Fellows and Associates
← The Society · 140 members certified: 125 made Associate, 48 made Fellow (39 of them both), and 6 were honorary elections only
The Society certified its members in two ranks. An Associate submitted four articles — finished pieces of leatherwork — to the Council of Fellows and was elected on their marks; a Fellow was elected after further work judged by the same council, by criteria the Society set out again in 2021. Both are listed here, with the year each was granted, drawn from the Society's own newsletters and from its typed roll of about 1985. A member wrote A.C.S.C.L. after a name for Associate and F.C.S.C.L. for Fellow; the papers print both, with points and without.

The final count, 1951–2026
140 members hold a certification in the Society's surviving records: 48 Fellows, 125 Associates and 14 honorary elections. 39 members appear in both lists, having gone on from Associate to Fellow.
All certified members (140)
A dash means the year is not recorded. On the c. 1985 roll a blank column means the roll gives no year there, not that the member never held the rank; where a newsletter supplies the year, it is used here.
The document behind this page
The Society's own typed list of Associates and Fellows, compiled about 1985 and set out in full below, is the historical proof for the early half of this page. It was typed as a single roll and then kept by hand — later members added in pencil or ink, and rows struck through with a date of death as members died. Four of the certification elections on this page rest on the roll alone, all of them Associate years. This page carries the roll forward past where it stops, using the newsletters for the years the roll does not give.
Where a name is spelled differently on the roll and in the newsletters, this page uses the spelling the newsletters print and the roll keeps its own. Janis Zalitis, elected Associate in 1959 and Fellow in 1962, is typed “Zaletis” on the roll. One name is held the other way about: the newsletter that elected her in spring 1953 prints “VILLMANN, Iiva”, while the Society's own retelling of 1975 and the c. 1985 roll both print “Villman, Irva”. Both forms are the Society's own and nothing in the archive decides between them, so the register keeps Irva Villman and the 1953 spelling is recorded here. Whether she is also the Iiva Limberg-Villmann of the 1952–53 newsletter is unsettled, and this archive does not join them.
The Society's own roll, c. 1985
Compiled c. 1985. The whole of the Society's typed roll follows, as it was published on its own page until this one absorbed it.
As typed about 1985, the roll names 112 members: all 112 Associates, and 24 Fellows among them.
This is the Society's own record of who had been elected Associate and who Fellow, and in which year. It was typed as a single roll and then kept by hand: later members were added in pencil or ink, and as members died their rows were struck through and a date of death written alongside.
This roll stops at about 1985. For every member the Society certified, with the years carried forward from the newsletters as well, see Fellows and Associates.
It is the document that dates the Society's early certifications. The roll gives Irva Ford's Fellowship as 1958, Fred Brown's as 1963 and Clarice Packham's as 1955, and supplies both years for scores of members the record held only as names.
Four certification elections rest on this page alone, all of them Associate years: Bertha Cadigan's of 1954, Mary Boyd's and Eleanor Coutts's of 1966 and Gel Brigden's of 1974. The newsletters carry the rest, Hilda Darbyshire's Fellowship of 1968 among them, and each of those rows now names the newsletter that announced it. Almost everyone the roll names is also named in the newsletters: of its hundred and twelve names, only two, Bertha Cadigan and Mary Boyd, appear nowhere else in the Society's surviving records.
The roll
Transcribed from the three pages above. A blank means the roll gives no year in that column, not that the member never held the grade. Names are given as this roll prints them, reordered to given-name-first from its own surname-first listing. Fourteen of them differ from the form used elsewhere in this archive, where a contemporary source outweighs this undated roll: Cavanaugh for Cavanagh, Tory for Torry, Surgener for Surgenor, Yesunaka for Yasunaka, McKinnon for MacKinnon, Zaletis for Zalitis, Beach for Beech, Winnifred for Winifred Barratt, Lilliam for Lillian Neelands, Marg for Margaret Weldon, Gertrode for Gertrude Hilder's given name, Bob for the Robert Shaw the newsletters print, “Howard Sr. Brock” for the Howard Brock Sr. of the 1975 minutes, and Vi Caldwell for the Mary Caldwell a contemporary election notice gives. This page keeps the roll’s own spelling in every case rather than silently correcting it.
Associate, Fellow and the Council of Fellows are explained in Words the Society used. Compiled from the Society's own records: the newsletters of 1951–2026 and the typed roll of about 1985. It is as complete as those records are. A member certified in a year no surviving newsletter covers, and not written onto the roll, cannot appear here.
