Report of the 40th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for Creative Leathercraft
During the early evening of Friday, April 27, 1990. C.S.C.L. members arrived at the Elmhurst Inn, Ingersoll, to be greeted by their hosts, the members of Woodstock C.S.C.L.
The weather had cooperated and sunshine streamed through the Victorian style building where the Annual Meeting would be held. Friday evenings are usually assigned to setting up display tables and meeting with friends not seen since last year's Annual. This year was no exception although being the 40Th Anniversary gave all in attendance more reason to reminisce about their years in the CSCL. Ruth Haig, F.C.S.C.L, president for the last three years, held her last
Executive Council meeting, with most
Executive Council members present. Last minute nominations allowed the Slate of Officers for 1990-90 to be completely filled. Ruth adeptly completed her presidential duties at this short meeting.
Later, Fellow members attended to the matter of judging the display tables in the Grand Ballroom. Their selections of Craftsman and Salon pieces would not be revealed until Saturday night.
Meanwhile, a workshop atmosphere, was set up in the Executive suite with other members busily assembling the commemorative Leather Quilt made up of 6"x6" squares of leather - each designed and signed by a C.S.C.L. member. Over 30 squares were attached and the originality and creativity of the members shone through. Since some members had not completed their squares - tools, leather, and table space was available for instant projects. Video tapes of leatherwork simultaneously played on a video recorder and participants could feel the party atmosphere building as cameras flashed and friends chatted. René Hackstetter, Toronto, passed around his "C.S.C.L. Newsletter" highlighting 40 years.
Early Saturday, April 28, the Registration desk with Loreen Manual, Nancy Durham, and Beula Reynolds opened again for business. 60 registrations were realized with a sprinkling of guests. Coffee was served before the business meeting commenced at 10 a.m.
During Ruth Haig's Presidential remarks, she reported business, events, and challenges that face C.S.CL. Additionally, she read the minutes of the very first organizational meeting held in Toronto on June 8th, 1950 which created C.S.C.L. One of the founding fathers, Mr. Ray Potter, was honoured today with an Honourary Life Membership. Mr. Robert Muma, F.C.S.C.L. was also at that meeting in 1950 and remains today an advisor, mentor, judge, and friend of the C.S.C.L.
Other business included discussion of the Larmour Library, collating and re-printing of the By-Laws, listing of all Archival material, and the Annual meeting reports. The Leather '90 exhibition in September in Woodstock and other important workshop dates were then announced.
Dorothy Muma, F.C.S.C.L., chairman of the Council of Fellows awarded the designation of Fellows to Betsy Rennie, of the Hamilton Branch and Associate memberships to René Hackstetter, Toronto, and to Cliff McTavish, Mississauga. Cliff also received the Zalitz pin for outstanding accomplishments in his Associate pieces.
Before leaving the podium, Dorothy Muma and Madeleine Mitchell presented Ruth Haig with her past president's pin and a gift of a crystal vase.
Don MacLeod, President of Mississauga was surprised and delighted as he opened an envelope to reveal that his own branch, on their first year's entry, had won the Weston Trophy for 1990, edging out Hamilton, Toronto, and Woodstock. Ribbons were presented to President Don MacLeod, Bill Whittingham, Cliff McTavish, Lois MacPherson, and Kevin Armstrong.
"cameras 'lashed" is set out here as "cameras flashed".
Page 3
Dorthy Mumu, F.C.S.C.L., a kind and dear advisor and Chairman of the Council of Fellows, assisted by Lillian Kay, A.C.S.C.L., gave critiques on the Weston Trophy entries from all branches.
As Chairman of Nominations, Madeleine Mitchell, Woodstock then reported the 1990-91 Slate of Officers for C.S.C.L. A complete list is included in this edition of the "Canadian Leathercraft".
Hamilton Branch president, Muriel McKnight proposed and invitation to C.S.C.L. to meet for the 1991 Annual Meeting, Hosted by Hamilton at the Beacon Motor Hotel in the first weekend of May.
A lively discussion followed opening of the question Box and completed the Annual Business meeting.
Verne Harvey, a local professional photographer, then coordinated and cajoled all C.S.C.L. members in attendance to smile their brightest as he snapped a 40th Anniversary portrait.
Following lunch, Annual events continued with demonstrations. Edith Melchior-Hawkins, F.C.S.C.L.
demonstrated "Fun with Leather Scraps" while Bruce White intrigued his audience with "Rope Edge Belts". Later, Jack Meharg demonstrated "Holster" construction and Margaret Monteith worked through "Leather Maché" techniques. Draw prizes were awarded through the afternoon with a special afternoon break celebrating C.S.C.L.'s 40th Anniversary with cake and beverages. Leather and tool sales for members finished the afternoon.
The evening brought the Annual Banquet and a number of enjoyable memories. The Elmhurst Inn provided a wonderful buffet dinner followed by entertainment of a Woodstock Scottish Dance Group taught by Ivan Groves. C.S.C.L. members and guests will talk for years about the ebullient presentation of Reverend Roger NicCombe of Ingersoll. He's an Anglican priest, a Latin teacher, and a policeman and believes in the 4 H's - human, humour, hugs and happiness. Ruth Haig then introduced Dorothy Muma to present ribbons for 39 Craftsman and 11 Salon awards and a special award of $50.00 to Betsy Rennie for the Best of Show.
Displays were taken down and members gathered leisurely to reminisce and enjoy the remaining time together before returning home.
A bright, sunny Sunday morning presented itself as attenders had brunch and said their goodbyes. A small group visited a local Maple Syrup producer and then trekked through a springtime woods looking for the delicate white trilliums that would enhance their memories of their weekend at the 40th Annual of C.S.C.L.
