-sponsored by C.S.C.L. and the Ontario Crafts Council. Partial funding has already been received from the Ontario Arts Council. Very soon each member will receive a Call for Entry and more details. I would like every able member to participate in this exhibition. We're going to show Ontario high calibre leather articles. Joan Foster, of O.C.C. has been most helpful and supportive. What we need from you is your work.

A workshop on "Design" has been scheduled for your pleasure on May 25/85 at St. Martin-in-the-Field Anglican Church, Toronto. Carol McLean, F.C.S.C.L., will conduct this instructive workshop. All members welcome.

During this coming year I have a personal committment to C.S.C.L. to help rejuvenate the Society through increased exposure to the public, (such as our upcoming travelling show), and by enticing new members with the romance of leather.

In conclusion I would be remiss if I did not thank a few people. First of all, thanks to Fred and Mary Patterson for agreeing to continue as editors of Canadian Leathercraft. Secondly, to Fred Brown and the Council of Fellows for looking deeply into the problems facing CSCL and proposing solutions.

And lastly, Thank You to the Executive Council. Without the guidance and kindess of each of the members, I would not be here today.

Now, let's all work together for another 35 years!

Respectfully submitted,
Madeleine Mitchell,
Acting President, C.S.C.L.

COUNCIL OF FELLOWS:

On March 23, 1984, the Council of Fellows met at the home of Bob and Dorothy Muma. At
this time, judging of applications for Associate and Fellow standing took place. There was also judging
for the Weston Trophy Branch competition. The meeting was chaired by Fred Brown. Marg. Hunter successfully
completed her Associate standing, and was also awarded the Zalitis Pin for high marks. Three branches
competed for the Weston Trophy; Hamilton, Toronto and Woodstock. The Toronto Branch were fortunate in
being named the winners of the Weston Trophy competition. As well as the above judging, this meeting of
the Fellows was considered their Annual meeting, and all relevant business was dealt with at this time.
The Council met on the evening of Fri. Apr. 13, at the Ethel Finkle Auditorium, Woodstock, Ont.,
(Woodstock General Hospital), for the purpose of selecting the Craftsman and Salon Awards. The Council of
Fellows also met at the home of the Muma's on May 25, 1984, this time for selection of articles from those
submitted for display at Leather'84, The final meeting of the Fellows for the year was on Sept. 28, held
once again at Dorothy and Bob Muma's home. This was a "trouble-shooting" meeting, called for the purpose
of taking an all-over view of our Society as it stands at the moment, and hopefully suggesting means of
improving it. Out of this came the questionnaire which was mailed to all members in February of 1985.
Discussion re the answers received through this questionnaire will take place at the Annual Meeting, 1985,
on the Sunday morning following the Annual General meeting. Fred Brown consented to remain as Chairman of
the Council for the 1984-1985 session, and Jean Hunter retained the duties of Secretary. All members of
the Council wish to take this opportunity to express their great appreciation to Bob and Dorothy Muma for
their kindness in opening their home for these meetings, and parcel delivery of entries. Respectfully
submitted Fred Brown, Chairman, Council of Fellows

EDITOR'S REPORT

Once again we thank all those
members who have helped so much in making our job an enjoyable experience. We ° had, as this year's
reporters, Toronto, Woodstock, the Members-at-large, and our last issue for the year, ready for
distribution at this meeting, is a joint effort of Toronto and Hamilton. This issue, scheduled to be
prepared by Barrie unfortunately co-incided with preparations for the Annual Meeting, something this small
but dedicated Branch has planned so completely and skillfully. Due to changes in status of both Barrie and
Belleville to Members-at-large status, our new schedule is as follows for the upcoming 4 issues: Summer
1985 (Annual meeting reports) - Hamilton Branch; Fall 1985- Mississauga Branch; Winter 1985-1986- Norland
Branch; Spring 1985-Toronto. We are still attempting to include all possible information. in each envelope
we must send out. Whenever possible, hand-delivery of Branch issues is attempted. It is now possible to
omit sales tax on our type of publication printing costs, and our treasurer has applied for back credits
for tax. All these measures are taken with the hope of reducing costs wherever we can. Thanks for all the
help received.

Editor, Canadian Leathercraft.

BRANCH REPORTS****

BARRIE BRANCH:

Seven meetings of the Barrie Branch of C.S.C.L. were held during 1984/85, with average attendance of six.

At the first meeting after the Annual, Kay Cloughley demonstrated the making of a medallion pendant which she had seen demonstrated there. On Sunday June 10th, we gathered at May Corbett's to partake of our annual Picnic, which proved to be a pleasant event. On July 5, just 4 of us were able to attend the opening of Leather'84, which was held at Scarborough City Centre.

On Sept. 8th, Kay and Clara instructed us on the making of a cheque-book cover. On Oct. 27th they helped with the making of a belt.

The November 17th meeting pertained mostly to long-range plans for the 1985 Annual Meeting which is to be held in Barrie. This is to be jointly hosted by the Barrie Branch and the Executive.

On Saturday Jan. 5, 1985, we were joined by the Norland group, when Kay and Clara demonstrated the making of a purse. This was continued when we met on Jan. 26th.

By this time of the year, we realized that we must look for a new executive as our president, Kay Cloughley, had agreed to serve for just one more year, which was her third term in succession. A special meeting was called for Thursday Feb. 7th, to determine if Barrie could continue as a Branch. Unfortinately we were unable to obtain an executive, so were eventually forced to cease to be a Branch of C.S.C.L. and will become Members at Large.

Respectfully Submitted Joy Findlay,
Secretary, Barrie Branch.