In conclusion, I would like to declare the 40th Anniversary of C.S.C.L. a great success! My heartfelt gratitude is extended to my hard-working committee - Beula Reynolds, Loreen Manuel, Nancy Durham, and Edith Melchior-Hawkins. Also, many thanks to our demonstrators, photographer, and entertainment guests. Kind regards to Ruth Haig and Executive Council members for their support and encouragement through the months of planning And to the C.S.C.L. members who attended- thanks and see you next year.
Respectfully Submitted,
Madeleine Mitchell,
President, Woodstock Branch C.S.C.L.

FORMATION OF THE CANADIAN SOCIETY OF CREATIVE LEATHERCRAFT
A meeting was held on Thursday, June 8th, 1950, in the Central Y.M.C.A., Toronto, by a number of persons actively interested in leathercraft.
A need had been felt for some time for a guild or society, province - or nation-wide, to further the aims and interests of leathercraft in general, which would have representation from many groups of leathercraftsmen.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the formation of such a society. Mr. Robert Muma, Toronto, presided at the meeting.
There were seventeen persons present:
Mr. Robert Muma, Toronto
Mr. Deane H. Russell, Ottawa
Mr. Ray Potter, Lewiscraft Supplies, Toronto Miss E. Hamill, Lewiscraft Supplies, Toronto Miss Judy Drope, Lewiscraft Supplies, Toronto Mrs. Margaret McFarlane, President, Weston Leathercraft Guild Mrs. Edith Roscoe, Past-President, Weston Leathercraft Guild Miss Clarice Packham, Clarke and Clarke Leathers, Weston Mrs. Reta Larmour, Toronto
Dr. R. K. Larmour, Toronto
Mr. R. K. Wallace, Bob Wallace Hobbycraft Supplies and School, Toronto Mr. Don McKinnon,Toronto Mrs. Don McKinnon, Toronto Mr. Harold Booth, Hamilton
Mr. Stan McQuarrie, Lewiscraft Supplies, Toronto
Mrs. J. Carter, Toronto
Miss Edith Howison, representing Mr. and Mrs. J. McDougall, Toronto
Mr. Deane H. Russell of Ottawa opened the meeting with a discussion on the subject of contemporary design. He felt that the overall design of an article in leather should be of paramount importance and that Canadians should start fresh in their own field of design, rather than merely copying the already established American leatherwork. They should strive to do more creating and less copying.
Mr. Russell felt that an organized leathercraft society, with definite aims and objectives, particularly in the field of original design, could do much to further Canadian Leathercraft.
The aims and objectives of a Canadian Society of Decorative Leathercraft were then discussed by the meeting.
It was moved by Mrs. Margaret McFarlane, seconded by Mrs. Edith Roscoe, that an association or society be formed to further leathercraft interests, such a society to be know as: "THE CANADIAN SOCIETY OF CREATIVE LEATHERCRAFT". Motion carried.
EXECUTIVE
The choosing of an executive was then discussed, and suggestions were requested for officers. It was then moved by Mrs. Roscoe, seconded by Miss Packham, that Mr. Deane Russell be appointed President of this Society. This motion was put to the vote and carried.
It was moved by Mr. Russell, seconded by Dr. Larmour, that Mr. Robert Muma be appointed Secretary-Treasurer. Carried.
It was suggested that Mr. Muma be assisted in the secretarial work by Mrs. Larmour, who assented. It was moved by Miss E. Hamill, seconded by Mr. Don McKinnon, that Mrs. Margaret McFarlane be appointed Vice-President. Carried.
Page 9
MEMBERSHIP
The meeting decided that the membership should consist of:
(1) Active members - leathercraftsmen
(2) Associate members - non-craftsmen interested in furthering the interests of the Society. It was suggested that each new member would submit his work to a Board of Selection, which would vote on whether such work was of a sufficiently high quality for the craftsman to be admitted to the Active Membership of the Society. This suggestion was put to the motion and carried.
ADVISORY COUNCIL
The question of an Advisory or Executive Council was discussed, and it was decided that the Executive Council should be made up of three members from various points in the Province. (1) One member from Ottawa - to be elected on Mr. Russell's return from members of the Ottawa Valley Leathercraft Guild.
(2) One member from Hamilton - Mr. Booth appointed
(3) One member from Toronto - Mrs. Larmour appointed,
It was also suggested that there be a fourth member, from Montreal. Mr. Louis Zimmerman was suggested.
It was decided a board should be set up to take care of the admission of new members to the Society.
CONSTITUTION
The chief points of a constitution for the new Society were discussed, and such topics as membership qualifications and membership fees were considered. It was decided that a tentative constitution be drafted by the chief executive officers, under Mr. Deane Russell's direction, such constitution to be sent out for the approval and criticism of the charter members, to b: later adopted.
TREASURY
It was suggested that an initial Treasury Fund would be necessary to carry on with current expenses, such as mailing, stationery, etc. It was moved by Mrs. Roscoe, seconded by Mr. Bob Wallace that all present assess themselves an initial fee of $1.00 each, to form such a fund. Motion voted and carried. A collection was taken of $20.00.
LEATHERCRAFT ON DISPLAY
There was a collection of leathercraft on display, contributed by the various active members present. A handsome piece of luggage of new design was shown by Mr. Russell, assorted purses, wallets, etc. by other members. Outstanding from the point of originality and distinctive workmanship were several large wall plaques of quaint French Canadian motifs, the work of Mr. Don McKinnon.
The meeting was voted a distinct success, and adjourned at 10:30 p.m.
These minutes respectfully submitted,
Reta Larmour
Secretary.
"Mr. 800th appointed" corrected to "Mr. Booth appointed" — the Hamilton founder named on p8 as Harold Booth.