Pres: Kay Cloughley
Treas.: May Corbett.

BELLEVILLE BRANCH:

Belleville Branch submitted their resignation as a Branch of C.S.C.L. early in 1985, and the Executive Council accepted their resignation with regrets. Members will remain as Members at Large.

In Sept., Dave McPherson demonstrated his method of making stamping tools. Our Oct.
meeting presented Sharon Gogischwili giving a workshop on ink-dyeing of end-papers, to he used in
book-binding. The same method was shown to work well on calf skiver. December's Pot Luck supper and silent
auction was followed by a presentation of slides of the Hebrides, by Betty LeWarne, President of the
Hamilton Artisans Guild. January meeting was devoted to a mini-workshop by Hope Drysdale, on Sponge Dyeing.
In Feb., Muriel McKnight showed how to create crinkle leather for jewellery. March was our election of
officers, with the same slate carrying on for the next year. President Karla Van Horne also demonstrated
round braiding at this meeting. In April Bea Austin showed how to create folding change purses, and our May
meeting will finish our season with both a Potluck supper and a showing of slides of the Queen Charlotte
Islands by June Sommerville, part of a trip accompanying noted nature artist, Robert Bateman. Many members
attended 3 workshops. Two of these were by Fred Brown, who demonstrated bookcovers and desk pads and the
third was by Karla Van Horne on Figure Carving. Some of the Guild participated in Leather'84, CNE, and
Image'84.

-15- MISSISSAUGA BRANCH:

Our Branch has completed it's first year as an affiliated branch of the C.S.C.L.,
and we are happy to report that the membership is maintaining a level of approximately 25, with an average
attendance at meetings of 18. Meetings are held twice a month, on Thursday evenings at the Tandy Leather
Store, Mississauga, with a new address, (as of the first of May, 1985,) at: 1900 Lakeshore Blvd. West.,
Mississauga. All meetings are in the form of mini-workshops, with projects, on the whole, being completed
in one session. Some items made this year include keycases, flower pins, and bookcovers, with larger
projects being developed for the future as the members gain more skills in the craft. Some of the
demonstrators that have worked with the group this past season include Karla Van Horne, Betsy Rennie, and
Jean Hunter, (some attending several sessions), and we are looking forward to having Fred Brown with us in
June. Meetings are held year-round, with only a slight drop in attendance during the holiday months. Each
meeting features a draw, and often a fun-auction, and much socializing following the workshop, with
excellent home-made refreshments. These draws and auctions, along with a large "stitching-horse" draw has
left us with a substantial bank balance to work with in the future. A group of members plan to attend the
Annual Meeting in Barrie this year, to become more acquainted with others in C.S.C.L. Next September we
are looking forward to a project of "Glovemaking", which will prove challenging to all.

Branch President:
Harold Brister

Joyce Scruton,
Secretary,

TORONTO BRANCH:

Our membership remained stable recently, except for an influx of members who later
formed the Mississauga Branch. This is an active group, who will report on their own activities. This year
we inaugurated a Question Box which is used every second meeting night to get answers to perplexing
questions from those who are Fellows and Associates. This idea has generated many various discussions.
Business, then is conducted every second meeting. October started our year with a panel on "Problems in
Projects", and the Question Box. In November, Gladys Riddell gave a well-received talk on how to design
your own projects. Our usual "Christmas Social" made for a good turn-out in December. In January, Fred
Brown showed a selection of slides of our leather creations and projects, a "Visual Night". John Marsden
showed us the use and care of carving tools and the carving of a Pine Cone design in February. Our Election
Night and Weston Trophy submissions night had each member judging the pieces submitted, using the C.S.C.L.
standards sheet with a discussion of how the Fellows mark the pieces. Still to follow this year is a "Hands
On" Night in April; Saddle stitching in May, with Bob Sutton, and a "Soft Bag" demonstration in June by
Marg. Hunter, followed by a short business meeting and the Question Box.

Whately President, Toronto Branch.

NORLAND BRANCH:

We had seven meetings in the year- also three workshops. Six of us attended a workshop in Barrie in January 1985, making a pattern and a purse.

We had a workshop in June '84 with Jean Hunter making belts. All members present made belts, and with all of Jean's helpful hints and advice we can now make a belt on our own. At this workshop we had a potluck dinner and ended our meetings until the fall.

In April, Peggy Weaver demonstrated making a strop, and each member made one. In October and November Peggy demonstrated making mitts, and we each made our own pattern and a pair of mitts.

We missed our Jan. meeting as the weather was bad. Since then we have been working on our purse from the Barrie Workshop.

A new member has been gained who seems very interested in leathercraft.

-18- WOODSTOCK BRANCH:

During the 1984-85 season Woodstock enjoyed the talents of some of our local
members, In the fall, Syd Taylor demonstrated braiding techniques and guided members through the
construction of a Turk's Head Knot, The November meeting featured Edith Melchior, FCSCL, who showed us
tool sharpening techniques and brought some tools and books to sell from another leathercrafter in the
Tillsonburg area, Executive business was also discussed, Our Christmas party at Folden's Corner was a
warm, friendly evening that started with an excellent turkey dinner, {special thanks to Loreen Manuel),
and was topped off by a slide presentation of Saudi Arabia, Carl Creamer spent over a year in the Middle
East and recounted stories of the culture, geography, and economy that he found there. Our January meeting
was cancelled due to inclement weather. Carol McLean, FCSCL, presented a detailed instruction of belt
techniques, noting measuring for size, design, fastenings and finishing at our February meeting. A
discussion also took place re Woodstock Branch. Our numbers are dwindling. We are finding, like other
branches, that it is difficult to attract new members.
